Title: Anyone Can Tell Me The Name Of This Trick?
Description: Correct section?
Vic - July 19, 2006 12:46 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. Guys, Whats the name of this trick and where can I get it?
The effect is that the spectator names a card and the magician pulls it out of his wallet.
^_^ Thanks.
Maddened - July 19, 2006 01:02 PM (GMT)
I'm afraid you have to be clearer than that because I'm sure there are a dozen tricks that produce the effect you just described.
Maybe you can say where you've seen this, or describe in greater detail what goes on (unless it's really as simple as getting some guy to name a card and then pulling it out of the wallet).
Here's one way to acheive what you described:
1) Empty wallet of cards, coins, notes and other things that may get in the way of the deck of cards.
2) Take a full deck of cards (with jokers) and stuff it into your wallet.
3) If wallet still cannot hold all the cards, just cut the cards in half. The spectators wouldn't notice this little detail.
4) Approach your spectator and get him to name a card, any card. If he says, "Mastercard" or "Visa" or some other cheeky variant, you're legalised by the laws of the land to enact physical violence on him.
5) After the card has been named, take out your wallet, go through the 54 cards you have stuffed in it and pull out the one the spectator just named.
6) The spectator would be dumbfounded and speechless, and may even exhibit excitatory behaviour such as cursing at you, walking away quickly, or attempting to punch you. Ignore all that and just take a bow.
Ok so you see the problem here; without more details about the effect you saw I don't think we can help you much (or at least I can't). B)
Vic - July 19, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
Ok.. maybe I was not too specific. Its like this. The magician opens his wallet and asks the spectator to name a card. Can be any card. He then goes ahead to pull the card out of his wallet.
I've seen this trick being performed more than once, and I noticed that the card was pulled out from different compartments. However, the wallet looks ok. It doesn't look thick.

It might be Kolossal Killer.
bigbadwolf - July 19, 2006 01:22 PM (GMT)
Its Kolossal Killer by Kenton Knepper. Its a brillant trick, get K.E.N.T by the same creator also.
With the KK equipped, you got the best out for you when you mess up on a card trick. You don't even need to use the ID as a out.
Try it ^_^
Aloy - July 19, 2006 01:48 PM (GMT)
Kolossal Killer is a possibility.....
But seriously, it could be any one of a number of possibilities, there are so many ways to achieve that.
But i guess it is not the most important thing to find the EXACT effect that was shown to you, but for you to find your own method for it and possibly injecting your own handling into it.
Vic - July 19, 2006 02:05 PM (GMT)
Okie thanks guys. I thinking of what Aloy said. Thinking of my own method (:
Erm. I checked the Kolossal Killer website already. Must you buy their wallet or you can use your own? ^_^
mgshn - July 19, 2006 02:23 PM (GMT)
Kolossal Killer is a good explanation and an excellent trick. You don't need their wallet, though I've heard it's a good one and comes with an additional effect. Other commercial options are available or you can easily find one with the right characteristics once you understand the workings. Also there are modifications that make other wallets and non-wallet presentation options available.
A while ago Collectors Workshop sold an effect that was exactly as described. The spectator names a card. The magician reaches into a somewhat oversized wallet-like thing and shows the spectator what to them looks to be their playing card. I was amazed the first time I saw this performed... and the second... and the third. (OK, I'm a bit slow sometimes)
Between the two I would choose Kolossal Killer.

I have Kolossal Killer in my wallet ever since I learnt that trick. Its a fantastic trick, and practically any wallet will work.
KK is a trick that does not require any sleights or any funny moves to remember, and its almost IMPOSSIBLE to cock up this trick. There's also a WIDE range of patter you can use.. :P
So.. When caught "impromptu" and asked to perform in front of like 20 friends of yours, you start trembling like mad and you temporary lose all your sleights and can hardly show a proper DL, try KK. B)
It saved my ass quite a number of times. Strong magic, without skills, no sleights involved, quite impromptu, self-working and impossible to cock up; what more can you ask? :!!:

Ning - July 19, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
Yep... besides Kenton Knepper's stuff that's already been mentioned, you might wish to explore the heirloom wallet too :) It's a specially designed leather wallet for mentalism, quite new in the market too... See murphysmagic.com, it also has its photo besides the desciption I think.
Maddened - your wit is wicked  When Aloy's not around, can I take you home with me to show you off to the relatives (especially the annoying ones) as the substitute boyfriend? Wuahahahahaha...

This also applies to NETS, Library and EZ-Link cards, fyi... :g: Not forgetting the all important NRIC card too!!!

Can anyone say "ouch" for Aloy?
Ouch~
Aloy - July 19, 2006 05:16 PM (GMT)
She is just feeling sore because i read this post while she was watching TV. And i went out to her and asked her if she believes that whatever card she names it will be in my wallet. I then proceed to do exactly as Maddened described except i just took out the whole deck and openly searched for her card, and i was laughing so hard in her face at the end.....
theWeaver - July 19, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
Right.. And i have any word you can think of inside my magic bag.. Which contains a Dictionary..
Ning - July 19, 2006 05:48 PM (GMT)
"OUCH" <_< :ph43r:  :g:
Rule #1: Always make sure you perform at the right timing... distracting the girlfriend when she's supporting Jonathan Leong (omg... he looks so CUTE today, can anyone look so yummy?!? And he took off his jacket when performing!!!) singing his heart out on national TV live on Singapore Idol is NOT the best thing to do. Ahem <_<
Rule #2: Only lame comedians laugh at their own jokes. I've never seen anyone so amused with his own trick while the supposed audience (yours truly) was just looking very dour (oh, my Jonathan Leong!!) while the 'bai-ka' performer pretty much giggled hmself to death.
This is a classic example on what works seemingly best in theory, truly does not transend into real life examples...

I know this is :off: ...but PLEASE vote for Jon Leong!!!He's my next SINGAPORE IDOL!!!
Aloy - July 19, 2006 05:51 PM (GMT)
Erhem....moderators, this one over here is posting nonsense again....please someone give her a warning level. :ph43r:

No, no...please!!! Don't suspend me for 30 days, don't make me go directly to jail, don't pass go, and don't receive $200! I promise will be a good girl, I'll sacrifice ice-cream, just don't take away my Jon Leong shrine above... puh-leeeeeaZe!!! :ph43r: :ph43r: :ph43r:
Has anyone read his blog? Aheheheheh. *blush*
PS: Magic by misdirection is important what. In my defense, i really think TIMING is very important... <_< So there!!! Ok, i've made my point... i'll now siam... :!!:
theWeaver - July 19, 2006 05:59 PM (GMT)
Yea, give her a warning level~ See, under my nick there's this stupid warning level thingy too! Even thou it's reduced to 0%, but it's still there! So ugly~ I look like a criminal! Aloy i hate you~
Ah, just to be on topic again, otherwise i ll get another warning.
I ll like to say to Vec, if you have seen the trick performed quite a few times, you SHOULD notice something different other than the compartment's difference if it's Kolossal Killer.. Unless you are SOOO lucky.. Well.. Yah.. So i guess that's not Kolossal Killer you've seen.
Lefty - July 19, 2006 07:13 PM (GMT)
Any links for the "Kolossal Killer"? sounds cool. :g:
Lefty - July 19, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)
By the way, what is it? A card or a menuscript? So is the effect like you pull out a card in your wallet and show them that that is thier cards?
Ning - July 19, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
See Kenton Knepper's website
here for all the links and details ^_^ Murphys carries the manuscript for Kolossal Killer and KENT as well, so you can either get it from your favorite magic dealer or direct from Kenton, which may be good if you decide you wanna invest in his special wallet ;)
Hope this helps you Lefty!
Ning :)
Aloy - July 19, 2006 08:03 PM (GMT)
Actually Kolossol Killer has been around for quite a while, definitely not new.
If i remember correctly, i think there's 2 versions available. The original version, and a marketed version. Or maybe more.
And there's a optional, special wallet that you can get to go along with it to make it easier.
The experts will be in to give full details with release dates and credits if you need the info. ;) B)
Anyway, it's one of those effects that I thought is damn cool, but never took the effort to prepare and practise for it.
A shame, i should try it sometimes.
bigbadwolf - July 19, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
:off: Sidetrack a little, how about the heirloom effect? I don't really catch the effect behind it. I only know there is an old photograph of an old man included in the effect, other then that, i'm clueless.
Can somebody shed some light on this?
Back to the KK topic,
Kolossal Killer's
PROS
*impromptu
*no need to carry 52 cards
*no special wallets
*no sleights needed
*always works
*cheap and good (ok la, not really cheap also)
*the card can be examined
CONS
*wallet not examinable (there are several version to make this examinable, but you will need to get the Kolossal Konceptions, another book written for additional handling of the KK)
Maddened - July 20, 2006 03:02 AM (GMT)
*facepalm*
The things that go on here when I'm asleep. Oh behave!
Ning > Sure! What's for dinner? :P
Aloy > I read your post and couldn't believe that you did that. Now I'm the one laughing till my sides hurt. Oh man, that's classic!!
Back on topic...
Heirloom is bascially KK but using a different presentation and a different "out" so to speak. It's more theatrical, but remember that the photo of the old man would be a photo of an ang-mo old man. So unless you have a story that can CONVINCINGLY explain why you have a picture of a big, white guy in your wallet, I suggest you just go with KK.
As for the wallet not being examinable, WHY THE HECK WOULD YOU WANT THEM TO EXAMINE YOUR WALLET IN THE FIRST PLACE?! Don't forget that it's your personal wallet, and as far as they are concerned, the wallet is just something to carry the card in. Don't place too much emphasis on the wallet and they wouldn't too. Let them wow over the card or the letter or the photo or whatever instead.
Kenton... I used to think he's some super great guy who has found the holy grail of mentalism, but nowadays I'm hearing more and more bad stuff about him. Pure Kentonism anyone? Heh...
Ning - July 20, 2006 03:53 AM (GMT)
The Heirloom wallet is similar to the one KK has, and it doesn't have to be limited to the use of the Heirloom trick with the bunch of angmoh people who are 'family' *LOL*
I know many who use it ala Predator Wallet... Do a google and you'll realise that this Predator Wallet doesn't come cheap! But some people swear that this mentalism tool is a huge reputation maker, just like my good buddy David Lai ^_^ I think a couple of people saw him perform it during our jam session when he came by. Anyways, the
Heirloom Wallet is a much cheaper alternative.
If you like the idea of using 'your personal' wallet to throw out your prediciton... Check it all out, it may be something you might find useful! ;)

The description I provided is the Collector's effect and requires a very special setup. (i.e., no real exposure)
KK, otoh, is something you can easily make up yourself once you understand how it works and, as many have said, does not require a wallet that is very special (somewhat special helps though) and your own cards.
BTW, anyone who knows KK can teach the basics in a few seconds. However, the effect, as sold by Kenton has lots of additional details and subtilities that are overlooked by just about everyone (including myself).
