Title: Birthday Gift For A Mentalist?

theWeaver - June 28, 2006 06:11 AM (GMT)
Just wondering.. If there is a $80 or so budget, what product would you buy for a mentalist.
Three lists please, gimmicks, books, dvds. (can combine items to make 80++)
Cheers~

How long has he been doing mentalism?
Assuming, he's pretty new (like me) :-

2) Theatre of the Mind - Barrie Richardson
3) Act 2 - Barrie Richardson

DVD

1) Any of the Banachek PSI Series
2) Any of Max Maven's Videomind Series
3) Any Richard Osterlind DVD

Props

1) Beyond ESP 2 (ESP deck)

If it was me... there's only 1 choice and it's Lincoln's Best Boon *drool*

...But wait, that's going to be over your budget I think. Heh...

Jeff Gan - June 28, 2006 07:14 AM (GMT)
I would have named the Stealth Assassin wallet too, but realised its way out of budget.

Sehnsucht - June 28, 2006 09:52 AM (GMT)
is Lincoln's best boon really the best of NW around?? its really getting me interested..

exohordon - June 28, 2006 10:22 AM (GMT)
If you have the extra cash and you're into NW, go for it. Well worth the investment.

Sehnsucht - June 28, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
any dealer for quotes on this Lincoln BB?

Maddened - June 28, 2006 03:51 PM (GMT)
I say get him Darwin Ortiz's "Strong Magic" and Henning Nelms' "Magic and Showmanship". If he's a serious mentalist, these will probably be more useful to him then another book/dvd of effects. And if he isn't new, then he wouldn't really need more effects. Derren Brown uses Annemann's and Corinda's stuff extensively, just with a modern update to presentation and handling.

Another consideration could be Ian Rowland's "The Full Facts of Cold Reading". It's touted as THE bible of cold reading. I have half a mind of getting it myself but at 28 pounds (around S$81), I guess I have to wait till my own birthday and hope some friend would be as kind as you to get me stuff. :g:

*dreams*

theWeaver - June 28, 2006 03:55 PM (GMT)
He's 2-3 years into magic i guess..

The 3 DVD sets Jeff suggested i think he already has..

Hmm.. NW and wallets.. Hmm.. Feels abit too common.. Are there any newer and innovative mentalist stuff that are good? Btw, he's a Derren Brown fan~ Like me.. Hahaha.. Gimmicks that has his effects would be cool i guess.. Hmm.. Wait, i want that for myself it there is! lol.

Edited:
Just after posting did i see Maddened's post. Ah.. I shall look into them.. Hmm.. Sounds cool.. Serious? Hmm.. Well i dont think he is planning to be a pro mentalist and go on stage or anything.. So stagey or big scale, big props stuff are out..

exohordon - June 28, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
Until Lincoln finds a way to mass produce LBB, the only way is to order directly from him.

Buy it off his site... he personally makes each piece lovingly ^_^

And yeah, I've got Ian Rowland's book... it's TOTAL crap, don't get it! :ph43r: :ph43r: :ph43r: I'm joking.

It's so good, I just wanna keep it all to myself. Heh.

Derren Brown fan? Ok steady... Get him either Devil's Picture Book or the Derren Brown Lecture. I think the latter is available at International magic. I've only heard good things about them so they should be good (ok logical fallacy here, but never mind, you get the point). If he has both of them, then... buy him a ticket to see his show. By the pricking of my thumbs: Something wicked this way comes...

Man I want to watch his show...<_<

The stuff I posted previously all concentrate on presentation skills rather than effects, and they apply to both close-up and stage.

And oops sorry Ning... Yea Ian Rowland sucks, really really sucks... Get like Tradecraft's stuff instead. They're way better. Pshaw... British people. -_-

Holy crapola! He has those?!? He sounds serious. And seriously rich.

The thing about mentalism is that there is always so much out there. Maybe Ortiz or Nelms then. Nelms is dirt cheap, but Ortiz will stretch your budget.

Now I want to meet him....

Ning - June 29, 2006 06:24 PM (GMT)
Me too!!! He sounds loaded (Maddened - score one point for you, pro mentalist!)... is he single? Wuahahahaha... get him store credit from The Little Magic Shop la. He can use this virtual voucher to get whatever he want from Murphy's. LOL.

Oh yea, that's a great idea. Why didn't I think of it? Get him some voucher from Ning and he can buy what he wants. He'll know best what he wants, you can just give him advice.

theWeaver - June 30, 2006 08:08 PM (GMT)
Nah, he is neither rich nor a serious mentalist.. Ha.. Sad.. =P
Hmm.. Vouchers feels like giving angbao for birthday like that.. Abit lose the point of "gifts".. Hmm.. Well, see how things goes..

:off:

I've read so much good reivews about the book "The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading" by Ian Rowland, can we get it from the locally or from our dealers? Or is the official website the only place to get it?

Its already the 4th edition. Some magicians actually said they read it religiously over and over again...

Jaspas - July 1, 2006 02:57 AM (GMT)
Dude. If you get him something mentalism related, he's not going to remember that YOU gave it to him. Get him something PERSONAL. Get him something that is YOU. Something that, even after 10 years down the road, when he sees it, it'll make him remissnisece (whatever) the days you guys spent together.

Be a friend. Buy the right thing.

theWeaver - July 1, 2006 06:05 AM (GMT)
Wah, Jaspas.. That's hard sia.. All your friends, every year.. Ouch.. Must be a big headache everytime..

Ning - July 2, 2006 02:23 AM (GMT)
I dunno... i'm personally, a practical person. I like things that i can use, while cutesy stuff are ok sometimes... stuff that you can utilise well, make it more convenient. Really, you may think it's wierd coming from a girl but let's look at it in this prespective:

You spend hours, days, weeks, a month searching for that 'perfect' present. You think you finally find it, it's not cheap, you even have it nicely wrapped up and everything but when your friend opens it, they may not exactly love it/ appreciate it 100%

What me and my girlfriends do... unless we're sure what the birthday girl REALLY wants (you know how good girlfriends are, we drop ...uhm... hints closer to date, just gotta be sensitive enough to pick up the info... heh) ...we get each other shopping vouchers. From a GOOD mall lah, not your kuchingkurak kind where there's nothing at all.

This way, there's freedom for them to get ANYTHING that they desire. I think it's better that way. Certain things, clothes for instance- they may be picky on color, material, etc. Or books, you may not know if they already have it (diff edition/ hard or soft cover/ may have read it b4, etc.) ...see, all this unneeded stress ellimated and they'd thank you for it too.

Maybe can get your buddy some vouchers from taka, heeren or a bookshop he hangs out frequently at, like kino? It doesn't have to be magic!

Just my 2c worth la, cos you really appear quite lost. LOL

theWeaver - July 2, 2006 09:54 AM (GMT)
It's THAT obvious that i'm lost eh? Darn.. :ph43r:
I hate birthdays!~
