Title: Local Patter/one-liners
Description: Let's invent some
Aloy - April 4, 2006 06:45 PM (GMT)
I think we can agree that most of our patter/jokes we use during an effect is very "americalized". And it's no wonder, coz a large majority of magic books/dvds/videos are by US magicians who invented their own jokes/one-liners/patter.
Perhaps we can think up some that is localised to Singapore. Yes, it may not make so much sense if you use them to foreigners, but used locally (which i assume is where most of us do our stuff), it should give a fresh, personalised approach to our effects.
Let's all try to think of some? Don't worry if you think yours is lame, it might spark something in someone else.
Here's 1 to start the ball rolling:
(When letting spec inspect an item)
"Please examine this deck/box/card to see if it's fair/normal. If you see any suspicious articles, please inform our staff, or call 999" :g:

''Err... you manage to find anything up/in my sleeves/pocket/box/hands I treat you chicken rice tomorrow''
And if you are doing a fake distraction, just acting, not a real one, just say '' A! LOOK! Pua Chu Kang!''
haha glad Aloy started this topic.

Sure thing. But i'm not sure it would make any sense in M'sia thou. Probably only S'poreans will get that one.

Some thoughts:
1. Ask about if they know these cards you are using (assuming aladdins) can be bought at that 7-11 down that street. later watch them run down that street and enter the 7-11.
2. Use local terms during a gambling routine.
3. Isn't that Tammy from NYP? :) (When they look, quickly do your p**s and pretend nothing happened.)
4. Don't touch my cards - just in case you have bird flu/SARS/Hand foot Mouth Disease. (give a megawatt smile here)
My opinions on having local patter is that its all about relating your magic to your audience, in this case with your words. I think we need to train till we come to a stage where we can suit out patter to any situation, be it Singapore, Malaysia or Siberia.
It's the little things that make the difference. Just by using some Singlish here and there will make it sound "Singaporeanized" already. When performing to school students (which I always do), say this during an ace assembly routine:
"I am going to show you EXACTLY how gamblers cheat at poker. You got foolscap and pen? Feel free to take notes, because there's gonna be a short quiz next period!"
When speaking to a lady, use more gentle language. When among friends, feel free to let go and talk in your rough style.
Remember: it's those little things that REALLY count.

That's funny....(kinda)
Except don't REALLY use it to distract them to execute your moves. Use it to PRETEND that you want to distract them with that to execute your move (e.g. when an effect pretend to screw up and you want to fix it).
If they REALLY turn their head, even if you managed to pull a jumbo deck out of a mini deck box later, it will not long ben amazing. They will think "oh, he made me looked away and must have done something"

Speaking of localising, poker is a very uncommon game in local context :)
Dai Di or Man Luck is probably much more common.
However, when you do talk about poker, people are not exactly unfarmiliar with it either. Just that they associate it with HK movies and ESP and God of Gamblers etc etc.
HarapanOng - April 9, 2006 01:25 PM (GMT)
AHHA sudden brainwave. Use the 4 deuces in any ace assembly routine, just that you talk about dai dee instead of poker.
That's localising.
Aloy sir, i was joking about doing the p**s when they look away.

I thought of a local patter for the ACR. Basically just mention the story of Ah Huat who is the typical kiasu Singaporean and always wants to rise to the top of the pack.
Then can mention Economic Restructuring (accompanied with shuffling actions).
My routine would probably end with a card-to-pocket where I pretend to have botched the routine when the card isn't at the top. At this point, I'll say "Oh wait, I forgot! Actually Ah Huat was so ambitious (or kiasu) that he eventually migrated overseas (reach into pocket to get card)."
Yea... Actually can rename the routine to the Kiasu Card Routine. Local enough?
And best of all, before starting any card tricks... Just begin by talking about the new Integrated Resorts and the casinos there, and how you're going to show them what to watch out for when playing there.

I forget which guy form SMC used it on me before.. but it's great. I love it and sometimes i use it.
>>> After/During a trick, u know the trick die die cannot let ppl to touch or mess up, another word, it's setting up.
Ask the audiences if anyone wish to check the deck ?
Surly got one person wan to touch or check, if really noone, push towards anyone, ANYONE.
They will like "eh, k, i check.........."
Once their fingers/thumb touch the deck and before grabbing it, pull it back to yourself, and sound it out clear to the person ......
"OK, THANK YOU~ for check the deck, now I will go on........"
People will laught around esp the guy who you just fool to "check" the deck.
NOT MY IDEA, it's from someone's idea during a SMC Un-offical Jamming session.
