Title: Gician Novelties
Description: Singapore Magic Makers?

Aloy - November 13, 2004 04:40 AM (GMT)
Does anyone know anything about this Gician Novelties? They produce those juvenile looking packet tricks that you can sometimes see at department stores and gift shops that has been around for a long time. Recently i went to a gift shop and saw that they have a pen thru bill for $9.90, produced and packaged by this Gician Novelties.
I nearly cried.

And i saw that they have a sg 20 cents version of Dynamic Coins for $12. And a Himber Wallet for $10.

Then i cried.
And I bought one of each.

Both items are of reasonable quality, but it's not hard to see that it's slightly inferior from the original. What surprises me most is when i open up the instructions, it seems to be produced by a local company as opposed to some indian company which was what i was expecting it to be.
The email addressed given is gician@magix.com.sg and the copyright details named G.Concept and Design Pte Ltd, copyrighted 2003. The 2 cartoon characters in the instruction call themselves Gician Tan and John Liew. Their products are available in a lot of toys department and gift shops.

Anybody know more about these people?
And forget about performing pen thru bill in sg now. B)

May i know where can i get them Morphine ? Would like to take a look at those packet stuff ~.

Aloy - November 13, 2004 05:39 AM (GMT)
They are everywhere, most dept stores toys section or novelty/gift shops.
I've bought some of these packet tricks before when i was in pri sch so they go back a LONG time. But it used to be very juvenile tricks like rope thru ring and 21 card trick or the ball in egg holder etc etc. Basic stuff you find in children's magic kit at toys shops. But now they seems to be moving it 1 notch up.

They also make gags and jokes like plastic shit and stink bombs and itching powder etc etc.

brokenvow - November 13, 2004 05:50 AM (GMT)
oh boy, pen thru dollar sold in toy sections?!
Interesting, i think i'll make a trip down to check it out.
Haha, i still remember those gags, i bought the plastic shit and Fart Gas and Balloon when i was a kid.
Didn't buy the 'Magic' series coz i thought they looked so fake.

Gician have sold the stuff since last christmas. There's another one at Bedok North at $1.00 store they sold magic tricks for $1.00 such as stripper deck, rope tricks, pocket tricks and others. Small Illussion tricks for $2.00. ormally sell for $3.90 to $6.00 at books store. I practically bought everything to give for christmas present. But I heard the owner of the shop will import some more. But don't ask about quality I bought just to give some kids to be interested in magic.

Which part of Bedok North?

Gician himself is a magicain but is concentrating on novelties shops now. He use to produce thess magic tricks long time ago but stop for some time. He's back again.
He excel in sleight of hand magic.

Some of the things he made is similar to Tenyo. Besides his stuff, this month Fantasma is also launching their magic product in Toys R Us. Expect more strippers, more svengalis and more marked deck.

Mystical2004 - November 13, 2004 11:35 AM (GMT)
wow... hard to imagine little kids doing effects using those decks...

zinally - November 13, 2004 01:23 PM (GMT)
I just when to the shop just now and the item all has been sold out if they are a new item I will post it here.

Still thinking ways to present the trick. Heh...

iamthewalrus - December 9, 2004 04:33 PM (GMT)
Well yeah. They've been making and selling magic and novelties since the early 90's, maybe earlier. Pen through bill, Morphine? Sounds familiar, I bought pencil through bill (Misled) long time ago from some Marine Parade store before. I was whining somewhere else about that. I think Bedok South also has a store that stocks his stuff. Since I was something like a customer of their packet tricks and toys (they have fake insects, lizards and fart too I think. Don't think I ever bought those.) it means that magic has entered the heartlands way before Blaine did. Really it did. And it's back. Baaaaaaack!

You are correct. It was way before that when Gician first came up with his little miracle packets.

I bought my first "Misled" gimmick back somewhere around 1987.

RH, if you're thinking of buying the TT, don't. I know it's cheap but I doubt it'll function well.

For starters, it's hard and plasticky and you can even see the lines along the edge (the lines are formed by injection moulding of the plastic). And it's like orangy in colour and looks totally unnatural.

SeNgHoE - December 9, 2004 11:24 PM (GMT)
i bought some stuff from 7 eleven shops that were from gician, A VANISHING cARD BOX . But the quality not htat good.. B)

Is it easy to make one if the original is spoilt? I may consider getting it. Hell, it's cheap, anyway.

heartsofclubs - December 10, 2004 12:52 PM (GMT)
Their items are cheap yet so close to the original. I do recommend some of their items.. Unless of course you're one who hates piracy of high quality products.. hehe..

zinally - December 11, 2004 01:46 AM (GMT)
the problem with gician he never tell u about the product from especially the ori maker or the idea from. Just like buying pirated product.. :ph43r:

ReDeFiNe - December 30, 2004 02:36 AM (GMT)
hey i personally thinks that these Gician products are fantastic...no doubt they are attained from cheap sources from China etc , but come to think about it its is these POW tricks that many of local professional magicians got started in magic...when i was young..i know nothing about PRO shops so i would just buy 3 - 4 packets of pow tricks of the shelves....some memorable ones are like linking rings, TT and multiplying balls and i remembered a himber wallet that has a hard backing...hahaha...Gician is a good business man , respect him for that! He use to run a PRO SHOP and he runs it well...

In a nut shell, i feel that there are some limitations towards effects put up commercially on the shelves available to the laymen....after all if the laymen wants to buy something that PRO MAGICIAN uses..Magic Shops are not hard to find.... The marked ,stripper and svengali has been classic of commercial magic toys... maybe the newer modern toys are like pen true anything and ring and rope etc...

Cheers to Gician!

GordonLi - December 30, 2004 05:38 AM (GMT)
gician has an edge over other magic dealers cos whether on variety or price, he wins both. some of the stuff he sells are hard to find elsewhere, and his stuff are cheap. i believe in business, its either u sell something diff from competitors, or end up in a price war.

Ning - January 20, 2005 02:48 AM (GMT)
Went to have my bridesmaid dress tailored last weekend & came across this shop @ Junction 8 called GIFT A NAME... it retails many of Gician's things (not sure if he owns it???) like his affordable magic items (mainly packet tricks and pranks/ gaffs) as well as, items like Christian jewelry & crucifix keychains (bought some for my girlfriends who go to church).

And apparently, this shop has several branches... one even in the heart town! ^_^

Magicdow - January 20, 2005 02:51 AM (GMT)
He's the boss of this chain. If you come across his himber wallet, get it. Its good and cheap, only $9.90.

Ning - January 20, 2005 03:01 AM (GMT)
I see! That's what I assumed... Thanks for the info Magicdow! ;)

By the way, what other things would you recommend? ^_^

Magicdow - January 20, 2005 03:06 AM (GMT)
I don't really own a lot of his stuff. The dice trick is not bad. Neck cracker is a good gag.

LOL... yeah! Cynwell has it... sounds really realistic  I'm quite impressed with his strong marketing efforts... he's even hit places like 7-11??? Wow!

MagicalPam - January 20, 2005 06:01 AM (GMT)
Yes , you are right, more and more magic tricks are now sold very easily and for very cheap, what can we do .... ?
I have performed in front of a group of friend, and before even I start, someone asked me a question.," Is it a striper deck ? I have bought striper deck for 2$..."
My cards was not gimmicked, so I just let him examine ...
Lesson 1 : if you want to perform something with gimmick, always start with ungimmicked version, when you start to gain some credibility and they don't questione you anymore, you could change with the gimmick ....if you want ...

Lesson 2 : Update yourself with what is available for the public (toys shop, cheap stores, TV shows ...etc), dont perform them or change the method ....

GordonLi - January 20, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
agreed. now my friends dun even suspect me using a gimmicked deck even if i am (although i still usually dont). :)

Winder - January 20, 2005 03:52 PM (GMT)
actually all laymen will assume us using special decks, you can ask lloyd during our disability awareness event. Hahahaha ~

Jimmagic - January 20, 2005 04:29 PM (GMT)
Some Gician's product are good. Not to say the POW trick but he does sell item for professional too.

zinally - January 21, 2005 02:03 AM (GMT)
The china magic tricks set at bedok interchange is back. I bought a phycic watch for $2.00 & quite fun to do. Effect u ask a spectator any time that he/she thought most memorable. When he/she mentioned the time, the magician told him he has predicted the time that he/she mentioned. He take out a piece of watch from the cover & the time is exactly the time that he/she mentioned. The watch shows a fix hand & cannot be change or manipulate & it can be inspected. Other trick is at $1.20 to $3.00 located at $1.00 shop near 4D counter.

Magicdow - January 21, 2005 02:19 AM (GMT)
where's the $1 shop located? Near KFC? NTUC? Thanks.

zinally - January 21, 2005 04:09 AM (GMT)
It is at bedok interchange itself- the row of shop facing a cinema/internet cafe shop. It is just at the corner when the bus turn to the interchange from the HDB flat side. I hope u know what I mean.

Magicdow - January 21, 2005 04:21 AM (GMT)
I'll look for it. Thanks.

ren8585 - January 21, 2005 06:14 AM (GMT)

Or...you can buy the gimmicks if they are of good value, wait 5 - 10 years for the product to be phrased out and everyone has but forgotten it, then use it because nobody will recognise it then.
