Title: Card Patterns
Description: What the name of this Effect?

jeromefang - June 29, 2006 04:10 PM (GMT)
Hi Everyone,

Can card experts here enlighten me on actual name of this card effect and who is the creator if possible. I first saw it performed on Mondo Magic by J.B Benn. He asked a girl to choose a card, as usual the card was lost in the deck and he rubs the sides of the deck and the words "Queen of Hearts" came out. Of course it was her chosen card.

The closest performance where I can find is this clip again from Cyril. Its called Card Patterns on youtube. Hope Card Experts here can enlighten me.

Thanks Guys ^_^
Jerome

I think it's called Unshuffled? Or some variation of it?

Not too sure so dun quote me. The real experts will be here to confirm it soon.....

BTW, if you like the effect and wanna do it, prepare to buy lotsa decks and spend lotsa time faro-ing.... :D

Effect is known as unshuffled, just as Aloy said it. You just need to know how to perfect farrow for it to work.

LarryDK - June 29, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
Ding! Enlighten liao.

In mondo magic singapore, he did it once in sentosa using singapore on one side of the deck, then slowly become 4, then 2 then 1. So u need to have the perfect faro to make all those happen, which is.. Hmm, hard to master.

Ning - June 29, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
Awesome trick :) Watch Bob Chua do it... the Indonesians don't call him GOD for nothing... :ph43r:

vin87 - June 29, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
Ning got video of it? anyway can use stripper deck then faro ?

Ning - June 29, 2006 06:56 PM (GMT)
He uses a regular pack of cards... no videos but I'll ask him to come along for our next gathering, would be fun to session

The effect in question is "Unshuffled", more often than not credited to Paul Gertner. One of the regular effects I use. In my opinion it amazes even the performer.

Ning - June 30, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
The magical beauty of the perfect faro indeed!

jeromefang - June 30, 2006 02:13 AM (GMT)
Thanks Everyone ^_^

Unshuffled, now I know the effect name. Perfect Faro is hard to master, hmmm guess its now time to crunch those fingers and work on my Faros :P

Wow, Bob Chua has done it before. Would love to see this effect live. If he an join us for the next gathering, it'll be great

In Mondo Magic Singapore, when I switched on my TV I only saw the ending effect. I did'nt see it morph into 4 then 2 then 1. Must catch it when its aired on TV again. Just checked AXN's website, Mondo Magic Spore will re-run on 22 Aug 9pm and 2 episodes will be shown. Sweet... The repeat will be on 23 Aug 1pm. Glad that they're running it again. Those who missed it should catch it this time round.

Thanks again everyone ^_^

ah...I bought the Gertner Dvd just for this one. A great trick to learn.

However he only teaches the method in creating the deck, he does not teach you how to faro. You do need to be able to do out faros (perfect ones) for this trick.

Its amazing how the wordings comes out when you first try it. It fools me the first time I did it.

Pick up Michael Close's Faro dvd (Forget the actual title) if you want to learn the shuffle in more details.

I actually learnt this effect from Paul Gertner's book, Steel and Silver. It is a great book which contains some other good effects which he is known for, such as his coin matrix, ring on hourglass, and his cups and balls routine using steel ball bearings and silver cups (after which his book is titled).

But because of the stack of the deck, you can actually use several key cards to gauge if you are cutting the deck in half, so this reduces the technical difficulty of the faro by a little. As for the faro-ing itself, just practice (like all things in magic).

It's called Unshuffled if it's the one where you first see a mess, after faroshuffling, you can see 4 of the words, den faro again it becomes 2, then 1. And on the other side it's the card picked. I once saw Doug Conn did it in a video in the old Cheaters' Cheater site but if you do a search on the net, you must be surprised.

HI Guys,

The 4, 3, 2, 1 is all done part of the faro. ermz. in a certain way. I dunnoe if i say anymore it will be deemed as exposure, but yar, it only works with PERFECT Faro's. so start practising!! heehee..

And oh, before I forget, doing a Faro can be easy once you get used to it, than the next important thing comes into the picture - the speed that you can do a PERFECT Faro!

I know Uncle Bob can do it in abt 5 seconds!!! Right Ning?

Cheers!!!

Ning - July 11, 2006 08:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah... and with his eyes closed! :!!: The man is an inspiration...

Incarneto - July 12, 2006 12:44 AM (GMT)
I've tried it out before... EVen to myself it's like MAGIC! Haha... to your audiences.. TRULY MAGICAL! But it seriously take lots of time and practice for those faros..

bigbadwolf - July 12, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah its was magical even to the performer. Until now I still do not understand the physics behind it. WHY?! Is it a mathematical standard that 8 out faros always return your deck to its original position?

Yes, it's mathematical in nature. It is very interesting when you do it face up and you see how the cards are moving one cycle back to their original position.

A little add on, I am beginning to think that being able to do perfect faros is kinda like doing the muscle pass for coins.
Some people take a really long time to nail it, some people are able to do it very quickly, and some people just never can get it.

For example, Ning was just lying there talking on the phone the other day and she picked up a deck in her hands and the 2nd time she tries, she managed a perfect faro. :ph43r:
And now, she is doing it perfectly almost everytime, althought not so fast yet becoz she doesn't practise much.

I've been trying to practise it since when I 1st heard about it (albeit on an off) till now and I'm roughly getting it 1 out of 3 tries.

Sometimes life is just not fair. -_-

There are some "tricks" (which I happen to know) to getting it right. (Ask me during the next meetings, maybe those who know other tricks can share too!)

But I think that there are much more uses for perfect faros than muscle passes, so perfect faros is (imo) more useful.

I've found some "strategy" for making it more possible too, yeah, let's try it at the next meet. Maybe we can have a "perfect faro race" or something. :!!:

Yeah i guess it's kinda more useful, but then again, its not exactly an utility move. Considering how much effort it takes, have we spend enough time and effort with our DLs and false shuffles which are used much more often? B)
But then, being the magician that we all are, we just HAVE to nail that impossible sleight sometimes. :g:

GordonLi - July 16, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
Yea, I'm not very good with the faros although I have found some simple strategies too, but I am most unhappy with my handling of the faro (I have to do it with one end tabled - it is both unnatural and impractical for most closeup situations).

Sacrifice a deck of cards for this effect and you'll force yourself to master the perfect faro so you can accomplish "Unshuffled" It's really very cool... but be nice to yourself and use a new deck of cards, it's easier for you and you won't be too discouraged!

And i dunno if it'll work for you but it does for me - use a deck of poker cards that you like looking at, the first time i did a perfect faro, i was using cute THE CAT cards *lol* These aren't even air-cushioned!!!

Aww...What a nice cute deck Ning ^_^ I've never such a cute novelty deck before hehe..

Yes everyone, sacrifice a deck and master the Faro. This move really works wonder and as you slowly see the metamorphosis of the markings morph into the words, its really like pure magic. Its very visual. Just watch the clip I posted here by Cyril. It's indeed that visual.

This is a sacrifice well worth it. I did'nt have a cute little deck like Ning but I had a deck of Tally Ho which I bought a month ago and rarely used, so I tried and surprisingly I did 8 straight Faros. I was like :!!: seeing the end result of the 8 Faros. Kudos to Paul Gretner for coming out with this effect
