Description: Second Article ~

I believe you guys might be thinking what will i be posting for my second article, i be posting mostly on all your performance needs e.g(Style, Pattering, Movement, Handling Hecklers and Misdirection) and i might write even more while thinking of others as i write this.

Well i would just say every magician has a certain style, a special, a very unique style. But some really don't have a style, which they normally start and finish the whole performance with a "With a Snap, your card has jump write to the top", but some magicians like David Blaine for instance using passive words like "LOOK", "WATCH", "CHECK THIS OUT". He's using passive language to attract them and at the same time this could be a misdirection. Find the style which really suit yourself, be yourself while performing and while you aren't, don't be a stern person in real life and suddenly while performing, you changed to become a Joker and make everyone laugh, just be yourself. Trust me and you will make your performance much more enjoyable, it will be the TRUE you.

Pattering usually i would define it as a speech for your performance, you don't really need to REMEMBER the way your mentor performance, or a magician like Blaine. Just like what i say above, have your own Unique Style. Normally a pattering would be based on your charisma, and how good your charisma would define on how confident you are while performing to an audience of all SIZE. If you feel diffculty in pattering properly during a performance, take in a DEEP Breath
normally this would happen when you are nervous, i only get nervous when i am performing for magicians. But i try to take a deep breath and perform as normal ^_^.

Movement: Some performance requires dance movement, or a little of leg movement. Don't be a stick or a bamboo pole, just sway a little not that much . Just a little to stop yourself from being nervous, a little sway actually let you be relax and help you to perform even better. I did it before and i succeeded with huge improvement.

Sometime i notice that magicians get nervous when they are paid to do a show and while they are performing to their friends, they look very relax compared to a paid show. Some methods can be used to solve this problem, just take your paid audience as your friend, let them enjoy the show. LET them be your friend, let them make their money worthwhile. At least they know you are friendly and a nice guy and at the same time you would make new friends. It would also make you relax instead of nervous.

Hecklers: I would define them as a skeptic audience or a skeptic layman someone who doesn't really believe in magic, believe everything has a reason behind it. But this doesn't end at here, he want to spoil your whole PERFORMANCE as well.

The above term could be referred as a MAGICIAN, FRIENDS, RELATIVE too. A heckler could be anyone, someone who is jealous of your attraction and really want to spoil it so much. So there are alot of meaning of hecklers, someone who don't believe in magic but want to spoil the whole performance, someone who is jealous of your attractive image and just want to tarnish it.

I would explain on how to deal with hecklers in just a few short points:

(1) When a heckler says he know how to do the trick, normally i will just pass him the deck and ask him to perform it. While performing, kindly just divert your audience attention to yourself again, and let him be a fool. Or we could see how well can he perform, or you could just let him perform and just talk to other people in the audience. It may seem rude, but remember who's the 1 being rude first ?

(2) When a heckler get too overboard, normally just walk away if the above points cannot be used. Its not worth getting caught by them but normally i wouldn't, so i would just let them stare at my pass and make the card jump up, and say "Hey Did you see anything smart alec ?" then just pack up and walk off.

(3) If the whole performance is stall by a heckler, just stop the whole performance till the person is gone (if you are doing street magic) (not advisable for parlour magic). Anyway if things really get out of control, explain the condition to the rest of the audience, and just walk away. They will know its the heckler who cause this and he will get alot of angry stares while he is having his dinner or while he's walking away. - Remember you aren't paid to take those kind of insults from ANY Hecklers, explain to the management on why did you left that table, that performance. I believe they would understand, but normally i would just ask the person to sit down before i decided to make him vanish from the room. Make a joke out of it.

(4) Lastly try not to create a disturbance, so just try to make a joke out of the heckler instead of making him angry. Just ask him to "Shut up, you sit down. before i decide to make your underpant vanish" I believe most of the audience will take that remark as a joke.

So the overall morale is just not to fumble and be scare of hecklers, they are human too. They will feel weird and out of place if people were to look at him with some angry stares, so the next time you come across a few hecklers, just make jokes out of them. Or you could kindly try Step 1 to 3.

Misdirection: it's the most important for ALL MAGICIANs, this is the word that i must stress, ALL MAGICIANs. Every magicians has their own ways to misdirect their audience, in a jokeful manner or just a few flourishes, false cuts, charlier cut infront of them while doing something sneaky. but while doing something SNEAKY, just don't make too obvious, make it as though its part of your daily performance and that is what you normally do, for instance 2 card monte. If you guys know what i am talking, it take a little swaying action to get the whole effect done out perfectly. So the swaying is some sort of misdirection, but that is not all. Your pattering, your hand movements and etc plays a part in it. You could also speak to 1 of your quiet audience all of a sudden and people will actually TAKE NOTE cause the person might be too quiet in the first place and they will take note of him cause he didn't make noise in the first place. Ask him some relevant questions and etc.

With this i hope i have posted a helpful article to all, if i haven't kindly MSN me or PM me.

Excellent... this is a very good post..

A heckler could be anyone, someone who is jealous of your attraction and really want to spoil it so much. So there are alot of meaning of hecklers, someone who don't believe in magic but want to spoil the whole performance, someone who is jealous of your attractive image and just want to tarnish it.

This is very true...

And also its a very rare chance for those heckler to find out if magic is for real. They don't get to see magic often so they will take this chance to find out.

The 4 points you mention is also a very good tip to deal with them.

There was once when I perform a trick to a friend. He gave me lots of problem and I immediatly stopped the trick and went to perform to the other friend. My second friend was speechless.

Later on, my first friend(the tough cookie) asked me to show him the trick. Its like he really wants to see the trick.

I told him off... telling hm that since he doesn't want to be entertain by me why ask me to perform?

This is a very good article...

The bit on hecklers....

Well, if you are doing a paid show, chances are the person paying you are not going to care very much about your "artistic integrity" or your "uncompromising viewpoint about the art of magic". The host essentially expects you to entertain that's all. Being rude will be the very last thing they want from you.
I am inclined to think that your suggestions are a little drastic for real life situations. Maybe if the heckler is not too "promenient" you can get away with some sacarstic jokes about it, spoken in real jest. But what if the heckler is the birthday boy or an important guest? Or if you are in a place where the guys have had a little wine/beer? Would you really wanna risk offending a slightly intoxicated VIP? And if you think that's bad, imagine how much more tricky for female magicians. Just ask Ning ;)

Winder - November 5, 2004 04:35 PM (GMT)
Well thats why i said being rude is the last resort, normally just come up with some jokes. I forgot about saying what should i do if the heckler is a birthday boy and girl, the problem is i never encounter this situation yet. Lastly i don't do kids show -_-, i don't really like doing kids show. Haha

illusionist - November 5, 2004 04:49 PM (GMT)
Hahaha too me last resort also cannot to rude. There is always a saying customer is always right althought that is not always true but some how you must bare in mind that they pay you for your perfromance and if VIP is in view I prefer to joke around and have some fun.. Make your spec happy and they won't be a heckler to you most of the time but some are a real pain and you really feel like making then disappear. lol.. I love to work with kids they are fun but naughty hahaha.. But its a wonderful experience when I work with kids.. If you have any chance work with kids here is a little advice, treat kids like kids not adult.. Not too much cards tricks in kids show. Do more visual tricks.. And try to make kids laugh alot and participate in your perfromance.. they will love you for it lol.. and do prepare gifts for them too..

Well i think i make a little mistake here, the rude part is for Street Magic, not Parlour/Hopping, anything that is paid should be use with jokes and no rudeness involved. Sorry guys, thanks for correcting ^_^

illusionist - November 5, 2004 05:01 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. Street Magic I usually pick my spec so hmm the rude case should also not happen unless you doing magic for a dunk guy and he vomited all over your body lol then I think I will scream at him lol.. Normally doing street magic you have to choose and hand pick your spec well so you won't get heckler lol but in most case there will be some and you can joke your way out.. Eg some one shout from the crowd say hey I seen this trick and I know how to do it.. Waht I will add is Wow.. You really seen this trick and know how to do it.. Hmm why not give him a round of appaulse and he will show you guys the trick.. then I will show another after his..lets put our hand to welcome heckler to the front ..oops wats your name again.. I guess I mistook you for another guy call heckler.. Crap :P

Winder - November 6, 2004 12:45 AM (GMT)
Well you can pick your spec, but usually when people sees crowd, you get the crowd building up and up and you will see some hecklers trying to do this and that. But that joke seem ok to me, haha. Anyone could try out that joke when you are facing a problem with a heckler and like what i wrote, hecklers could be anyone. You will never know till he expose himself, even friends, family members and whomever can be a heckler in disguise.

Just something to add on dealing with hecklers... Came across this tip on the other site.

If you've ended your tricks with a ungimmick deck, give the deck to any of your spec or maybe the heckers as a gift...

That might shut their mouth up forever... :P
