THE IMPROMPTU COMPETITION

This Competition is designed to test the spontaneity and creativity of SMC Forum members. It is open to all registered Forum users, and there is no entry fee required. This is to encourage as many people to compete as possible.

REGISTRATION
There is no entry fee. All competitors are required to sign up by 17 January 1200hrs by sending me a PM. Your participation in the competition is confirmed when I reply to your PM. DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS, THE COMPETITION IS OPEN TO THE FIRST 15 FORUM MEMBERS TO REGISTER.

COMPETITION
There are two parts to this competition. To participate, you MUST complete both parts.

PART ONE: YOUR BEST EFFECT
Competitors are required to perform any ONE effect from any genre of magic. The effect can be prepared or impromptu, a card trick or a mentalism effect - anything goes. As long as the effect is under 5 minutes, you can perform it. Originality is not an issue, though performing an original effect gets you bonus marks.

Judging Criteria:
Showmanship 20 points
Technique 15 points
Originality 05 points

PART TWO: IMPROMPTU ACT
Each Competitor will receive one random 'Prop' card. On each card is written the name of a prop with which you will do magic with. Each Competitor is given 1 minute to think of an effect, then perform that effect with the chosen Prop. Examples of Props include a deck of cards, some coins, or a piece of rope. You are limited only by your
creativity. And a time limit of 5 minutes.

Judging Criteria:
Showmanship 10 points
Technique 10 points
Creativity 10 points

There are a total of 10 - 15 Prop cards. Each Competitor will pick a random card from this set. If a Competitor feels that he/she cannot perform anything with the card that he/she obtained, then he/she may draw another Prop card. Every Prop card drawn in this manner forces the Competitor to forfeit 3 points.

Every Competitor draws from the same pool of Prop cards. The last Competitor has equal chances of drawing a particular Prop card compared to the first.

This is undoubtedly the harder part of the Competition. You don't have to memorise a thousand impromptu effects- just be creative and think out of the box. When have you last been challenged in this way?

PRIZES
Yeah, there are prizes to be won. They might not be much to you, but there's no entry fee either. Prizes are sponsored by some SMC members. Go wild.

What is an impromptu pack?
An impromptu pack is a collection of ordinary props. What exactly are these props?
Well, you gotta win one to know.

So that's it for now. If you're wondering why you must pay $2, you should know that it all goes to the rental of the place. It is a cafe, after all.

Any other questions?

Aloy's Note:
I just want to clarify that the $2 is being collected by the cafe for the usage of the place and has nothing to do with SMC. We are not renting the place from the cafe to collect the "cover charge".
So all terms and condition is between the cafe and attendees.

Hi all,

I just want to clarify that the $2 is being collected by the cafe for the usage of the place and has nothing to do with SMC. We are not renting the place from the cafe to collect the "cover charge".
The receipt for the $2 will be issued by the cafe.

Formalities aside, this is one interesting competition. Looking forward to the acts people come up with.

Cheers

Some Questions that have been sent to my Inbox:

1. Can I come even if I don't compete?

Yes.

2. Can you bring laymen to the Meeting?

Yes, as long as they pay $2.

lukold - January 9, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
Hmm , directions to mondo cafe?

LarryDK - January 9, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
To add in the details, I suggest that those that are interested to join this competition, Please send a rough descriptions of your effect that you are doing.

Cause we dun wan people to perform 2 same effects, it will be hard for the second performer doing the same effect and judging wise will be greatly affected.

:)

Yet another question:

When do I pay the $2 admission fee?

You pay to the cafe staff upon arrival at the cafe. A receipt will be issued to you.

Ok guys and gals. See Bali Lane? That's where you're supposed to go. The cafe is right behind a bus-stop. You can't miss it.
