kyo - November 12, 2004 11:35 AM (GMT)
hey guys. i juz came across this forum and gt really interested in it.
i wish to learn card tricks too. but i stumbled arcoss too many bogus tricks or tricks that requires alot of practice and quick hands
maybe i am askin the impossible but is there any chance that there are tricks which doesn't require trick decks nor lots of practices but have the effect of stunning the audience. ???
i don't know the rules here so correct me if i were to have said something wrong.
thanks
kyo - November 12, 2004 11:40 AM (GMT)
it seems that cards tricks are not meant to be discussed openly here.
but can anyone give any guides to tricks which are simple?. just wish to impress friends durin chalets and stuff
Winder - November 12, 2004 11:45 AM (GMT)
well kyo i am so sorry to say this, PRACTICE will only make your performance better, improvement need to be made to yourself too.
Thats what The Art of Magic is all about. Practice, Practice and Practice, after that Improvement, Improvement and more Improvement.
Thats all i can say, if you are a newbie, i wouldn't advise you to go for too diffcult materials, just go for simple SELF WORKING card effects.
Afterall just a reminder, magic isn't just about cards. There are alot of materials to study in magic ranging from "Coins, Rubber band, Mentalism, Cards, Stage, Parlour and so on..."
We do not do ANY Exposure here, we are just here to interact with each other and some of the senior and much more experience magician will just guide you and correct you.
Winder - November 12, 2004 11:50 AM (GMT)
Since you just wanna impress your friends during chalet, try not to stuff yourself with advanced materials cause most of them need practice and practice.

Self-working close upThis 2 material for Self working card magic should be enough. If you wish to learn more and so on. Try Royal Road to Card Magic, it contains lots of infomation which are useful for any new magicians.
Lastly, May the magic be with you ^_^

thanks for your reply.
and i totally understand the pratice part.
do you have any websites or articles as to how i can start doing card tricks in short amount of time?
and i do understand that there are alot of other tricks but i wish to concentrate on regular decks as it is most conviently found everywhere

Winder - November 12, 2004 11:56 AM (GMT)
For decks i would recommend the most commonly used by all magicians:
Bicycle Deck (Riders Back)
I would also recommend you to use:
Aladdin Deck (Air Cushioned)
Aladdin Deck (Non Air cushioned)
I wouldn't really suggest Bee deck due to no borders and there are some effects which will not go well with Bee. But Bee Quality is good enough and it looks good for manipulation.
Decks:
Bicycle Deck (Riders Back) (Red or Blue)
Aladdin Deck (Air Cushioned) (Blue)
Aladdin Deck (Non Air Cushioned) (Blue or Red)
Bee's Deck (Blue or Red)
Well i don't think you will have ample time to learn an effect as there aren't many online materials out there.
kyo - November 12, 2004 12:03 PM (GMT)
i don;t really think that it is the type of decks i should be concentratin on on.
i can't even get a trick right now. :(
Winder - November 12, 2004 12:08 PM (GMT)
Well, i think you should also post an Introduction of yourself in the Intros and Hellos Section :).
When is the performance and what kind of materials do you need ? Self working or those with sleight of hands (Practice) ?
kyo - November 12, 2004 12:11 PM (GMT)
self working?.. i don't wish to do preparation before that . is there any tricks like that?
Winder - November 12, 2004 12:14 PM (GMT)
Well self working effect do have some preparation, but i am not very sure of which self working effect. I don't do self working effect any more, why not you try doing some search on the web or so.
kyo - November 12, 2004 12:17 PM (GMT)
i did quite some search on the net already. and the tricks kind of turn out to be rather similar. and their method of doing the tricks aren't really idiot proof
Winder - November 12, 2004 12:24 PM (GMT)
well then make it totally idiot proof or find some other materials on the net that aren't soooo idiot proof. You are the 1 who know how to do it so you might find it's not idiot proof cause it's too easy, but your friends mightn't. Just do some research ~

kyo ur seemingly looking for a easy way out.
If u dun wish to put in time effort and not forgetting money.
ur prolly stuck to juz a limited amt of tricks.
All tricks depends on one's presentations.
The method may be obvious to u and u think its dumb
That's becos u know. Others dun.

Hahaha your right man ~ Dude ~ Pal ~
Whether is it a simple effect or so, as long you did a good presentation and performance, i believe you will get the applause too.

Welcome to the forum kyo, perhaps you would like to post a little introduction of yourself in the Hellos and Intro Section?
I'm glad that you have taken an interest in magic. Magic is probably not as difficult as you imagine it to be, but not as easy as you would like it to be either.
That may sound a bit confusing... :)
There are tricks that are self working, i.e. no "technical" skills required. And a lot of these can be performed impromptu with a borrowed deck of cards under any circumstances. Personally, i really enjoy using these effects (that's what magicians call them) because they give me more room to play and concentrate with the presentation, but probably because I'm lazy. These are easy to learn for a beginner but it doesn't mean you dun need to practise them. You DO. It may not sound very convincing now but you will get it after you screw it up a few times and have a lot of people laughing at you. B)
The resources Winder recommended are pretty good. You should check it out if you are really interested. Other than these internet sites, you can also get the books from some of the magic dealers in SG. Or you can get it from the dealers that hangs around this forum, they usually have it cheaper.
Good luck and have fun.

All of us have been down your road before. We started with easy tricks and always trying to find opportunities to impress friends.
You'll want to do it to impress friends as often as you can but the least you can do to respect this art is to practice till you get it right before presenting it. There are some idoit proof effects out there but you'll still need practice.
Before you really want to go further into magic, ask yourself this question, would you be willing to practice a single effect for 2 weeks or even a sleight for 3 months before showing your friends? Most of us do it the hard way, you probably won't find an easy way.
Another thing you might want to know is, we spent LOTS of money on magic. That's why we're always broke :(
kyo - November 12, 2004 11:44 PM (GMT)
hey guys. thanks for all of your reply.
f.y.i. i believe i have alot of time as my o levels for ending and most likely i will be attending alot of chalets thats why i wanted an 'easy way out' not because i am lazy.
i don't mind doing it the hard way but every good and presentatable tricks seems to carry a cost which is impossible for me as i m not a working adult like some of you here.
Nevertheless. i really appericiate your help. thanks

Com'on guys, give this guy a break...
i have to admit, I (or most of us?) came into magic with the thought of picking up a few cheapskat, easy tricks to impress ppl...i'm such one, it was only till later part did i realise the "meaning" behind magic...
so, kyo,
There are some really good card sites out there for doing some simple tricks...
and yes, they are FOC...google it...
and even though we teach you how to perform the tricks, and u noe how to perform, but what i guess u need is to polish up is the presentation skills...
magic = everyone can learn+perform, but presentation will be a greater assert...

Since your o's is ending, we have an outing on the 19 november 2004 (Friday) 6:30pm at Youth Park Coffee House.
kyo - November 13, 2004 02:21 AM (GMT)
cool. but what do i do there since i don't know a single trick
Winder - November 13, 2004 02:26 AM (GMT)
Well we still have 6 more days to go, currently you could get some materials. Simple stuff that could get you into simple card magic first.
Secondly it would be a Singapore Magic Circle Forum Outing, so as long you are in this forum. You are invited :) just try to do some research and get some effect, practice them as hard as you can so that you would know them by heart.
kyo - November 13, 2004 02:30 AM (GMT)
haha. i doubt that is possible
anyway. is there any stores which actually sells those videos?. instead od purchasing them online?. i kind of want to learn the torn and restored trick the impro. way. like with the sugar packets and stuff ( like when you tear and empty a packet and seal it back )
magi81 - November 13, 2004 02:30 AM (GMT)
Sadly, i can't join you guys.."again"...
now, i'm still in my company, struck doing some work....
just catching a breath here for now....
Winder - November 13, 2004 02:35 AM (GMT)
Those effect needs setup and some preparation, wouldn't suggest you to learn those stuff for a beginners, therefore, those stuff need some practice too.
So sad magi81 :( need me to speak to your boss :X :P
kyo - November 13, 2004 02:45 AM (GMT)
oh. so torn and restore tricks can only be done by pros.?
can i like purchase the video and learn?.
Winder - November 13, 2004 02:52 AM (GMT)
not say pros, is that it need longer time to practice and there's a setup involved.
But if you want, you can try to get some manual script out in the market or some dvds.
kyo - November 13, 2004 02:53 AM (GMT)
where do i purchase them?.
i live in the east so perferably u can tell me about shops which sell those stuff here?
Winder - November 13, 2004 02:59 AM (GMT)
Hmm... Which part of the east do you live in ?

No need to know tricks lah hahhaha thats apply to me only for this outing hahahaha.. just relax go there and you may get to learn something.. :D
Aloy - November 13, 2004 03:53 AM (GMT)
Hah....dun listen to illusionist Kyo, it's not that scary...
If you DO know a few tricks, it would be great if you show us during the outing. So that we can learn from each other :)
However if you completely dunno anything, you are still very welcome to come for the outing.
Just dun expect to be taught everything and dun sulk if someone dun tell you "how it's done". B) But to say the least, you'd have a good and entertaining time, and if you are lucky, someone MIGHT teach you something ;)
Here's a challenge: If you can do the Coin Roll reasonably by the time of the outing, it will be more convincing to us that you are really interested. So there you go... ;)
Winder - November 13, 2004 03:58 AM (GMT)
Hahaha.... it's always good to know more people, to make more friends. Who knows i can have some stooge in the audience next time round, haha ~
