Learn to hold a deck of cards well... play more card games like tai di or sumthing...
learn to deal the cards... learn to turn over cards.... be loose and u will go on from there... u need to learn good natural methods of card handling.. its important to get the rite technique. meet some magicians or flourishers... they might be able to guide u.... get Crash course from ellusionist.com

Never have I EVER seen a laymen not impressed when I do flourishes.. or maybe that's just me.
Flourishes are an art form totally different then magic, but there are some grey areas. Go look around www.mredux.tk, maybe the free tutorials might help :D

Hi Guys,
I am not a good card worker or close-up magician. But I still do some card tricks in front of layman and they are still impress.
of course it is good, if you can fool magicians. For me, it is good so long your dare to perform in public.
Do believe me, some magicians can only perform to show their close one.

One fundamental that I can't stress enough: DLs
DL or TL is a category of a very basic and staple sleight which many hobbyist magicians (including myself) take for granted when you first begin. I'm starting to regret that now, that's why I'm practicing my every time I fiddle with a deck of cards.
It's very tempting to jump to the more visually impacting sleights at the beginning and totally ignore the [edited]. Not that you can't perform any card tricks without it, but I came to realise that you actually can IMPROVE a card trick if you incorporate [edited] in your routine.
Not that you do nothing but [edited]. Of course you can practice the other good stuff as well, just don't neglected it.
Maybe I'm a slow learner, but I have been doing in excess of 50 DLs everyday for about 1 month now and I'm still far from perfect.
Lastly, from a performance viewpoint, after your countless rehearsals in front of a mirror, perform it to a fellow magician friend. I'll guarantee that your hands will shake during the first few rounds unless you're really thick-skinned or have nerves of steel. This happens to almost anyone who's new to performing card sleights. Performing in front of a magician friend helps you get past that anxiety, and it also doesn't really matter if you slip up. Plus, you can get some good feedback from a brother of the same art.
Good luck in your pursuit for your magical perfection! ;)

awwwwwwwwwww ... if only this is in the article competition ..... i would sign up multiple accs to vote for your article .. too bad the event is over.. on the dl part i totally agree on that.thats the most basic and must perfect move in magic and people who start of with magic always miss that out.. same goes for me.. when i first started magic i was doing colour changes and productions instead of passes, counts and dls and on the hand shaking part it occurs occasionaly when im too nervous haha(not as bad as JC SUM thou)
Winder - November 21, 2004 02:04 AM (GMT)
He shake cause he mostly does Stage magic, whats more he's just infront of the president, who knows his bodyguard might have their pistols pointing at him already.
Moondust - November 21, 2004 04:09 AM (GMT)
:D  You guys really crack me up!
Btw, JC Sum? Is he the one who did the ACR during the President's Star Charity?
Winder - November 21, 2004 04:22 AM (GMT)
Yup the 1 who did ACR to the president and talk about the "King of Hearts", keke.
Moondust - November 21, 2004 04:26 AM (GMT)
Yeah. I remembered seeing his hands shake. But I guess people do take pity on the performer sometimes. A few months ago when I got back into magic and did a trick, my pals would say "it looks good, but try to get more practice because your hands are shaking." Lol. They're all very supportive though.

Thanks for your positive feedback and the invite!
Sure. I'll love to attend, But because I just started a new business and juggling a new full-time job (that means 4 hours sleep a nite with stress-linked insomnia), I'll definitely have to take time off to go.
I promise that I'll meet you guys first chance I get. To tell you the truth, I NEED the time for leisure activities. My social life has been virtually non-existent ever since my business planning started.
Don't be disappointed by my backdated and mediocre grasp of magic though :P

Eh brudder, you ONLY teach me spoon bending?! Hell, that's one of the fastest and best learning sessions I had!
Man, did you know how WICKED the reactions were? Teach me more of that good stuff and I'm gonna be really diligent! It was worth every minute of my time!
Yeah!!!!
Xtreme - November 22, 2004 07:47 PM (GMT)
 haha... WICKED reactions.. completely stunnnnnedddddddddd... illusionist, teach my bro more stuff and he will continue to stun me .. esp the spoon bending.. argh..!!! -_-
Moondust - November 22, 2004 07:56 PM (GMT)
More good stuff coming up! Don't worry! You won't be disappointed, I'm telling you! Just give me time. I'm @#$%@#!!! busy!
Eh brudder, when are YOU going to show me some good stuff on your own instead of just purely following instructions? I know you're a newbie, but considering what I've taught you, use your imagination to come up with a simple yet convincing routine, will ya?
Don't worry about flopping it. I'll help you make any adjustments necessary. Just use some of that brain juice. Hell, if you can do well in studies, I don't think you'll find it difficult to come up with a unique routine.
Show me the next time, ok?
-Luv, elder bro.
