THE REVIEW

Who is he? ...Flourishers here know him as THE man with ALL the Jerry Nuggets, and any self-respecting cardician knows him for his excellent card sleights and originality! Meet, close up genius, Mr. Dominique Duvivier!

What you get:
A solid performance and instructional magic DVD with a total running time of 3h 25 mins, where you’ll get to see Jerry Nuggets used in every shot wherever and whenever he’s doing a card routine *grin* Yes flourishers, I can hear your gasps… he IS the legendary Frenchman who purchased the entire stock of Jerry Nuggets. Eat your heart out!!!

What you need:
A DVD player that allows you to set up the disc with the running English commentary provided by the lovely Alexandra Duvivier. The entire dialogue is done in French and it honestly does need a bit of getting used to as Alex is the sole English translator for all 3 parties - the performing Duvivier, and the 2 spectators, which is herself and her husband). I got used to this by the 2nd routine, so don’t let this small setback hinder the solid effects taught on this DVD!
Knowledge of basic sleights are also required, so I wouldn’t quite recommend this to absolute beginners.

What happens:
Despite being translated, the teach-in is clear and intermediate cardicians would be happy that no time is wasted on the DVD in explaining the basic sleights. Sleights are only taught in detail when it is Duvivier’s original variations of sleights, and are explained in different tricks in the DVD. It is only when he has an original version of a certain sleight that it is elucidated. Most of the other time, the viewer is expected to know basics like card controls and false shuffles.

I realized that there is a lot of focus on explaining the subtleties used(which in my opinion is much more valuable than secrets) with great details by Duvivier, who can be quite animated (perhaps, it is a French thing).

In one of the effects ("Running gag"), there are many different lapping techniques explained, along with the relevant misdirection and cover. Even if you don't do this routine, the lapping techniques taught can be used in a great variety of other effects… not just cards, so that was one of my favorite bits.
In another effect ("Flying card"), Duvivier showed 5 versions of 1 effect, as it has evolved over time for him. The effect itself is great but what makes it all the more interesting, is to see the way he thinks and the way the handling has evolved over time as he puts the effect under scrutiny to eliminate the weak parts yet at the same time keeping the effect pure to its original form.

In this DVD, most of the featured effects are routines that involve cards. All of them can be done with a normal deck of cards (get yer own Jerry Nuggets!) without any special gimmicks. Quite a few of them are even impromptu effects. Besides cards, there is an interesting coin effect using an Okito coin box and Duvivier also does a mental magic trick which involves a thought of card but no deck used. What to know more? Get the DVD! *LOL* Overall, I like it and comes recommended.

When you’re done with all the teach-ins and performance bits, you can also watch the bonus footage of the father-daughter pair, where they were interviewed on their thoughts in their experience performing together. In case you didn’t know, Alexandra Duvivier is one solid cardician… a mean sleight of hand artist, in her own right ;)
