Black Widow for USD250? Electric Touch for USD200? Rainmaker for USD160? Icarus for USD400?

When did you come across a cheap effect; a GREAT and cheap effect? A GREAT effect that fools laymen and maybe even magicians who own all of the props above?

It doesnt mean that a $5.90 tricks you bought at 7-11 should be overlooked, while a $200 effect doesnt mean it has to be good.

So lets start sharing what cheap and good effects you think there are out there in the market..

Remember to state the followings:
- Name of the trick
- Price of the trick
- Brief description of the trick (up to you)
- Where you got it (up to you)

I'll start the ball rolling!

- Crazy Cube - $2
A dice is place inside a black box and covered with a lid, and then placed into another bigger black box. The number of the dice is then predicted.

- Squeakers - $3
Damn fun to play with sia.. Hahaha.

- Magic coin box - $10
Signed coin vanishes, and appear inside a box inside a box inside a box and inside a bloth bag tied with a rubberband.

- Colour monte - $10

- Invisible deck - $10

- Multiplying sponge balls - $9

- Wild Cards - $10

Woohoo..

Aladdin Hanky - $9.90

This is 1 of the magic effect which is under $10 and i like it alot.

I spent $9.50 at a local magic shop buying this thing called the "zap! printer".. (visual "card printing")

Unfortunately, it only allowed bridge sized cards.
But fortunately... I'll be able to use it to 'print' name cards! :g:

But of course, great magic effects. Hmm, I would say a cheap svengali deck. The reactions you get are so good, it's extremely dissapointing. Since it uses a trick deck, and not much skill. :(

Packet tricks? Well, I don't really fancy it cos that's where the laymen will say those are the "cheat-small-children" type of tricks.

Of course, have to qualify, not all packet tricks are like that.

By the way, a Invisible Deck is only $10? I bought mine for $20! Where did you get yours?

Color monte for sure, super nice effect, i will always do this for events, visual and inspectable, nice story for kids and also adults. One for those things where you will never regret buying them, furthermore handling not that dificult. :D

I cannot remember le.. Haha.

There's this trick called Penentration or something like that. Its how a coin (which can also be signed) penentrates through a rubber sheet. Way way way more visual that Melting Point or Descent or whatever coin thru dunno what thing out there in the market.. Haha.

Well, I dont know about you, but I totally flipped when I saw that effect. I was so astonished, the moment I pushed the coin thru the rubber sheet. :!!:

bigbadwolf - September 4, 2006 11:25 PM (GMT)

Perhaps you will be interested to know, coming from L&L in October is a new DVD from Max Maven. According to his best friend, the premise is that one spents 10 dollars (probably US) and 10 mins in a drug store, and came up with a fabulous 55 mins performance. (Since Max is a mentalist, probably it will be a mentalism performance).

Hopefully, this is relevent.

If you don't mind making the props yourself, "do-it-yourself" magic is a very low cost way to get great effects (everything from close-up to stage illusions) for a very small amount of money. On my site, The Wizards' Journal is filled with do-it-yourself projects every month, but you'll also find ideas in the various monthly magic magazines you may subscribe to, as well as in Tarbell, Mark Wilson's Courses, Rice Encyclopedia of Silks, and so on.

Here's what we made recently (The Wizards' Journal #10):

"Sefalaljia" from an inexpensive plastic crate- total cost with ropes and rings - $3.00 for a five minute close-up act. The full stage act adds about $5.00 more to the total cost.

The least expensive stage Illusion I know of is Jim Gerrish's "Transfigmigration Illusion", in his PVC Pipe book #2 - total cost to make is under $10.

So get out the workshop tools and save a bundle, while making props that don't look like the stuff every other magician is doing.

$3 for a 5 minutes performance is indeed very very good.. Nice.
