Title: Accesorising?
Description: Style over Substance?
Joe112 - March 2, 2006 09:52 AM (GMT)
Do accessories actually help your presentation and/or make you look more convincing as someone who does magic? Personally, I use some totally evil-looking necklaces, wristcuffs and rings, but does it really help? I mean, look at Criss Angel. He totally over-accessorises, but he's undeniably the one of the greatest new magicians of this age. Is accessorising to boost reactions/credibility a sign of a magician who favours style over substance? Ideas and opinions are greatly appreciated. ^_^

If you overaccessorise today, you'll be called a Criss Angel wannabe.
If you overaccessorised 15 years ago, you'd be a Mr T or Madonna wannabe. I think some here may be too young to remember Mr T :P
That's the way the world works. Bummer. :(

just dress decent, maybe just a dog tag or a chain will do... dont have to go the extand of wearing 100k gold rings, 200k gold neackless so on and so forth....

Just wear something simple. Like a dogtag or chain..I also wear rings sometimes. :D

need to wear so many blings blings for what reason?
i rather chalk up the points in presentation instead.

its part of the presentation too... how u present urself + performance presentation...

It depends on how you want to present yousrself. No one can stop you if you want to wear 10 rings and have every single part of your body pierced. Or something like that.
Bling isn't necessarily bad, though i don't use it. And I don't think you will be called Criss Angel Wannabe if you have a lot of bling.
How about giving a reason why you are wearing them, if you are not sure about whether to wear or not?

I believe consistency in image together with the type of effects you perform is important. Just as consistency in effects is essential to be a memorable performer, distinct from the rest.

well jus be yourself... look at michael ammar.. he looks like a plain old man but when he is performing, he is magical...

The max is 24K only leh... (j/k)
As for presentation, it depends on what presentation you want the audience to expect.
For example, if you want a classy stage preformance, wear tux. Even be like De'vo if you want.

yea some accesories that can help your magic
e.g Cyril's ring
Xproject - March 10, 2006 03:43 PM (GMT)
ya accesories do help in your magic but i think is only needed when u doin a show n it fit the patter n the presentation, other then if u are not doing any shows n u just performing magic 4 your friends ect i dont think there is an extend to hwere u need all this acesories unless it is part of your presentation if not there is no reason 4 u to have accesories
simple n direct is always the best

I-mage
Thismeans that when you do your entrance you EN- Trance the people.
If it take acessories to en-trance and bring forth your persona, please do so.

haha Jeff, i love Mr T when i was young man..... lol that guy was cool....
i like his fight with Rocky bow boy...
OK off topic
I think its cool to accesories.. even though i dont. coz i dont look good with rings and it aint me wearing wrist chains etc..
im more of clean style. I just wear watch. the most ill go is perhaps a necklace or a choker.
I dont look good with rings...

Accesorising isnt really that useful , if you manage to stop your audience and start a captivating patter, they wouldnt care much about what your wearing and stuff.
For me i just wear a watch and ring . nothing much anyway.

A thread on fashion & accessories... how can I miss it?
First of... you gotta look at it in larger context. What is the persona of your performing self?
If you adopt the gentlemanly Tommy Wonder style, obviously you have minimal accessories... simply put, a classic watch or simple ring (for some PK effects?) at most while you wear a smart clean suit.
Accessorising has its logical purpose too, besides looking nice. Magic practicality is one, but there's also the intention of transmitting a specific image to your audience. Like the given example of Chris Angel, with all his bling.
Maybe for girls, a tight tank or a (currently very in) flower broach on the chest can provide all the misdirection you need... for the guys, well, you can get the SMC tshirt that says

It might also shift the attention of magic from the hands to some other parts of the body? :!!:

Accesorising do not really have a part to play in your performance.... Doesn’t mean that if you wear alot of chains you can perform like Criss Angel.....
However i do agree that it helps in getting attention! People may be more willing to watch your performance  Maybe due to the recent Mind Freak series on Channel 5, Singaporeans think that all magiacians with heavy accesories are good magicians.... B)
Hope this doesn't spawn little Criss Angels all over Singapore's Magic circle... :ph43r:
