Title: Performing Magic In Ns
Description: share your experiences

Ben - April 14, 2006 07:53 PM (GMT)
Do any guys perform magic in camp during their NS days? If yes, what kinda tricks do you do? One thing for sure, you can't bring cards in, unless you're good at smuggling. Anyway just a casual question. I'm keeping a very low profile in there, but maybe not for someone else. Right, Alexander? ;)

LarryDK - April 14, 2006 09:41 PM (GMT)
I haven start my magic life then. But talk abt smuggling, well, dun need to smuggle one la, juz know the guard house ppl and they make life easy for you.

Maybe its my job scope..

walk through the DB door like how copperfeild walked through the great wall of china lol, just beware if they have guard dogs... lol

I have a friend who always perform for our officers. Close-up. Cards. Well, to see if your camp is strict or not, just look at the number of camera handphones lurking around. If there are many, chances are, showing magic with cards is not a problem at all.

I even showed it to my CSM who's super strict on everything. He got a laugh and reaction which is good.

Show it to the big bosses with kids. Chances are they will want you to perform for their kids' birthdays.

If cards are a no no, there are still plenty close-up which doesn't require cards. Sinful (plenty of drinks machine), rubberbands, coin vanishes, twisting arm (you're in long 4 many times, right?).

It's a good place to practise your escapes and perform as well. There are plenty of thick, sturdy ropes and you can finally put your escape knowledge into good use. Well, if your unit always send people to DB, you'll have a chance at the handcuffs! IF your in charge allows. Super rare but still possible if you on good terms with him.

IMO, you can do many things. There are many events in the SAF. You can even perform stage with the right connections. Just do whatever you can.

Just don't play with rounds. -_-

LarryDK - April 16, 2006 07:25 PM (GMT)
Haha, Nice one.

Like what nyx said, its seems endless, but it seems like if you are store I/C for QM branch, then best liao, you got everything u need, from ropes to handcuffs, to pens, to paper and also rounds. But of course, dun play with rounds la, haha!!

Oh ya, if you are in armour, u might consider making the tank disappear.. Haha!! If you think its possible.. :P

Hisoka - April 28, 2006 11:05 AM (GMT)
LOL do cig tricks... :P

joeltay81 - August 6, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
Try doing "Hole in Head" at the range. Sure get a few laughters. I've haven't got this trick yet. Wonder if it is really worth it.

niquetan - August 7, 2006 05:09 AM (GMT)
I know a magician (who has stopped doing magic) friend who convinced the SGTs he ate stones for fun. Pick any stone at rifle range and he eats it in front of everyone.

muscleaxl - August 7, 2006 09:28 AM (GMT)
I was a BMT instructor during NS and I had this recruit who can perform the following magic:

1. Always able to make himself disappear during SOC, Route March and Field Camp. The best part was, his absence was never noticed.

2. Managed to make his eyes go red and conjure up a fever at will, using gimmicks like Colgate and cigarette butt.

3. Able to vanish his bunkmates' handphone and money into his own drawer.

Wow, do I have a tale to tell.

Well, I entered the Police Academy, pretty shabby looking, with a deck of cards in my pocket. I was cursed, as I was one and half hours late. Not only that, but during the strip search, the guards confisicated the deck, despite my assurance that I was a magician. Oh well.

I entered my new home for the next 6 months. No one liked me. I looked like an Indian, said I was Arab but spoke like an American - product of an international school up bringing - no regrets.

I was getting alot of crap from the neighbouring squads and no one took me seriously. I had no choice...I made my mess card vanish ^_^

That got their attention.

I then said that I could do more if I had a deck of cards. The squad leader at the time handed me MY deck, the one that was confisicated earlier - how he got it I still have no idea. I opened the deck and hence the show began.

Upon knowledge of barrack raids, I decided to be smart about the whole thing. I went to my OC and talked to him. He allowed me to bring my magic box into the academy, but wanted a list of what was in it. He also said that if anyone was caught gambling in my squad, it was my head on the line.

I agreed.

I blew my squad away with my magic. I then went to the neighbouring squad and blew them away. Over the next couple of months I went from company to company just performing magic.

During a barrack raid, the FI's found my magic box and found all my decks. I told them, "If there's a problem, you may speak with my OC, he has given me clearance." The FI was furious and said, "Don't think that just cos you're a magician you can do any damn thing you please." I shook my head, "Wouldn't dream about it."

He stormed off, but that wasn't the last I would see of him.

A couple of days later he stormed into my barrack, marched right up to me and demanded to be shown a trick. He said he had heard from the other FI's that I was the 'real thing'. I performed a simple 2 card monte effect and that was enough for him. He handed the cards back to me, shaking. I kid you not. He was shaking and he looked at me and said, "Ok...ok, uh, I won't punish you, ok? Uh, I won't punish you at all," and with that, he briskly walked out of the room. My whole barrack cheered. He never did punish me, or my squad from that day on.

One day, the OC from another squad, in another company, came looking for me. He found me and asked if I was the magician going around barracks performing. I said yes. He ordered me to escort him to my barrack. I did. All my squadmates were fast asleep, in the afternoon, when me and him came in. He gave them all hell, and then sat me down. "Show me what you can do..." he said.

"Ok," I replied and I proceeded to blow him away.

He then admitted that he was a magician as well, though not a constant performing one. We became instant friends and he is still one to this day.

My squad gave me hell for the incident that day, but it was worth it.

In the end, I left PA with alot of friends. I don't normally use magic to make friends, I don't think I need it, but when you're in a situation, where everyone hates you before they even think of finding a reason to like you, you're left with no other choice.

I performed during our last meal at the mess, on a projected screen. Got a standing ovation from the whole intake, that was sweet.

Later on, after posting out, my old OC friend called me up and invited me to perform for the PA D&D in KL, all expenses paid trip. How could I say no? They even gave me $250 to buy the supplies I needed, that one was fun. The whole trip was memorable and I enjoyed every minute! I managed to showcase my latest closer and it went over very well.

I then performed for my own division's D&D, which to date, is my best show so far.

I also performed at the latest CNY show, but that show bombed badly. Major technical glitch and lack of rehearsals contributed to a pretty crappy show. I still cringe when I think about that show. I had a 20 minute spot on stage, but at the last moment, I was informed that I only had 10, the comissioner of police was late, so my show was affected. Luckily, my closer was pretty strong, so it ended on a nice note, but I still would rather not think of that show, I wouldn't even watch the footage from that show - too painful.

So yeah, if you are going to perform magic in NS, do it wisely, get the green lights from the people higher up and you should be fine.

Freeze - August 7, 2006 06:40 PM (GMT)
Well well, so by knowing magic in NS. Life gonna be easier for you? If so, I'm going to practice hard for 1 more year.. :!!:

But i don't really know how to approach the higher ups man.. I'm scared instead of asking whether i could get my 52 cards, i'll get 52 push-ups.

Magicdow - August 8, 2006 02:02 AM (GMT)
I know some people got into the Music and Drama company of SAF because of magic. So you might want to work towards that goal.

W3iRdKiD - September 17, 2006 10:37 AM (GMT)
Haha exactly! Can't bring cards into camp so it's kind of troublesome. Trying to pick up mentalism to perform in camp now but I'm taking quite a long time to learn

Gabriel-wong - September 18, 2006 02:36 PM (GMT)
Wow! So magic can make your life easier in NS? haha.
I still have about 4 to 5 years till NS and I can consider my skills as not bad. Not perfect, just not bad.

Haha, so I'm gonna practise harder and blow anyone.

Hey!?!? If only ET can be brought into camp. If you get 100 push up, Do it. Then give them back 100 shocks.

joeltay81 - September 19, 2006 01:48 PM (GMT)
What about after you give them 100 shocks and they tell you... 20 push ups per shock?

Freeze - September 19, 2006 04:36 PM (GMT)
Lol Then do Stigmata, or you can levitate right in front of them. The grass and your army green pants would act as perfect camouflage to pull of that trick.

But i wouldn't know how to deal with the boots.. :D

Mabas - October 20, 2006 01:32 PM (GMT)

Hey guys, glad that you guys are bringing magic into NS. It just brings more life to your daily routine in camp. As i am writing this, I'm thinking about the past experiences i went through in my NS. Just a note, my ORD date is 9 december 2006, which is tomorrow. I actually have mixed feelings about leaving NS. I've enjoyed and hated NS during the different phases i went through in life. I enjoyed my BMT, you can really meet all types of different people there. I even made friends with 'Ang Kong's(ppl with tatoos all over their body), which is pretty unusual, as my past friends are the nice and proper ones. They actually taught me lots of stuff and made me a better person.

But the phase i totally enjoyed in NS is SISPEC, (just a note, you guys entering NS now got it lucky, its now next to SAFTI, not dreaded TEKONG). I had to spent 6 months in TEKONG, but it was worth it. If anyone of you guys are selected to enter there, just some advice, never give up, no matter how difficult the odds. I believe that we need to bring magic into SAF, it really livens up the atmosphere. Actually, i have brought many magic items into camp, cards, Pk rings( i know the guard com there, so i guess i didn't have difficulty getting past). Just a word of caution, never EVER allow your platoon mates to gamble with your cards, you will get it as you were the one who brought in the cards. I have performed in front of my collegues and men and they enjoyed it. It builds a closer bond with them. Anyway i want to end off my message by saying that its time to move on to the next phase of my life but i would never forget my NS experience. B)

Oh and by the way, anyone of you who are enlisting soon, if you need any advice or help, you can PM me. I would help you readily. ^_^

muscleaxl - December 9, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
My God!! Reading Vincent's thread made me feel so old!!

I was enlisted in what.... 1999!!! Before the millienium!! At my time, BMTC 2 was at Nee Soon Camp, SISPEC was at Pasir Labar (oh yes, they shifted back there recently)!!

I wonder do the school still use M16 or now all using SAR 21?

Ok.. :off:

[Vincent] - December 9, 2006 01:28 PM (GMT)
The schools are usually still using M16s, but for the unit, all of them are using SAR21s. Muscleaxl, u did not take your BMT in tekong? I thought BMT was in tekong for the past 10 years?

muscleaxl - December 11, 2006 03:40 AM (GMT)
BMTC in Tekong was started in 1999.

BMTC2 was in Nee Soon before moving to the existing premises. I was the last batch in Nee Soon. BMTC 1 was in Tekong all the while. Last time they called it Camp 1 and Camp 2. The famous Charlie Coy ghost story was from Camp 2 I think.

Anyway, I was an instructor from Viper Coy. Hehe..
