groovesoul - February 17, 2006 04:16 AM (GMT)
Hi All,

I recently bought Torn by Daniel Garcia and would like to discuss a single detail with anyone of you who have bought it. Please PM me.

Thanks!

borrow this thread to ask a few question,

is TORN impromptu?

is the sleight of hand easy to execute?

thanks

LarryDK - March 1, 2006 03:34 AM (GMT)
Nope its not..

Ah, angle sensitive sleight of hand..

groovesoul - March 1, 2006 04:06 AM (GMT)
I would say... angle sensitive. but not that bad.... looks really convincing if you do it well.

impromptu... depends. simple prep.

LarryDK - March 1, 2006 08:05 AM (GMT)
Hmm, i actually came up with a method that require onli a prop, very small 1.

and when the card selected sign, you can load the prop liao, and its similar convicing, juz that its easier to juz bring the prop along. :)

I've compared handlings of this one piece at a time effect from many sources. Personally I've stuck with a handling of Hollingworth's I've put together.

It's very very easy. You do have angles though, so if you buy it watch out for that. And its almost impromptu and the card can be signed on front and back. Very creative, though not without its flaws.

Torn is very angle sensitive , a spectator from behind the performer is going to be a dead give away.Torn is a very ingenious method but your handling must be very good.i give it a 8/10. :off:

Which T&R effect, viewed from the back, WONT be a give away?

Maybe you can try Reparation from Penguin Magic or The one from Expert Magic. I'm not very sure what the name is I think is Ripped or something but Reparation looks nice. B). If your card handling is good , maybe you can try Torn. Easiest preparation for T & R effects.

Mod's note: Leave a space after every punctuation. 10% warning.

You mean that if you perform "Reparation" or "Ripped or something", you can be TOTALLY surrounded, such that it wont be a "dead giveaway" even if a spectator stands behind you? :P

Bryanne, please read your own posts again. You don't even know the name of the effect and you want to recommend it to others?

just a comparision, i'm just about to purchase Torn but i came across on UnRipped by expertmagic.com

what are the difference between the two? and erm..which is better or more angle-proof?

UnRipped by ExpertMagic.com

Joe112 - April 2, 2006 11:16 AM (GMT)
Frankly, Unripped looks a lot better. Torn has 2 flaws- angle-sensitive and that the card cannot be handed out halfway through the restoration. I don't think it was worth the hype, and I was pretty disappointed with Torn on the whole, though it does offer some ingenious ideas.

rockie11 - April 2, 2006 12:36 PM (GMT)
Anyway regarding the "Unripped", do you think it is a good buy as in worth the money spent?

LarryDK - April 2, 2006 03:00 PM (GMT)
Old effect, but its far less superior than torn, consider its cleaness and handling, torn is easier to run around with.

But it still depends on individual. In my point of view, unripped is a rip off. :P

Unripped from Expert Magic looks awesome in the demo, but it does have some angle problems and the preparation required to do it is - in my humble opinion - ridiculous. If you're only planning to do ONE effect in your entire act, this *might* be a great choice.

I would offer that almost none of the T&R card effects that look incredibly awesome are truly angle proof. As far as I know, the more angle proof the effect is, the simpler it is; most, if not all, piece by piece restoration effects are angle sensitive to some degree or other. If you want an almost 99% angle proof one, check out Jay Sankey's paper clipped where he used it to restore a torn card to its original state - it's quick, it's almost miraculous and simple; it's also versatile enough to be applied to more than a variety of effects - more than your money's worth.

Seriously - the first thing I'd ask myself before even including a T&R card effect in my repertoire is WHY I would need it? Unless there's a logical lead into the effect in your routine (many 'magicians' don't bother with routining anyway) that makes good sense it's hard to imagine why any magician would want to do it.

Just because you like it isn't reason enough to include it in your act - it's got to make sense and integrate seamlessly into your own style of magic. If you're sure, then look for a good one that's appropriate to the presentation you want to make. Good luck in your hunt... :)

You could integrate Torn into a signed card routine (e.g. ACR, Card to Pocket), with the signes card being torn up and restored.

Can anyone list down all the Torn and Restore DVDs out there? Then who ever has them can give their opinion on those different materials. I myself have Torn Daniel, because its my only T&R material, I cant really compare if its great or not. Juz find it difficult to apply it as it is very angle sensitive. Probably I haven master it well enough. When doing the effect, I prefer to keep a distance and hopefully in a darker place to keep it better covered.
Daniel has another sort of T&R effect, where the corner of the torn of card is restored just by waving his hand over it. Looks impressive, is it in his Daniel Garcia Project 1-3 vol?
