Title: Tricks You Hate
Description: Top 10?
Aloy - February 24, 2006 02:23 PM (GMT)
Everyone's always talking about their fav tricks, how abt we talk about what are the tricks we DON'T like? And say why while you're are it.
E.g.
Here's my top 2:
1) 2 Card Monte (Be honest with me)
I'm personally quite sick of the 2 card monte Blaine style (or Be Honest with Me) effect. The trick itself is pretty ok by itself, but it's quite boring to see a lot of people KEEP doing that one. And to make it worse, almost everyone who does it nowadays uses almost the EXACT same platter  And its common name (2 card monte) is also incorrectly named. THis one isn't a monte.
I have to agree that it's a good exercise/foundation building effect to learn to misdirect and start magic in. But really too over done.
2) Snap Change
Enough said. Good heavens! Dude!
And even worse if it is performed as an effect by itself (as opposed to as a way of revealing a card in an effect). :g:
It's even even worse if done by the same person who just showed me the "2 Card Monte". :!!:
Actually I have more, but this is just to kick things off....
Your turn, what effect do you hate?
Andy - February 24, 2006 03:38 PM (GMT)
1) Dream Vanish
Why? Cos its not really practical and definitely not clean in the end. And most importantly, I actually paid $55 for it!
2) The Mark!!
Sorry, I love this effect BUT i hate myself FOR purchasing this effect and am still kicking myself when ever i remember that i actually paid $80 for it when i could have gotten it for $50.
3) Invisibender aka Superman
Some might like this, but its really not for me. I found the shape of the gimmick to be quite weird and akward when in the hands. In addition, i really had a hard time trying to understand the manuscript with all the weird grammatical errors that accompanied it.
e.g, you have to place coin buy hand to turn you release for it to go upwards and and clean (ps, not an exact sentence from the script as i sold it off, but it went something like that).
Cheers!

Damn Andy.....everytime you mention paying too much for The Mark, i get reminded that I paid the same for it as you too

Thanks for making me feel a little better  :P

1) Dream Vanish
- When I was still a noobie, a complete vanish of a coin was like IMPOSSIBLE. I bought the Dream Vanish manuscript at $45, and hell, the VERY moment I knew the secret, I was like.. x10000. Yes, like Andy said, its not clean at the end, and its not something you can carry in your pocket all the time and perform it at ANYTIME, ANYWHERE. Moral of story: Stick with sleights! :D
2) Underground
- This is a GREAT trick, no kidding, but I find it TOO expensive. Far TOO expensive for a secret like that.
3) Black Gaff Deck
- $45 from Landmark, I realised that its just too expensive to use Black Tigers all the time to do tricks (you have to be more or less consistent in the decks you use), and I only managed to find good usage of like 5 to 10 cards in the deck of 56; probably because I didnt buy the Book, but if I did, thats gonna cost even more.
(Cancelling Black Gaff Deck off your Wishlist? Check out CAJ Deck)

Sorry if any of you do this trick but i really hate the "twisting arm illusion"
LarryDK - February 24, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
Honestly, i dont have tricks that i hate (in terms that i am only doing card magics now)
Cause i feel that there is only tricks that practical, or impractical. If that trick is impractical, but you still can learn from the idea made to it. Maybe it will inspired you somehow to create a similar yet more practical effect.
maybe i think harder, i might got some that i really hate.
zomaziz - February 25, 2006 01:04 AM (GMT)
hmm.. dtjk, i think tricks like underground are quite unknown, since apparently only the shops at shaw towers and kovan have it..
(if any other shop has it, they have the right to sue the guy that created the trick)
so.. that's probaly why its so expensive. i paid a high price, too.. they can jack up the price pretty high.
but still, the effect is not bad.
ohh ya, btw, 1 of the most uncomfortable tricks i dislike.. : balloon swallowing. first of all, i cant tie balloons. haha. and then my pump broke, so i have never really gotten the chance to try it out...
and the single time i swallowed 1, i felt really sick.
Blackwing - February 25, 2006 01:28 AM (GMT)
I hate all forms of 'spelling' tricks. I don't know dude, it just feels very amateurish to me. I know some pros use spelling tricks but yeah, it ain't my thing.
Lefty - February 25, 2006 04:53 AM (GMT)
Maths tricks and Tricks that require counting is just not my Style.! BORING!!!!!!! :g:
iNvIsIbLe - February 25, 2006 05:04 AM (GMT)
Well, I don't like spelling tricks, arm twisting illusion, some mathematics tricks, rope tricks and tricks that have low shocking effect.I can't denied that gimmick effect is more stronger than sleight of hand but some of the gimmick tricks are too simple and not nice.
bigbadwolf - February 25, 2006 06:18 AM (GMT)
Melt by Expertmagic <_< <_< <_<
and also tricks that require moderate to heavy amount of set up. yucks!
e.g emerge triumph, ultimate ambition.
zomaziz - February 25, 2006 12:42 PM (GMT)
lol.. i think emerge thriumph has a nice effect.. but i just can't get the you-know-that-shuffle properly done... so i dun use it, either. or any other such thriumph tricks.
(come to think of it, majority requires set-up)
M.A.D. - February 27, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
Tricks i hate,
a) those sucker props Mr Magic Wan sold to me, (it was ex....sorry, Mr Wan i am speaking the truth)
B) a coin cell bought from Mr Ang.(not useful)
c) tricks that C.A. perform every thrusday.(a bit of evil)
d) card tricks i can never hold them properly, (ok its my fault) and
e) tricks that other do to me.
llamalamer - February 28, 2006 04:36 PM (GMT)
I hate...
I hate...
Anything effect that lasts more than 4 mintues or anything that requires tons of sleights and moves.
My worldview of magic is always KISS
Keep It Simple! So-called magician!!
Jaspas - February 28, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
Anything that invovles the audience picking a card and you finding the card without REAL magic happening.
niquetan - March 3, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
Cut the deck into 4 packets, pick up the first packet, shuffle, deal 10 cards onto the 3rd pile from the 4th pile, memorize the card on the 2nd pile, place the 1st pile on top of your head, count to the 5th card in the 4th packet... you get the idea.
sand king - March 4, 2006 12:33 AM (GMT)
oh hell, i hate long tricks that my tiny peanut sized brain cant contain... worse still... math magic... yuck...
zomaziz - March 4, 2006 02:57 AM (GMT)
maths magic is the worse.. lol.. i think stacking decks is okay though.
anyway, just to add to my list of disliked tricks, the revolution coin vanish.
oh ya, and there's this colour change i really dislike.. but i can't say the name because its a giveaway.
a card is left sticking out of the deck diagonally, face up.. i shake the deck and the card changes. maybe i just lack practise, but for those who know what this CC is, bah well, i dun like it.

Jack Carpenter's Impulse Change.
OVerly complicated, long winded routines, anything involving counting/maths/spelling/memorised work just doesn't make it on my list. Anything that isn't remotely visual doesn't make it on my list.

1. Magic that doesn't make sense.
2. Magic performed without good presentation (I take your card ah... put here... oops dropped... wait wait which one is it? ok here... ok i put here ah... ok look now... HEY its on top!)
3. Flamboyantly painted boxes. (Ok, admit it. One more suspicious prop with Chinese Dragons painted on it, and I puke.)
4. Overly complicated stuff. Complicated stuff can make stuff have utterly no sense. And i hate that. (look at number 1)
5. Magic performed by egoistic people.
6. Math magic that reveals the numbers that you are using to accomplish it. (like wad niquetan said)
7. Magic with too many sleights and moves at one go. (I have seen routines with 8 second deals.)
And many more.
But of course it is always good to KNOW about such stuff. Maybe you can use your creativity to improve it.
Navarrone - March 4, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
For me, it is stuffs that few of my friends do. Pick a card, deal deal deal deal deal deal deal........................
This is your card

Another one:
THE DREAM VANISH.
Actually, there are A LOT of effects that you can hate. Just look at Penguin's Instant Downloads.
Or look at some of Ellusionist's stuff.
You can get a HUGE collection of effects you hate from there.
Honestly.
farbird - April 21, 2006 02:29 AM (GMT)
anything that uses IT..
I hate..
damn fearson for making it look so good on vids when it will never be as great when used for closeup.
hikkibiki - April 22, 2006 12:33 AM (GMT)
I really hate....
Math tricks. And Card tricks which are not visual. It's no different from math tricks. Eg, shuffle.. cut deck.. then shuffle then cut deck (for about a million times) then show me the effect.
Joe112 - April 23, 2006 01:01 PM (GMT)
Math tricks. Spelling tricks (most of them, anyway). Revolution Coin Vanish, which is totally lame. Wild Levitation is terrible too. That's about it, I guess. If the 21 Card Trick is counted as a magic trick, then that too, cos' everytime I'm doing magic some nerd will go "Hey! I know a trick too!" then grab my cards and begin doing the 21 Card Trick. At the same time he spoils my cards cos he doesn't know how to handle them prpoerly.
AcT - April 23, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)
1)looks like the number ONE tricks SMC hate is maths trick.
2) i hate the balducci levitation.
reason is everybody on the street today knows how it is done.( can say not everyone, but almost alot of people)
and if you do it on the streets, people wont get amazed, and you are making a fool out of yourself.
3)i also hate chris angel levitation for mastermind vol 2.
4) i hate the hummer card too. its a good trick but after i bought the trick, i did not use it alot. because i carry a sling bag everywhere i go. then sometimes prepare all already, go out accidentally and suddenly hear a "snap". =/
as for simple tricks like cut the deck, some counting, peek and many others , they are not as bad. with creative presentation will give good reaction.
by the way do anyone of you here still go around showing balducci levitaion? i am just curious because the balducci is considered outdated <_< .
lumpy - April 25, 2006 11:58 AM (GMT)
I hate tricks that require extensive, extended, long, angle sensitive, uncomfortable, unnatural or weird setup... and at the end you don't end up clean.
For example, The Raven, IT, some levitations, props that cannot be examined...
I like tricks that are either impromptu, have none of the above traits, or require minimal and quick setup with you ending clean :D
(too many examples to name)
