Kazekage - April 20, 2006 01:11 PM (GMT)
Loved it!
The best for today's episode in my opinion is the thru' window at the club. :g:
lumpy - April 20, 2006 01:48 PM (GMT)
Cyril's the best! But I didn't like the very first part and the fact tt its only half and hour... <_<
Mabas - April 20, 2006 01:54 PM (GMT)
The last effect was cool. The part where that Rico Magician entered the club.
The starting was cool, the one with the 4 magician gamblers. Liked the way they visually changed the card.
It was cool!!!
We should start our own hidden magic show. That will be awsome. Ha.
I'm to crazy now. The show was good.
Aloy - April 20, 2006 02:34 PM (GMT)
Lisa is HOT
I wondered what happened to them. They seems to have disappeared from the tv magic scene.

Anyone know of a repeat?
vin87 - April 20, 2006 03:27 PM (GMT)
man.. i missed it too. =( cant find it on youtube.. sucks.
Ning - April 20, 2006 04:01 PM (GMT)
So who's your fave magician? ^_^
Cyril is sooooooooo cool
Kazekage - April 20, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
Cyril, without a doubt.
Though we dont get much of him from the T.H.E.M series
Doublelifter - April 20, 2006 04:57 PM (GMT)
I feel the camera work did not do justice to the magicians and their
performance. There seems to be a disconnect between the camera work
and the performance, so much so there is no build-up of tension and then
leading to the climax. Criss Angels Mindfreak is much better in terms of
camera work and build-up. Let's hope the subsequent series comes with
better camera work.

cyril is the coolest, I presume..
but then again, no one has had that much tv appearance than him..
Though most of his televised specials were on japanese tv variety shows, the propagation of those clips on the internet to the rest of the world far surpasses anyone else, I suppose..
I still remember my first time seeing his hamburger effect and water refilling effect..
blew my mind..
His definitive effect, in my opinion, should be the salt shaker thru glass table....
Though relatively similar to Blaine's hand thru glass panel at retail shop, Cyril's glass top effect still get my top ratings...
On the topic of making magic videos [ effects only ] , it sounds like a good idea...
perhaps, smc can organise a mass contribution of clips [ via youtube or some other free file servers ] and do some form of voting and compile the top rated videos and sell it... the $$ made will perhaps go into charity or upkeep of website..
Just a suggestion..
a bit :off: if I may say so myself before getting warnings from mods.
hehe :!!:

Oh well, I think if you search hard enough in youtube, you can find today's episode. :) Have seen it there about 2 weeks ago... :P
Paradoxt - April 27, 2006 01:37 PM (GMT)
I missed it too! Slept passed it. :(
Aloy - April 27, 2006 01:40 PM (GMT)
We should appoint someone in here to remind all forumites whenever there's magic on TV. :ph43r:
yaz - April 27, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)
Seems I wasn't the only one who missed today's episode. I fell asleep and wanted to wake up at 8.30 to watch but woke up at 9.30 instead. It's pretty hard to find their episodes on youtube though... trust me, I tried.
<Aaron> - April 27, 2006 02:46 PM (GMT)

Is it really that difficult? I tried to search again, and I believe that this is today's episode:
T.H.E.M :). More than 20mins of magic without commercials.
You can also find the effects from the last episode though, but they are in smaller pieces.
Hope that it is alright to post links? ;)
yaz - April 27, 2006 04:33 PM (GMT)
Oh wow. Pardon me. I must be getting tired or something. Thanks for the link!
Ning - April 27, 2006 04:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the link Oldman... :) Missed the episode cos I was with Bob Chua at Rasa Sentosa. He was doing a magic walkaround for a company event. He's still my favourite Singaporean magician of all time ^_^ If any of you are free this weekend, catch him at Downtown East this Sunday!
Oh yeah, Paradox, who's Inspector Acai ???
Aloy - April 27, 2006 05:16 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the link. Interesting show today but I dunno why I keep feeling the effects they did for the specs and the effect they did for the camera is different.
Anyways, still nothing from Cyril yet.
yaz - April 27, 2006 06:15 PM (GMT)
Last week Cyril did his err... head falling routine :D. I have always enjoyed that. Cyril's so handsome. Ohoh... that sounded gay. Lisa's not that hot though... looks a little too chubby. Let's hope Cyril will perform next week.
LarryDK - April 27, 2006 07:18 PM (GMT)
Hmm, ever wonder how they got together?
So cool..

nyx - April 28, 2006 02:05 AM (GMT)
Well, i always try to record magic shows though i missed Criss's Mind Freak. I caught 2 episodes of THEM in my com. =)
AcT - April 28, 2006 09:44 AM (GMT)
what time will bob chua be going to downtown east this sunday? if i free will go there take a look. :D
dimsumdemon - April 28, 2006 03:27 PM (GMT)
I though T.H.E.M has been out for very long....and they haven't done anything since then.....??
" are you one of THEM??" - best quote.... -____-
we can also use our own... .... like...call our magic team "Unite Singapore" or " Ultra Singapore"... then we can use the line:
"are you one of US??" "one of US???!!"
lolx...
ok...im lame... :off:
Maddened - April 28, 2006 03:50 PM (GMT)
Cyril also performed the bottle cap through bottle (this sounds so dumb) in the first episode. Slammed it into the bottom of the bottle. Nice effect considering that the cap is bigger than the bottle opening.
That "I'm one of THEM" line is getting really old really fast though. <_<
yaz - April 28, 2006 04:10 PM (GMT)
I can't agree on it getting too old too fast. Some people still say, "huh? Them? What's that?"
I've always wanted to see this kind of concept of hidden magic. It can be so entertaining.
Ning - April 28, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)
I don't know... after watching the eps for abit, I can't help but feel everything's all so stoogy. Don't you think? Didn't quite hit the mark... but it's a cool effort anyhow. If only they had more convincing actors playing the people who got punk'd
Mr. Bob Chua will be performing this Sunday at Downtown East for a whopping 5 hours ^_^ He'll be coming in to post the details in awhile... Do drop by. This time... It's for kids, though he's a good all rounder.
Enjoy the weekend you guys ;)
Ningy: Just had a jolly good poi session!
Aloy - April 28, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
Mr Bob Chua has posted the details of his performance this weekend but I have split it into a new thread in Events and Meetings so that more people will know about it. You can find it
here.

I meant it's getting old for the TV audience. After hearing them (no pun intended) going "I'm/We're/She's/He's one of THEM" for the 15th time in less than half an hour, I just feel like changing the channel...
I think the idea with these shows is not the magic really but the reactions of the people. I just got my Art of Astonishment (thanks a million bigbadwolf! They're wonderful!!) and I can't help but feel that the THEM show is exactly what Paul Harris is talking about when he says that astonishment is our natural state of mind.
For the old-school Copperfield TV specials (add Lance Burton and gang into the mix), the focus is on the performer, his tricks and presentation, the staging etc. I think (and I may be wrong) the new "wave" of TV magic started with Blaine, where the focus shifted from the performer to the stooge... I mean spectator. Most of the time what we are led to see is not the effect of the magic, but the reactions of the public (along with the bleeps). And it is those reactions that actually make the magic of the performer seem... magic. It enhances the effect in our (TV audience) minds to see the person on the street absolutely blown away.
Best example, I saw this clip of Blaine (and I like that guy, so don't think I'm dissing him) flicking two cards back and forth his held-apart hands, saying how magicians can interchange two cards with this technique. Then he says he's going to do it so fast that it's invisible. He proceeded to DL the cards and pretended to have done that flicking motion. The guys watching couldn't believe their eyes and stood stunned for a minute before running around like headless chickens screaming and whooping and going "bleep bleep bleep". If I had seen the same thing as an trailer video from Oz Pearlman on Penguin, I'll probably go, "Yeah cool." But thanks to the screaming-like-headless-chicken people, the effect suddenly gained a whole new dimension of amazement.
So I guess my point is that, the stooginess of these shows are part of the show, since the idea is to let the lay TV audience get amazed by having the reactions of the "live" audience in the show rub off on the TV audience. My dad's an avid fan of Criss Angel and he swears Criss has demonic powers. My attempts to tell him otherwise have so far failed miserably. I guess as magicians, we judge these specials differently, and forget they're made for the general public, who are pretty uneducated about magic and the presentation of magic.
To pull off a good trick = Techical excellence.
To pull off a good trick and make everyone think you're the devil = MAGIC.
(Sorry for the long post. It's a job hazard from writing long essays in school. If it's too garishly long, edit as you wish. Thanks!)
