This robbery foiling thing by DC got me all fired up... So I'm curious who are your idols or Heroes of Might and Magic!! (excuse the poor pun)
To make this a more fruitful thread than just listing names, give your reasons why, and not just "cos he damn cool..." or "cos he damn good...". B)
My own list (in no particular order):
1) Copperfield - His showmanship is just awesome. I list his Chinese Origami Box illusion as the prime example of how he can turn the simplest trick into a magical event worthy of headlining a show. He's the only guy who can actually affect me emotionally with his stuff, and the only guy to make me think that magic can possibly be real. I'm on my knees to this guy.
2) Jay Sankey - He's bald[ing], chubby, bespectacled, short, but does he grab your attention or what. Best comedic magician in my opinion, without getting too over the top (thinking of Rudy Cody and Amazing Jonathan here, not that they're bad, but I just prefer less-dramatic humour). Plus he gives me hope that average-looking chaps can be popular and famous too.
3) Derren Brown - Like what the heck!? 10 minutes with this guy and I'll believe he can move mountains with his mind... or make a whole auditorium's spectators start digging up the mountains for him. Showmanship second to DC. Respect....
4) James Randi - Right, not so much a magician now, but his mind is one sharp tool. His critical thinking skills and scientific enquires are something I admire and respect. Plus he's fighting the good fight of educating people about frauds who claim to have real powers and what not. Uri Gellar? Pshaw!
That's all I can think of now. Others I appreciate would be Penn & Teller (poor Teller), Mike Ammar, Banachek, Jeff McBride, Max Maven, and generally any good cardician. Heh...
Oh yes, almost forgot:
Special mention goes to J.C. Sum. Years back, when I first started getting interested, I met up with him a couple of time (this was before his stage show got on the road). The man was sooo generous, helpful, and friendly! He taught me quite a few tricks off his own repertoire, taught me his own way to do DL, and imparted so much other stuff to me...
Unfortunately, after life caught up and I dropped off the hobby for a while, I have since forgotten most of the stuff he taught me, except for this one rubberband trick. He's a damn cool guy... Wish I could meet him again to thank him and "jam" with him. :)
He's probably forgotten about me, but if anyone here knows the guy, help me say a word of thanks to him. From some strange kid he met a couple of times at the Burger King in Marina and inspired. :g:
Chris korn- Funny guy, i like his long thin fingers haha, looks funny combined with cards and coins.
Jay Sankey- Another funny fella, this tricks are dead straght to the point.
Penn & Teller- Oh i love them, again, funny and because the let Slash play on one of their show!!
Richard Osterlind- For creating BTC.
Oh yeh and last but not least, my grandfather, he likes to perform small tricks like vanishing a hankey / coin and stuff like that.
