Description: Split Topic

Bob Chua - April 28, 2006 05:02 PM (GMT)
Hi SMC

I will be performing strolling magic at Downtown East this Sunday 30 Apr 2006 from 1100 - 1730 hrs.

Do drop by and say hello.

Bob Chua

We definitely will.

Thanks for the heads up.

Uh... Why all the events all fall just before my test... Have to skip this one again. :(

Thanks to Ning and Edwin for coming by to say hello.

During my performance last Sunday at Downtown East, I met this young man with his group of friends and as I was entertaining the rest of the crowd, he was doing a running commentary out loud of what I am doing to his friends and saying that he can do this and that. I did not stop him because not to embaress him in the public.

If he happens to read this message, I would ask him to give up the art of magic and become a full time heckler. He has shown no respect for fellow magicians.

During my course of work, I have always meet hecklers which I feel is normal, but coming from a person who can name the trick like "Professor's Nightmare & Three Card Monte" is disgusting.

I also hope that if he will to perform someday; (whom I don't think he is capable) someone will do the same as he had done to me and I wish him well.

I can totally understand how you feel. In fact deciding not to hit back on him was the best option. Many atimes such people are those with insecure personalities. They demand attention and the best way they can do so is 'showing off' to their friends that they KNOW certain stuff which the majority ie. laymen don't. It is definitely without a shadow of a doubt that such people possess the lowest level of maturity and we should instead feel sorry for their insolence.

I meet such people everyday too and what do I normally do in such circumstances? If they are of a slightly older age group, tell them politely that it is rude and allow them to know you want to be respected for what you are doing. If they are just young teenage punks out to spoil your day, show them James Coat's appearing bird trick. That will shut them up :)

Sigh. I missed the occassion. Downtown East is too far away from my home, and my wife was down with high fever, at 39 degree. :(

I am totally disgusted with the behaviour of the heckler. I have not seen one that is this rude in real life (Thank goodness that I do more dramas on stage instead). I'd like to help as an audience by walking quietly to him, and ask him respect himself, and others.

Not sure if I will be wacked instead. :P

I sincerely hope this person is not from SMC, because heckling a professional magician doing his job is more than enough reason to ban this person permanently from the forums and our activities. <_<

Chances are, since he knows the effects by name, this person is probably one of those from the exposure sites/forums, like that Shannon/[A]lex guy. <_< (Or maybe that's HIM :ph43r:)

I'm going to risk sounding like a nag by repeating my "non-exposure mantra".
The problem with those exposure forums/sites is not just they give out secrets to the public. It is the kind of attitude they innoculate into their users. They give their users a total disrespect for magic and fellow magicians, and the delusion that if they know how something is done, they are as good as the performer.

Anyways, this person is probably never going to have hecklers problems, because such people are seldom good enough themselves to do anything.

If anyone knows who this person is or know that he is in our forums, send me or any mod a little confidential PM. ;) B) We will make him famous. :ph43r:

Thanks to Markiebeth, Oldman and Aloy for your comments and I hope this will be a lesson for those newbies in this forum that it is so important to respect fellow magicians and not to become a professional heckler.

By proper behaviour, you gain a friend instead of an enemy.

The problem with hecklers and maybe some newly initiated magicians is probably the ego issue... While its a thrill for them to figure out how things are done and attempt impressing the people around them to 'show off', if roles were reversed, they'd definately feel the heat and would not at all appreciate it.

I think it is very important to respect each other. You can always 'hao lian' AFTER, not while the performer is doing their routine. Still, I enjoyed myself yesterday watching Uncle Bob do his strolling magic. He is certainly a veteran in the art... it was amazing to see how he easily handles hecklers and difficult crowds. At one time, there were more than 20 over people looking at what he was doing!!! Still, he wasn't afriad of anyone standing behind him or being a smart aleck ;)

I've done strolling performances before, and also seen how other perform. Still, no one has quite captured a captive audience like Bob Chua... Truly respect the man! ^_^

aloy, i was thinking along the same line as you. though i was more towards [A]lex, not shannon. are you talking about the shannon from SJI?

anyway, luckily uncle bob seems like a nice man. if i were him, i would probably blow up a balloon, sculpt it and shove it up his nose. the thing is i don't know balloon scuplting. :P
