Title: Focus Or Diversify?

Somebody once told me: "It's better to know 10 tricks than to know 100 tricks..."

He was referring to people who are always after the next "killer" trick w/o perfecting the tricks they already know. For him, even though he know more than a 100 (I guess), he always concentrate on only 10 killer tricks that he's very good at.

He also mentioned that we should focus on what genre of magician we want to be. Concentrate on being a Card Man, a Coin Man or a Mentalist and not try to be everything.

What do you think?

Diversify first. Know where your strength and interest lie at. Then focus.

You should focus 70 to 80% of your effort on one genre, and the remaining to focus on everything else.

I wanted to be a card man 100%, and soon realised people started asking me if I knew anything else besides my cards. That got me stumped very badly. That's becuase the definition of a magician is not someone who can do amazing things with a specific kind of object. You are supposed to do amazing stuff with anything and everything.

So yeah, you focus on one to be good at it, but still, you need to diversify a little bit to ensure your butt is saved in difficult situations. Of course, you don't just diversify to save your butt, but it is always good to know that you have a lot more than just a deck of cards up your sleeve.
