Title: Peanutbutter In Singapore
mgshn - July 18, 2006 04:58 PM (GMT)
Some coworkers were discussing our upcoming trip to SG and someone asked if Peter Pan brand PB was available there. I figure if anybody would know it would be a bunch of magicians. I'm not sure why I figured that, but I did. BTW, it would have to be smooth style.
Understand that while I strongly prefer Jiff Super Crunchy, I can easily adapt to just about any local PB culture. Ed, however, is pretty set in his ways and will have to lug it from the States if he can't find it there.
Can anyone tell me if it's available?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

LOL....are you serious mate?!?
Yes we have peanut butter in Singapore, but I'm not sure about the Peter Pan brand. I'm not wild about peanut butter.
But there are plenty of peanut butters in the supermarket last time i checked.
And i suspect it's safe to assume that there is not going to be national shortage of peanut butter anytime soon. :g:

Actually yes, Ed is serious. He tells us that if Peter Pan (smooth) isn't available in SG then he'll bring some from here. I'm hoping someone there can verify.
For my part and with upwards of 17,000 stalls available, I'm looking to eat something a lot more interesting than peanutbutter. (Heck, even perhaps more interesting than peanutbutter and jelly.)

With eating as one of the biggest national past time, i certainly hope you will find something more interesting than peanut butter while you are here. We are talking about 4 major racial influences in our plates.
Ok, the next part is from Ning so if it's inaccurate......... :g:
Ning said she saw Peter Pan peanut butter (smooth too) in NTUC (that's a local grocer chain) before. So yah, seems like it's available so no need for Ed to strap any peanut butter to his body on his way here. B)
Speaking of things that you cannot get in Singapore, i trust you have heard about the whole (embarassing) no chewing gum thingie about Singapore?
Ning - July 18, 2006 06:23 PM (GMT)
Riiiiiight...
Aloy woke me up at 2 in the morning to ask me about peanut butter (?!?!?!?!?!) so yeah, I remember seeing that brand being sold at NTUC (they're the market leader in SG, so they have many many outlets) but I hope it's the very same thing that's in the States.
I recall it has a red label with a peter pan character flying on one side with the brand name in bold (yellow text?). I'm not sure, I've always been a Skippy fan myself (smooth only, not crunchy, thank you)... so, maybe to play it safe, you can ask Ed to bring a couple of jars of his PPPB(S) with him, just in case
There's supermarkets like Jasons and Cold Storage here, besides Carrefour... so I'm pretty sure Ed will find something.
Going... back... to... sleep... now... zzzzz... peanut butter... *smerchkk*

rotfl!!! I didn't mean for Aloy to wake you and was a bit surprised he was still up. If it helps, the information is much appreciated! Maybe he won't have to depend on the PB body loads. 'cides, that'll make more room for the gum :)
Heck, as long as there is a Carrefour we should be able to survive. It's about the only place w/ any variety in Dubai and Cairo. Though it sounds like you have a much larger selection of stores.
OK, let's have everybody sleep though the night because you have a big show in a few days!
Bob

 She lies Bob....
If she is sleeping, you wouldn't be able to wake her up even if you smash a peanut butter jar on her head.
Anyways, if there's anything else, you might want to get a bottle of good wine or whiskey while you are going thru the duty free before you enter Singapore.
Alcohol is significantly more expensive in SG because of the tax and all.
mgshn - July 19, 2006 04:18 AM (GMT)
:D Duty free is good but SG only allows in one liter. I'm planning on a decent bottle of single malt. After that we'll just have to pay the taxes.
I didn't realize, btw, that chewing gum wasn't allowed in the country; I thought you were only prohibited from chewing it in public. And even with all that I'm looking forward to the trip.
Take care and thank you for all the help.
Bob
Aloy - July 19, 2006 04:27 AM (GMT)
Erm...if i remember it correctly, you are allowed 3 packets of gum when you enter Singapore, just not more than that.
But you can chew it in public.
It is really embarassing that this is one of the things Singapore is getting more famous for.
I remember being asked by an aussie friend whether we put it in condoms and swallow them when we try to bring it into SG. :!!:
mgshn - July 19, 2006 04:35 AM (GMT)
Actually, I think SG is more famous for the caning, followed by executing drug trafficers. I think I'll try to steer clear of all three.
OK, it's off to bed for me!

LOL !!!
this has to be one of the funniest threads I've read in a long time.
had a real bad day so far, so this really made me smile big time.
thanks.
Maddened - July 19, 2006 09:30 AM (GMT)
Yes Peter Pan PB is available here. My current jar happens to be Peter Pan actually.
As for the alcohol/wine... I think you can buy one bottle in. I'm not entirely sure about this, so don't quote me if anything unsurly occurs. -_-
Ning - July 19, 2006 04:15 PM (GMT)
Body loads are the way to go!!! :ph43r: :ph43r: :ph43r:
Besides the booze, you guys may wanna buy ciggies too if possible. That's if you smoke. It's quite expensive to buy them from shops over here, you can ask Aloy how much money he's literally made vanish (up in smoke!!!) to feed his habit <_<
Ning: Slowly dying from 2nd hand smoke everytime she meets her walking ashtray of a boyfriend :ph43r:

See....Ning is trying to land you in jail before you get into Singapore Bob. :ph43r:
You CANNOT bring duty free cigarettes into Singapore. At least not the last time i checked.
Ning - July 19, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
You're kidding right? I know people who work at the airport who bring home a carton of ciggies all the time :ph43r: Wait, are you sure it's illegal?!
Well........... alright, I'm sorry. Heh. My bad then if it's a mistake :g: At least that gave you a chance maybe, to practise some real time escape artist skills? You can break into that niche market :!!:
mgshn - July 19, 2006 05:39 PM (GMT)
Ning, I know you wouldn't want to see me in jail...
Aloy, I'll be passing through Dubai which has the largest Duty Free shopping area in the world. I'll be picking up, as I mentioned, a bottle of scotch for me. I'm torn about the smokes... I don't smoke but will gladly pick some up for you if you like. Let me know the brand and I hope Ning won't hate me too much.
On a related note, doesn't SG allow medicinal gum, such as Nicorette?
Aloy - July 19, 2006 05:49 PM (GMT)
 I'm serious mate, you can't bring in duty free cigs, believe me, i've tried B) But thanks much for the offer thou! :)
Nicorette is available in Singapore.
Oh, and a little bit on the drinks. The rule is this, you are allowed 1 litre of wine, 1 litre of liquour, and 1 litre of beer, so it's 3 litres in total. But you cannot get more than 1 litre of each type.
So it depends on how much you like them and what's your poison ;)
theWeaver - July 19, 2006 06:07 PM (GMT)
I think you can bring 3 packs of ciggs in.. 1 open, 2 unopened. That's all..
Nope i don't smoke, i just happen to know.
And.. How can anyone not love crunchy peanut butter?????? What has the world come to? *crunch crunch
Ning - July 19, 2006 06:17 PM (GMT)
TheWeaver - Errrr... i dunno. Psychological trauma maybe? Hummmm... Some people may have issues.

Mgshn - Jail?! Why, of course not! ...Though the place DOES have very decent armed security and free food plus lodging throughout your stay, and it's like Hotel California. You know?
"You can checkout any time you like, But you can never leave!" :ph43r:

What if I wanted some Vodka. I live for vodka.
Any idea about the caps on Vodka?
mgshn - July 20, 2006 02:07 PM (GMT)
One liter of hard liquor (including Vodka) and I'm keeping mine. :)
