Deck That Shuffles Itself by Dominique Duvivier

EFFECT:

The performer takes a deck out of its case. He spreads it face-up on the table. The deck is now squared and put aside.

The performer pretends to shuffle the deck invisibly: he pretends to take the deck (in fact the deck stays on the table and he acts as if he had the deck in his hands), put it on the table in front of him, cut it in half, turn one pile face-up and shuffle both parts with a riffle shuffle, square the deck, take it and put it back where the real deck was.

The deck is spread on the table, and all the cards are mixed, half face-up and half face-down, as if these fictitious actions became real.

The deck is put aside. The performer separates the cards in the same way with an invisible deck in his hands and then puts it back. The real cards are spread, and all the cards are face-up again. He squares the deck and puts it face down. He then spread the cards, showing that only the card backs are visible.

The cards are squared and taken with the right hand. The face card is the Queen of Hearts. The performer does a magic move and spreads the cards again, showing that they are now all the Queen of Hearts!

Squaring the deck again, the performer does another magic move and spreads the deck to show only ordinary cards. He then spreads the other side to show only the backs of the cards!

The performer puts the deck back in it case and closes it. As he puts it away, he changes his mind and hits the short side of the case, showing that the image on the front of the case has become compressed.

Comes complete with gaffed card deck and detailed instructions on how to perform this trick.

THE REVIEW

What you get & what you need:

A special deck of Bicycle cards that does all the work for you… well, mostly. You still need a nimble set of hands and some slick patter. Ham up on your personality and presentation to make this one a blast!

The instructions are easy to understand and this visual trick is easy for your audience to follow and comprehend. Card beginners will find it very easy to do, with just a bit of practice as this requires no sleight of hand skills… you just need to spread the deck to work the magic! *grin*

What happens:
There are multiple climaxes, with each building on the next. Suggestions for patter and storyline are provided and are pretty good (being generic enough to fit whatever you can come up with), though I’d honestly recommend you come up with your own individual style of presentation. This card routine is best done on a table with a close up mat though it can also be done without a table.

I’d say this can be considered a magician’s fooler due to its similarity with the classic Cheek to Cheek card routine in the starting bit, during the initial opening sequence. This gimmick deck is of course, unexaminable but it is not an issue if you start with a regular bicycle deck and do a deck switch midway… you’d just fry your audience. With good audience management, and a helpful volunteer (read: no hecklers!), you can even let the spectator spread the cards out for an even stronger impact as the magic happens in their hands.

When performing this to friends during supper, I got very good reactions. The girls were giggling all the way and were very amused with the way the deck of cards kept visually changing. I skipped the last part though, where the box gets ‘squashed’ …I simply did a deck switch and continued entertaining with the regular deck used earlier before this effect.

Purists may not like gimmick decks like this but this is a very strong effect, and really got the audience going  It is also very nicely made and comes recommended!
