Title: Invention?
Description: You came up with a routine b4?

Just a question for you guys...

Anybody here had invented his own routine or tricks?

I've heard that beside performance, the next level of magic is in invention. To be able to have a trick that you can called your own.

I had "tried" to come up with something, but so far my creativity is lacking. Just wonder have you guys came up with anything before?

I think most people here do have their own routines.

For me it would start with an effect and objective that you want to achieve. Then you start to make use of your knowledge in magic to achieve the effect you want.

I created my first routine for my girlfriend. It was Valentines Day and I wanted to show her something that i created just for her.
Now i perform it to any pretty girls just for fun :P

Wow, really? How was the effect like?

Hmm.. So if I found a different way to reveal a thought-of card, can that be consider a "new routine"? Or I find a new method for a classic trick (with same effct but maybe easier handling)?

Anyway, to make my question clearer: had anybody invented their own tricks before (eg. Daniel Garcia came up with Ego, Wayne Houchin came up with Sinful.. etc)? Or maybe moves (eg. Bobo Switch, Vernon Load..)?

I am quite curious about the thought process of you all guys as I am not that creative a magician yet.

u may want to pick up create your own magic by jay sankey though i dont know how good it is.however what i do know is that before you invent any effects, you must dare to think of any EFFECt u want to create not considering the fact of whether it seems impossible or not, only later do you explore methods to achieve your aim

The effect? If you are a girl then i show you haha! :P

I'm not that good to invent things like Sinful or Ego. -_-

I just put the stuff i learn and try to create something new based on them. I'm now working on an effect like sinful. Its just an example of how i put things i learnt together and achieve an effect i wanted.

The coin is put on top of the can. With a wave of hands you hear a "clank!" then the coin vanished (short sleeve) started shaking the can you can hear something.... the sound of a coin inside the can. You pass the can to the audience and let him shake it. He too can feel something inside. The audience then opened the can( thats right they opened the can not you) and they found their coin trapped inside. Its impossible to get the coin out as the opening is too small. They cut open the can there is their coin.
Still working on how to do this with a signed coin.

If you play with cards a lot you can usually come up with a lot of weird stuff. However, most of them are either invented already or weren't ( with good reason). But once in a while you come up with something thats good, like an original pass or control or DL that you can call your own, and incorporate it into your own routine i.e an original version of Triumph.

But if your talking more abt coming up with completely new routines and completely new handling for them then that'll take effort, patience and insight on your part.

I did come up with something a while back. Its a centre to bottom control that uses the actions of the Erdnase bottom p**m ( using the pinky ) that I learned from Ninja 2.

Inventing is extremely fun. I personally invent quite a few effects for myself. I am hoping one day I would be able to perform effects only of my own.

To me, its not too important if it must be 100% original, unless you want to market it. If you are at the stage where you are simply inventing stuff for your use, then don't be too caught up with inventing original or extremely impressive stuff. When I started out, I invented crap as well. Now, I still invent crap. :) but better crap.

Just remember this theory when inventing: You try to invent one good trick and you take half a year to do it. In the process, you cancel away a million ideas that you thought were bad. That's really sad, isn't it? You might as well take in your million ideas, build them up into presentable tricks, and you have a million decent tricks. And because you have a million, some are bound to be good or at least better. When you progress and get better at magic, these million ideas become VERY useful.

Always think MORE before QUALITY when starting out.

Inventing a BRAND NEW trick is tough.. But putting together diff ideas.. modifying current tricks to suit ya style and outting them to form ya own routine is much recommended..
