Ah, please be more specify?
Open ports for?
If you are talking about internet ports, you cant open, unless you are talking about opening ports through your router to the internet.
Cause computer dun have port setting on them, but some firewall program, like zonealarm etc, got a feature that enable to set certain ports for forwarding or coming in. Those are the virtual router ports, like the router ports that i mention above.
If you talking abt USB ports or what, hmm then it depends on what u want to do. Give me more detail, then i can help you more.

What ports do you want to open ?
Window Service Ports for Connection ?
Just go under your firewall settings and allow the ports you want.

Hmm, May i know whats the need to open the port?
What kind of program requires u that?
Because, if you not until any firewal, technically speaking, the ports are not restricted at all(Internet ports i mean). So, unless you are under a router, or else, you should be able to access the program that need the port entry. IF you are under a router, you have into the admin mode and go under port forwarding, then set the ports and IPs that you wan to forward to.(In short, direct connection)
But i think when u asked this question, it might be that the program mentioned that connection could not be done, due to reasons, and one of them are stated that you need to open the port that it wants. Alot of reasons can be due to the connection, first, could be ur internet service provider, most singtel and pacific net will be under their own firewall, thus, they might have blocked the port. Cable users wont have this kind of problem. second, the program setting, you have to set the setting to the proxy of your internet service provider, singtel or pacific, of course, if u are cable user, they dun have proxy, which explain why they dun have port blockage on their side. third, any external firewall program u have, which in this place, you dun have, which is out of the question. fourth, internet connection setting, this setting is ur own internet explorer settings, even though some program they connect to internet by their own, in fact they might actually using internet explorer to access to their server website and gain access through the program, what they called third party tunnel program, (In short, the program is a tunnel program) thus, you need to see whether ur internet explorer have the correct connection settings. :)
Hope this help.

If you are using Window XP, it has a Firewall itself and this firewall tend to block unused ports.
Try this: Control Panel -> Windows FireWall -> Exception -> Add Port
You can try this.

Not really hihs, any port could be useful, juz that some games are specific with a port so that the server could link them up easily, without sourcing for random ports everytime.
