Title: Is The Magic Hype Cooling Off?
Description: in Singapore?
Aloy - February 14, 2006 09:11 PM (GMT)
I think almost all can agree that shortly after the debut of David Blaine and his brand of close up magic, there was a world-wide spike in interest in magic, including Singapore.
But I noticed that there seems to be a cooling off over the past few months. Initially I thought it was just me because I have been too busy to really spend time on this hobby and the people in it, but chatting with a couple of magic shops, it does seem that quite a lot of magic hobbists are moving on. There are still new people getting interested of course, but the growth rate is slower than the drop off rate.
Actually, if this is true, i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing....just an interesting erm....phenomenon.
Anyone felt the same? Of is it just me and I've been talking to the wrong people?
sand king - February 14, 2006 10:38 PM (GMT)
i agree....like yeh, only the people doing magic for a living are the strongest ones.
HarapanOng - February 15, 2006 03:47 AM (GMT)
I hope so.
Those that are truly into magic would not have quitted. Even by looking at the forum members, you can tell who's in and who's just a flash interest.
farbird - February 15, 2006 06:45 AM (GMT)
its better that the hype cool off soon..
This is so the effects will only be done by serious hobbyist and not some casual learner whom perform the same trick all too many time and thus leaking it..
Casual learners hardly learn the real art , which in my own opinion, misdirection..

Hype cooling off?
GOOD!
Less of those "know-it-alls" and "Going-around-exposing-magic-for-fun" people around!!
Magic should never by a hype or an "in" thing, IMHO. As if this is so, that will be the moment the art will start dying off.
--Shoot me if I'm wrong--
Lefty - February 15, 2006 04:46 PM (GMT)
well, i mean this "effect" also happen in many hobbies, like american pool, snooker and maybe basketball?
Well, i use to be crazy over pool, i mean everyday gonna practice my cue-ing and at least 4 times a week you could find my in a pool salon, but now, rarely even twice a week.
Just like magic, i am super crazy over it now, hope this will last forever, i would say that maybe Magic will have a longer life spam. How many sport or hobbies can you get to see people go crazy over it and thinks that you are satanic? :g:

The art, will never die.
Little tricks and magicians will.
Daraketh - February 15, 2006 05:49 PM (GMT)
exactly what alex said man...
the art wont die, coz if u go up to any random person n do a trick, they will still go wow..
only those ppl with short interest spans will die out.. which is good.. less magicians means more unique we are.. better that the casual ones quit cause then there'll be less ppl performing and screwing up the tricks..
just the serious ones will be enough to keep the art around.

Ya, Thats true though, but sometime its hard to go on. When you have other committment in life, but its always the passion that keeps you going.

When was the last time you visit KFC, look at the kids meal. :P
Magic never die, it was to busy at many other, i guess....... B)
vennomz - February 16, 2006 09:08 AM (GMT)
its better that the hype is dying off.u wouldnt want to perform with 3 out of 10 audience knowing what you are roughly doing.i feel magic is for those who have great passion for it.requires time and effort to practise,to improvise and improve....most casual learners that i know just want to do tricks to impress chicks(no pun intended) or they just want to know how its done so that they could go around exposing magicians and wouldnt feel like idiots getting fooled
zomaziz - February 16, 2006 12:46 PM (GMT)
but umm.. no1's actually sure whether the hype IS dying off.
i still see a lot of new magicians of late.. business is improving at the magic shops that i visit..
(its getting harder to just reach the counter and say: [cough cough]"one red bicycle please.." [hey don't push!] )
=.= fine, so i exagerated a little. but business is definitely improving. but no, i don't mean that the hype is getting better, either.
just like you guys, i hope it dies off for the most of them..
Daraketh - February 16, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
haha the day we have to queue in line just to buy bikes is the day we will really wish that the hype would die of lol...
yeah too many magicians isnt really a good thing anyway.. like vennomz said, you dont want to perform to audience that know what you're prolly gonna do cause they saw some kid performing it yesterday..

I tried very hard in my teens to get more involved in magic. As a poor teenager, I still bought a few books, went to a magic class, bought some gimmicks (some of which were quite a disappointment :D ).I performed a little to my family members and friends, and I am not too bad as a novice.
However, I soon found that I could not sustain my interest financially, and none of my peers or friends seemed interested in learning the trade (They were only interested in exposing the trick). I realised that I have to move on to other more important phases in life (I have no time, no money!!!)
Recently, I had a chance to visit a magic shop in the States.... and I got that magical feeling again! :)
It is sometimes difficult to sustain the passion alone huh? :)

Honestly I thought the magic hype is increasing?
Hmm, interesting topic Aloy. I shall snoop around.
vennomz - February 16, 2006 02:24 PM (GMT)
i see more of flourishers since the media reports of huron who is part of the virts.those purely interested in magic SEEM to be outnumbered by those passionate for flourish.who thinks criss angels tv series mindfreak aired on channel 5 stirred up another wave of interest for magic ?
Kazekage - February 16, 2006 02:32 PM (GMT)
There sure were a lot of them picking up magic after watching Blaine a few years back and like most of you said, one by one, they moved on... Which is cool :P
But hey! Now that Criss's show is on TV, dont you think more magicians will 'pop up' soon?
Hm... I wonder... <_<
hihs - February 16, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
hard to say.
criss angel is doing those "freaky" stuffs.
hardly any cards or coins and some basic.
perhaps ppl could just sit back and get entertained.
sand king - February 17, 2006 07:52 AM (GMT)
yeh the media is like advertising magic...
Kazekage - February 17, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
Hm...
The "freakier" the show is, the more tempted they will be to learn magic! lols

But some of the tricks seem so impossible.
This is unlike Blaine, who uses mostly "everyday" items like cards and coins.
Ben - February 17, 2006 05:48 PM (GMT)
I never really seen the hype in the first place. I started learning magic way before Blaine was shown on tv. Most people are probably aware of magic as an art but not many went on to learn it.
It's inevitable to take hiatuses in our magic journey due to work and commitments. Ultimately those who continued from their breaks are serious about it. Sad to say I will be taking a long break from it due to NS -_-
BlUeCoWz - February 17, 2006 06:27 PM (GMT)
Haha good, Less Trickster, more magicians.
Passion is when you continue no matters what.
This is what sieves the Grit from the gold.
Magic will never cease to amaze.
It is after amazement that one shows his true colours.
Magic education is available EVERYWHERE. Library, SHops, on e net.. EVERYWHERE.
just wheteher they want to take the initiative ornot.
