Sleight Of Mind by Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup

SUGGETION AND MIND CONRTROL THE MENTALIST'S TOOLKIT

Immaculate Deception...

Sleight of Mind is a Mentalist's toolkit of psychological quirks and techniques that anyone can use to enhance their performance and create stunning, original effects. No props and no stooges are required - just observation and the application of simple methods that will change the way you interact with others - on and off stage - forever.

With respective backgrounds in Hypnosis and NLP, authors Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup have created an indispensable guide to powerful mental trickery. But this is no dry reference manual; instead you'll find this an entertaining and above all, truthful, explanation of a range of techniques - many of which have remained hidden for years. Covering the use of suggestion, waking hypnosis and NLP methods of creating rapport, reading your subjects thoughts, etc, Sleight of Mind is THE book for Mentalists and Magicians at any level.

 My thoughts:

Having no prior experience performing stage hypnotism & with zero knowledge on NLP, Sleight of Mind (SoM for short) was a great starter for mentalists/ magicians who need the right information. There's much psychology explained in this book, and on the whole it was quite easy to read and digest. The principles taught can be used on stage and out. Yep, it's got handy bits in there you can use in everyday scenarios too!

One thing tho, do NOT expect this to be like Mind, Myth & Magick... there are a few mentalism routines in there, but its sole purpose is not about teaching you specific tricks like TA Water or Banachek in their books. These effects are more like illustrated examples of the various concepts the writers are trying to explain.

I found their topics about suggestions, and building anchors very handy. And there's the bit about rapport building too, which I think many of us here who perform, would find extremely useful.

This book isn't cheap, but you get what you invest in... SoM is a gem and I haven't seen or heard any bad reviews about it. I was so impressed that I actually got the 2nd book (Geist) by the same authors. Look out for the review shortly ;)

Sleight of Mind is an incredible find. The material makes a lot of sense but it's just something which people do not sit down and break down the parts to understand. I haven't even gotten to the deep hypnosis or NLP material in the book yet and have only read the first few chapters but this material is really useful and not pipedreams at all.
So far I have learned a lot of blatantly obvious information except it's so blatantly obvious that we do not stop and think about it. After stopping and thinking about it I found that after understanding the workings instead of just letting human nature take its course, one can REALLY creat and control a setting, situation, and for lack of a better word, people. I would not like this book to fall into the hands of the wrong people as a lot of hell could and would break loose. I can't wait to delve deeper into this book. It's incredibly useful information which can be applied to any social situation.
