Title: What's a good impromptu effect?

vin87 - March 19, 2006 12:28 PM (GMT)
mhmmm I think the best impromptu trick would be coin thru soda can by W:H damn damn cool. ^_^ anywhere and anytime !
what about you guys think? =)

GordonLi - March 19, 2006 02:12 PM (GMT)
i think magic should be presented as impromptu... (whether or not it really is)

script in "accidental" stuff, present it as the magic is just happening there and then, use phrases like "lets try something else"...

makes the magic seem spontaneous and makes the audience feel special.

vin87 - March 19, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)
Post edited. Please read the rules.

AcT - March 22, 2006 08:31 AM (GMT)
well all magic will be best if the presentation is right . the way you present it.

different magicians perform identical magic tricks in different way. their presentation etc. will produce different impact.

by the way, the coin through soda, must waste 1 buck to buy the can..

some/most magicians very poor. lol

zib - March 22, 2006 09:31 AM (GMT)
the healed and sealed coke can also wastes another $1. maybe we should combine both? ^_^ saves the trouble of drinking so much also.

anyway, healed and sealed isn't impromtu, so pardon me.
one of my favourite impromtu tricks would be any simple ace routine without using a table. i think aces are just a good way to start, since you can move on to other things from there, or just stop straight..

i_neveregret - March 22, 2006 11:10 AM (GMT)
IMO cards arent that impromtu
to a spectator, a healed and sealed is more impromtu than any of your card effects
I do rubber bands, coin and finger rings and i prefer rubber band magic

impromtu, visual with restoration, vanishes and penetration. when well presented, it's a miracle

jonatha - March 23, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)

:) i would suggest you do coin thru can than heal and sealed. i require less set up and the effect is as good

Aloy - March 30, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
Coin that falls upwards.

Larry Barnowsky - March 30, 2006 04:50 PM (GMT)
A quick coin flurry.
Crazy Man's Handcuffs
chink a chink with bottle caps or sugar cubes

freakshowjim - March 30, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
i'd love to know what is your fav. imprompthu trick and why.. my fav. and i guess it should be the same for alot of you out there is the crazy mans handcuffs by mike ammar(once again i emphisise it is not by harlen just because he performed it on his dvd) it is one of my first trick and i have been doing it for more than eleven years now.
i first saw david copperfield doing it in one of his tv specials and fell in love with it. the effect is so simple to understand and rubberbands are so easy to aquire.
Some say there is no such thing as imprompthu, but to me this is as close as it can get compared to paper ball oth(which always gets a good laugh). nevertheless it still needs preperation which is practice... it is easy to do but to make it look flawless takes tons of practice i personally spent close to $200 on that trick alone(don't believe me? i got the manualscript, dan halens tape and ammars classic renditions vol 2),and i still think it is money well spent.

Doublelifter - March 31, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
Pinnacle in my opinion is one of the best impromptu effect, just a rubber
band and a ring, all items readily available.

Larry Barnowsky - April 2, 2006 01:26 PM (GMT)
I agree with Doublelifter. Pinnacle is another great impromptu effect. You could also use that same ring for a ring off cord using a shoelace. Ring Leader and Relentless Ring DVDs are good sources for that.

Incarneto - April 4, 2006 05:35 AM (GMT)
I love rubber bands.. just throw a few rubber bands on the floor.. when u need it... pick it up... haha!

[A]lex - April 7, 2006 05:36 PM (GMT)
i prefer doing some classic vanish or coin to soda can. pretty amazing :)

GordonLi - April 9, 2006 06:26 AM (GMT)
i think healed and sealed is a great impromptu effect (please dont confuse that with impromptu trick).

magic should as far as possible be presented (the effect) as impromptu whether or not it actually is impromptu.

some of my fave impromptus:
Some card tricks (with little or no setup)
CMH
Pinnacle
Coin production, vanish, etc

Ace - April 9, 2006 04:46 PM (GMT)
Well audience can't tell the difference between a impromptu effect and a impromptu trick.... Hence try to make everything as impromptu as possible...

Pick up a rubberband from the floor is aways better than taking it out of your pocket.... If someone else is carrying a deck borrow it....

I think this topic is more about impromptu trick rnot impromptu effect

If thats the case i'll recommend
Pinnacle
Arm twisting illusion
Coin vanishes
crazyman handcuffs
Coin through soda( actually you cannot do this with most cans in Singapore sometimes i just cannot find the right can <_< )

Well most of the time if i'm outside i'll 100% have my deck with me...I believe some people also have TT of IT with them unless they are bathing or sleeping.... Hence Card effect are quite impromptu to me as i can perform them whenever people ask me to do so....

farbird - April 11, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)

That post was after the above post if you notice the date.....

Ok! It can be performed with any can!!! Those who don't believe go buy this trick! Its really worth it!!

Multi-Talent - April 14, 2006 10:56 AM (GMT)
I'll say sleight of hand effects are the best impromptu effects, I'll give some examples that I always do:

Classic P***(any 50 cents/botter caps, any 1-3 coins routine)
Paddle moves (Macdonald/KFC straws, pen, pencil)
Re-cap (pen with a cap)
Liquid metal/spoon bending (can find in any food court/kopitiam)
Mind reading effects (using paper/tissue and pen only)
Finger Fantasy (using your own fingers!)

In any cases, things which can be found anywhere and can be performed using sleights are the best. In the above e.g. as long as you have coin(s), tissue and pen and are having dinner you can start a 1/2 hr performance already. Of cos there's more effects that is not written here, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

(I don't term cards as impromptu cos nobody will bring cards out unless you buy)

Lefty - April 25, 2006 06:09 AM (GMT)
My fav. impromptu tricks are... Liquid metal/spoon bending and Arm twisting illusion. Easy and unexplainable :g:

M.A.D. - April 29, 2006 04:56 AM (GMT)
FD Coin vanish
Basic crazyman handcuff :P
3 card move B)

zinally - May 13, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)

Dan Harlan also has a series of 3 Videos/DVD out called Magic with rubber bands videos vol. 1, 2, 3 – Dan Harlan

There are some reviews at the Magic Forum: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtop...23548&forum=111

There are a few gems in the series as well as Bandshark.

My personal take regarding cards as impromptu magic is that although carrying a deck of cards and performing with it may be deemed to be 'un-natural' or 'who-carries-a-deck-of-cards-out ?!', there are many great reasons to use a cards. (a full deck)

1. People are immediately inducted into the atmosphere of magic. "He (the magician) took out a pack of cards..."
2. With cards, you can achieve virtually all the effects in magic. (Transposition, Torn/Restored, Transformation, Vanishing, etc)

bigbadwolf - May 17, 2006 03:24 AM (GMT)
Crazy Man Handcuffs,
Stigmata,
A lame coin vanish  :P

exohordon - May 17, 2006 05:42 AM (GMT)
What's a lame coin vanish?

Ning - May 20, 2006 03:46 PM (GMT)
Don't look down on the simple stuff ;) The effects can be really strong! Rubber bands are still great impromptu effects, and money... well, you always carry them around, so use them to your greatest advantage

Ning - May 20, 2006 03:52 PM (GMT)
Oh ya, Dan Harlan's STARKLE effect is really cute too! Just grab and use 'em free napkins ;) And like Farbrid mentioned... vodoo ash @ clubs & unbreakable toothpicks/ disappearing salt shakers/ bending cutlery/ etc @ cafes!

vin87 - May 22, 2006 07:49 AM (GMT)
thanks guys. i think i'm going to explore more of RUBBERBENDS! :P

eryanic - June 22, 2006 12:02 PM (GMT)
I second Starcle...although i haven't performed it, but i think a proper patter is needed to make the effect strong. if not people may just come up with some reason to explain why it happened (and their reason is correct normally!)

Dan harlan also has an impromptu pen thru dollar which is quite convincing

Reuben_Wong - June 5, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
Here are my favourite 3 impromptu effects that I do.
I love them because I don't even have to think about which routine is easier or more hard hitting to do...

1. Revolution - Kevin Parker
2. Stigmata - Wayne Houchin / Banachek
3. Telepath - alphamagic

They are simple, and hard hitting and can be done on your whim and fancy.

^_^

I like to do this Penetrating Straws learnt from one of Lu Chen's book.

leolight - October 14, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
My personal favourites are Crazy Man's Handcuffs, Torn & restored corner of a bill (after it is folded into quarters), Kollosal Killer (although you have to carry it but I carry it all the time) and if someone hands you a deck - K.E.N.T, because you don't even have to start by touching the deck

Louis - October 15, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
What is the title of Lu Chen's book ?

He has three books available in SG. Think that one is found in "Ah! Lost to Magic" Part 1 (or 2) (title loosely translated). You can find it in popular.

I did a study a few years ago for my SAM Assembly. It contains "favorites", most of which might be done impromptu.

February - Favorite Tricks
Getting ready for the February meeting will be as easy or difficult as simply perfecting your favorite trick/routine and sharing it on the program with Roger Gorss or in the after-meeting Jam Sessions. At any rate, the monthly topic should urge us to really work on what we consider to be our favorite or signature effects/routines. My favorites are my untitled rubber-band routine and the "Roach Trick". But, since everyone has seen them, I probably should come up with a couple of new favorites. A "favorite", of course, is purely subjective, and I was curious about what some of the old master magicians may have liked to do. My search took me to Hugard's Magic Monthy, Vol 6, in which Jean Hugard listed many standard effects and his favorite presenters of those tricks/routines. He does not say that the effects/routines were favorites of the magicians listed, but he selected the tricks and magicians for their "extra good audience tricks/reactions." That sounds good to me, so here is his list:

Afghan Bands, Blackstone
Dove Pan, G. Ray Terrell
