Title: Tommy Wonder
Description: Passed away

Magicdow - June 27, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
Some of us who met Tommy Wonder in the last convention in Singapore will know him. In fact I'm sure most of us has heard of him.

He has passed away due to lung cancer. Tommy Wonder was a very clever man, this is a great loss for us.

Ning - June 27, 2006 01:35 AM (GMT)
Oh no :( Aloy is gonna be devasted.

I can't believe it magicdow, he looked totally fine & dandy then!

He's a great magician and person. Rest in peace, Mr. Wonder...

[Ling] - June 27, 2006 01:45 AM (GMT)
Gosh.... My condolences.

I was hoping to see him perform again at the next convention or something.... Hiaz.

Rest in Peace, Mister Wonder.

This is saddening... :( :( :(

-- i saw him smoking backstage before the performance last year... no wonder...--

My condolences, once again,
Ling.

May his magic live on.

Aloy - June 27, 2006 01:52 AM (GMT)
No..........I cannot believe this............... This can't be...

Where you got the source for this Bernard?
I've been searching fervently for news of this on google but found nothing.....there's nothing on Tommy Wonder's website too.

Just 2 days ago I just told Ning to help me order his 2nd Book of Wonders becoz I finally read thru his 1st book twice....

yong_tianadeline - June 27, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
I think Magicdow probably saw it on the Magic New Zealand.
I read it on the E-zine sent to me too..

I found the Magic Cafe thread........ :(

Tommy Wonder was one of my biggest magical inspiration. Ning knows how obsessed and awe-struck I am with his philosophies and his thinking when it comes to magic. It's not just his magic and misdirection that I admire, it's his thoughts and theories which elevates magic from just an amazing entertainment, and his efforts to make his magic truly artistic.

When we got a chance to meet him at IF Magic 2005, I wasn't farmiliar with his materials at all. After IF Magic, I got his book to discovered so much more of his great thinking and his magic.
I was kind of kicking myself for not reading his book earlier because then I would have a chance to ask him so many questions about some of his ideas and concepts at IF Magic. And I had been secretly hoping that I would have a chance to meet him again someday which I'm going to try to bribe some answers out of him. But that is not to be. -_-

Tommy Wonder is a true artist of magic. His thoughts on magic goes beyond magic as an entertainment, but magic as a dramatic art.
His routines and effects often extrudes brilliant plots with the most intriguing literary elements of conflict and irony, they are almost poetic. Not just the superfical amusment of a magic trick, but a real depth and layers of artistic creation.
My greatest regret is not knowing his material better earlier and wasting the one time that I got to meet him.

Ning is right. I'm devastated. -_-

Aloy - June 27, 2006 03:20 AM (GMT)
I wonder if his stage act was ever released or passed on?
Or is it lost together with him...

Magicdow - June 27, 2006 05:03 AM (GMT)
I heard the news from a friend and subsequently checked out The Cafe and The Genni.

GordonLi - June 27, 2006 07:52 AM (GMT)
I just found out about it too, and checked back here. This is terrible...

Tommy Wonder inspired me in 2 ways (besides the ingenuity of his effects):
1. The magician can take on impracticalities to make the effect wonderful for his audience.
2. "Fumbling is the signature of amateurism", as he said. How handling should be streamlined.

Well, I have yet to get his books and was even hoping I could see him again... (I have his DVDs though, but there are more materials in the books.)

I think you will love his books.
I remember you getting the Wonder Visions DVD set from him at IF Magic.

When I saw the banner, below our SMC logo, my immediate reaction was, " No way..."

Ouch it hurts.

Dragon - June 27, 2006 09:46 AM (GMT)
Tommy Wonder? My lord. I'm lost for words.

fume - June 27, 2006 09:50 AM (GMT)
Sad news there..

Although i'm not very familiar with his material, but i've heard some good things about Mr. Wonder from Aloy before when he met him at the last IF.

hmm.. :(

Navarrone - June 27, 2006 11:20 AM (GMT)
Sad, really very sad.

This came so sudden, I doubt none of us expected it.

Smoking is BAD! Truly BAD!

This is a post in the magic cafe thread about Tommy Wonder, by Dan LeFay.

"The day before he died I sat at Tommy’s bed at the hospital. Extremely fragile he performed a version of his “unfinished piece”. I was taking notes.
“This”, he said, “is how I would suggest to do it.”
I realized that his illness could not… would never fade out the pride, passion and sincerity he feels for his one true love; the Art of Magic.
If only we could share and feel the smallest bit of it…

To keep my friend alive I’ll keep studying his work. I’ll ponder over his…suggestions. Not blindly copying what he thought was good, but creating my own magic. Hoping I can be as unique a human being and artist as Tommy Wonder is.

I hope, one day we will make you proud Tommy!

Dan LeFay, The Netherlands"

He was still doing magic 1 day before he dies.
Inspiring.
-_-

I'm truly touched by Mr Wonder's love for magic even till his very last moment in this world

Maddened - June 27, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
Oh no. :(

Just when I'm beginning to discover more about him.

HarapanOng - June 27, 2006 01:22 PM (GMT)
Although I am not familiar with his material, I realised that a lot of times he is being referred to when people come inside the forum for help. Thus I know he is one magician to be respected.

My condolences.

dtjk - June 27, 2006 02:38 PM (GMT)
I was doing an effect like Nest of Boxes for Magic Unlimited 2006, and I referred to his Visions of Wonders Volume 3, where Tommy goes really indepth into one of the classics in magic, the Nest of Boxes effect. His presentation, style, ideas and methods are definitely way way out of the box.

That was the first time I seen materials of Tommy Wonder, and I realised that he's super clever and one of the greatest magicians around.

I'm definitely gonna get more of his materials.

Condolences, Mr Wonder.

End of a legacy of Wonder.

May his magic live on through his works.

Doing magic on his deathbed, thats what i call a true magician.

May he rest in peace.

Ning - June 27, 2006 05:23 PM (GMT)
I miss him already... can't believe he's really gone, you know? :(

It's just so wierd when you see him on L&L videos and being so active and everything. Sigh. Takes getting used to, this sinking feeling that one of present day magic's masters has gone beyond....

Thanks for the special Tommy Wonder banner you put up under the SMC logo, Aloy.

Really can't believe he's gone.

Winder - June 28, 2006 06:59 AM (GMT)
My condolences.

I know that this a fact which we must really accept, he's gone but his true love for magic will always remains within us.

I admire his true love for magic like what the other members had already said, even till the day he died, his passion for magic will always live on. It will even live on within us and i believe he want us to continue the spirit of magic.

I was expecting to see him at the next IF, but it seems that this will never happen again. I didn't went for the last IF due to shortage of cash, and i truly regret it now.

Rest In Peace. :(

Winder ~

I believe we will always remember him in our heart and carry on the spirit of magic.

nyx - June 28, 2006 12:59 PM (GMT)
Oh no. Back from overseas and the first thing i see here is bad news.

I'm affected.

My condolences.

Ning - June 29, 2006 06:52 PM (GMT)
For those who need a form of closure, you may post your condolences here at Tommy Wonder's own website.

Honestly... A part of me still can't believe he's not with us anymore. How can it be so. Sigh.

Magicdow - June 30, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
Here's a clip of his performance.

Ning - June 30, 2006 01:52 AM (GMT)
Augh............... *sniff* That was such a great show :(

Winder - June 30, 2006 05:50 AM (GMT)
A Great performance by Tommy Wonder, even i myself can't accept the facts that he's actually gone too. :( I believe he will be well missed by all of us here.

Raoul - July 2, 2006 08:52 AM (GMT)
