Title: Mentalism
Description: Using cards
Sehnsucht - April 1, 2006 01:14 PM (GMT)
may i know some sources where i can learn mentalism with cards only? Because i've seen osterlind's and banachek's, in which they have mostly envelope, metal bending tricks. So are there some videos or books where only card mentalism is taught?

You can check out Max Maven's stuff. He has plenty of mental effects using cards. Can be found in book and video/ dvd format.

Maybe you should start by using those card mentalism, or whatever you call them, and perform them.

By any chance you are refering to ESP Cards?
Those with the wavy lines, circle, etc faces?

I believe he's refering to a normal deck of cards. Or i maybe wrong.

yea esp cards included as well. Anyway because most of these videos teach an assortment of mentalism effects, but what i'm really looking for is a video which teaches only effects done with either esp or regular bikes. Any ideas?

i also don't like mentalism tricks involving envelope or any other equipments. it just feel boring. straight forward is still the best i guess.
if you want videos teaching on mentalism only on normal bike cards, i don't know any sources but most of it involve f___ing and controlling.
hmm. maybe you can try some f___ing of cards then do some mentalism showmanship. there are many different ways though....
please censor terms.

 mentalism involving envelopes and other equipment are boring? Sorry, I beg to differ.
Lots of mentalism effects involves a substantial amount of presentation. Hence, if its boring, its not in the effect, but in the way it was presented.
For straight forward effects, wouldn't a color ch***e look much better? :ph43r:

 well andy basically,
people have their own personal preferences. for instance some magician prefer close up magic and not stage magic.
some like cards more to coins. etc etc
so for some people like me, they like straight forward mentalism more than envelopes and other stuffs.
i didn't meant that mentalism with envelopes etc are boring.they are all very good effects for entertainment. but to me personally i find it boring regardless of whether good presentation :)
maybe just my nature

envelopes are boring?
i think not. imo, envelopes are useful for several reasons.
firstly, they store your prediction, and thus you can have someone hold on to it.
secondly, it also creates the sense that you cannot temper with the prediction.
thirdly, it creates a buildup of suspense when revealing the prediction.
anyway, most of us (including myself) have relatively less experience regarding mentalism, so im sure there's still a whole lot of possibilites we have yet to explore.

Envelopes are not boring..... I agree with that.... You just have to make the prediction seemed impossible! Richard Osterlind is very good with that...
Anyway i think some people don't like envelope effect because normally people don't bring envelopes around with them to perform magic... It might give people the impression that it is a gimmick envelope... Moreover some (especially those "new age street magician") may think that envelopes are out of fashion so to speak....not impromtu enough,,,
There are ways to make the encelope effect more impromtu, Just perform with envelopes you find lying around..... instead of taking them out of your pocket...

well i got some envelopes effects for mentalism. but i do not have any normal envelopes so i used plain red packets(ang pao) as my envelope.

would be very useful during chinese new year =D

Using Red packets is a nice idea :)
Glad to know that you are willing to give "envelope" effects a try instead of just finding them boring regardless of the presentation :)
I think for mentalism, the presentation is what makes it interesting as they are usually not that sleight intensive as compared to coins and cards.

yeah, recently i tried mentalism regarding envelopes kind of effects. and the effect was great too..
so everything all must try first before you know how good it is.
