Title: Magic For Beginner
Description: Any motivator
zinally - February 28, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
I do not know whether during the SMC gathering/meet up there is a motivator for beginner in magic. This is important so that "they" will not feel out of place. The motivator can show the basic skill in magic such basic sleight of hand in card tricks & coins. Then recommend a good dvd's in requiring the knowledge. To encourage them, maybe for the next meeting they can show their skill.my 2 cents

Your asking us to teach em? If its just showing, im sure loads of people like huron and Multi-Talent aka alan, they were showing stuff.

The point of the gathering was to get people to mix around.
A new person could have approached any of the more skilled magicians.
For example, there was a guy who asked me to help him out with his pass. I could tell that he knew the fundamentals of the pass but he was too fast in his execution. So, I taught him to slow down when executing the pass and I taught him the squaring up motion.
Now, if he didn't approach me, I wouldn't know that he needed help right?
None of the SMC members are unfriendly. If you need help, YOU OUGHT TO APPROACH ONE OF US AND ASK FOR HELP.
Honestly, we don't have the time to ask every single person whether they need help in sleights.

Yep, i agree with Nick blackwing.
No need to be shy, people! ;) :)

Ya agree too.. In one sense, ya we can go over to the new guy and intro ourselves and talk to them about magic. But there is no way that we know whether he is a beginner or not, maybe he is few years into magic, but juz that he is new to the forum?
If he is beginner, it is easily noted from the way he carry his sleights and routines. So if we, from the audience view, observed any unusual things, as a performance, we juz point out to them that at wat point, the move is not good enough. Giving pointers is better and helps build the relation.

I think some of the senior members have already try their best in speaking to those newbies, new members should step forward and itnro themsevles and not hide around. If not you gonna experience how i feel in my 1st jamming session. :g:

Oh that person with me isn't a magician at all, total layperson. She's slightly interested in learning flourishes tho. She's bored, so I told her of this cool jamming thing. ^_^ She's called Merle, btw. :)

Just like to add. Once the ball gets rolling for someone, learning is one's own responsibility. As many people have mentioned - the fastest was to learn is to ask for help on material you're working on.

When you have a problem with a trick and you don't ask, nobody knows and nobody can help you to improve... ;)

I guess you are refering to me & co.
Anyway, I don't know anything about magic. Still starting on flourishes, and still pretty nooby. That's why I tend to stay with the flourish group.
The reason why I went there is because I'm free, but I feel really dump to be there since I couldn't do anything except a good spring.

On the first meeting I attended (Mondo Cafe'), didn't get to know many of you but I think I'm slowly getting to know more of you guys here ^_^
Last Saturday, my friends and myself felt awkward to approach you guys as most of you were flourishing, and we aren't flourishes ourselves. :P

I understand how you all feel because I went through the "oh no..I'm just a noob, how to ask or join them.." questions when I attended the 1st 2 gathering session about a year plus back then..
All I can say is, practise the stuffs you've been practising (no matter how simple the effect might be) then during the gathering session, just perform and ask for opinions. That'll break the ice.
Learning is neverending :)
So be prepared for me to "irritate" you all during the next gathering to watch my still-learning effects and give me comments..
eg. for those who were at the Mondo cafe the other time, any comments for my Bill in Lemon effect?
I know the patter needs to change :P
Any other comments?
Get it now? :)
