We had a fun informal contest last month, with Dominique Duviver's Aladin as the prize for the essay contributing 'competition' *grin* It was well-recieved and the results are now out here! Do take a read when you have the time, it's pretty entertaining stuff from our fellow Singaporean magicians! :lol:

Major Arcana by Brad Toulouse & Mephysto Magick Studio
This is an outstanding Mentalism trick that fools all who see it!
Effect
The performer removes from his pocket a small velvet pouch. Explaining that all events in life occur due to some "choice or chance" a demonstration of this phenomenon begins. From the pouch is removed a small "casting ring" as well as three dice. The performer asks the spectator to attempt to cast the dice in the ring. The dice are totaled. Let's say the total is 11 (any number can be arrived at; the dice are not gimmicked in any manner). This, explains the performer, is an example of chance.
Now an example of choice takes place; the spectator is simply asked to select either the number 1, 2, or 3. Let's say 3 is selected. The two numbers selected by choice and chance are added (in this case 11 plus 3, the total is 14). From the pouch a piece of parchment is removed and handed to the spectator to read. It contains information on the 21 cards which make up the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Card number 14 (in this case the card entitled "Temperance") is read aloud to see if its characteristics apply to the spectator!
A packet of Tarot Cards is removed from the pouch. The performer notes that although choice and chance do come into play, the forces of magick can also exert a strong influence. As the cards are spread, only one card is seen to be face down in the middle of the pack. It is turned over and found to be the card number fourteen... TEMPERENCE!
Note: The chosen card is freely selected by the spectator! A different card can be chosen each time with the same amazing results! The chosen card is the only one found reversed in the Tarot pack! The effect resets almost instantly, making it ideal for walk around performers!

I Knew It All The Time by Paul Green
Effect
The magician explains that it is easy to fool people with his card tricks because the cards are so small. He offers to do a trick that everyone can follow and proceeds to produce a JUMBO card from his pocket. After a card is selected, he turns over the jumbo card and reveals a duplicate card. He offers to repeat the same trick and produces a second jumbo card from his pocket. This time, the magician gets into trouble, or so the spectators think, and again reveals the desired results. Finally, he offers to do the trick a third time without resorting to the regular cards. The magician produces a third jumbo card and asks that a number of spectators decide upon a final card. Turning over the jumbo card, the magician is once again victorious. To further prove he knew what the final card would be, he produces t he chosen card from another deck of cards that has been in plain sight during the entire procedure.

Effect
Two paper bags are shown. There is a 2 foot red rope in one bag and a 2 foot white rope in the other. Snap your fingers and the ropes change places. Snap again and they jump back to where they started. The spectators think you have an extra length of rope in each bag - they are correct! You reach into the bags and bring out two 24 inch, red and white striped ropes, leaving the bags completely empty!

Effect
Performer picks up a sheet of tissue paper and tears it to pieces, then puts a piece on the table. The torn piece of paper starts to visually become an egg. Finally, the performer breaks the egg to prove it is real.

Autobend Silverware by Devin Knight and Al Mann
Al Mann & Devin Knight were some of the early originators of self bending spoon techniques. This is the REAL work on self-bending spoons developed jointly by Al Mann and Devin Knight during the mid 80s.
You get the exact method used by Devin in newspaper office thru out the years to garner front page publicity. Show two spoons, one in each hand. The spectator is given a choice of either the stem or bowl of one of the spoons. Which ever he chooses (no force) that part of the spoon bends forward in a slow spooky manner.
Now the spoon in the other hand starts to visibly bend and is dropped into the spectator's hand WHILE STILL BENDING for complete examination without any switch.
The second spoon then becomes rubbery and flops around like loose rubber. Suddenly the rubbery spoons breaks in half and falls into the person's hand for examination.
Only two spoons used and there is NO SWITCH of any kind in the above routine. Both spoons can be immediately examined.
This manuscript is full of early Mann/Knight metal bending history and contains techniques only previously revealed in a now out of print joint Mann/Knight publication. This routine and handling has been highly acclaimed by those who have read it. It continues to be one of Knight's best selling releases.

Nosferatu Nail by Mephysto Magick Studio - Brad Toulouse
Effect
The performer displays an antique nail which he claims to be a relic from the cremated coffin of the dreaded vampire, Nosferatu. "A stake was driven through his heart, and the coffin lit ablaze," recite the magician, "but all that could ever be found among the ashes of the funeral pyre was this single nail." As it is held in the outstretched hand, the name Nosferatu is concentrated upon. "One can almost feel the nail becoming hot once again, and smell the burning flesh! A miasma of evil smoke can almost be imagined to be coming from the accursed nail!" As the performer speaks, and while holding the nail in the fingertips, it is seen to smoke and smolder! The performer drops the nail s if the heat from it has become unbearable. The nail can be handed out for immediate examination.

One of Devin Knight's most guarded secrets from his professional act is now being made available.
A truly long distance, hands-off mental card effect that seems totally impossible. An effect that not only baffles lay people but many magicians as well.
Performer invites anyone to help. He says he will try to subliminally force that person to choose a certain card. Magician proceeds to deal 10 or 12 cards face up on the table. He points out that most of these cards could be psychological choices. For example, one card may be the only club on the table. Another card may be the only odd value, another may be the only red court card, etc. You tell the spectator you will try to make him take a certain card while you are 15 to 20 feet away, with your back turned!
You walk to the other side of the room or stage and turn your back to the spectator. You instruct them to look over the cards and remove one. There is no funny counting, the cards are face up on the table and he just removes any one he likes. The spectator then covers the remaining cards so they can't be seen. This is all done while your back is turned. The person then covers his FREELY chosen card with his hand concealing it from view.
While still across the room, the magician picks up a magic marker and writes something on a piece of cardboard and sets it aside. You then proceed to tell the person what card you tried to influence them to take and WHY they decided on it. Only then does the spectator show the card they chose. It is the same one you wanted them to pick! Finally for a kicker finish, the cardboard is turned around and the card the person chose is written on it in large letters!
POSTIVELY NO MARKED CARDS ARE USED. NO FORCES OF ANY KIND. NO RESTRICTIONS OF ANY KIND

Antigravitron - Astor's Sealed Miracle No. 1
Effect
The magician hands a large metal ring (of approx. 18"/ 45cm in diameter) to the audience for inspection. His hands are empty. A spectator puts an object of his choice on the table. Holding the ring with both hands, the performer moves it over the object (Fig.1), and then lifts the ring. As the ring is lifted, the object is lifted along with it, floating in the centre of the ring (Fig.2). The magician can turn the ring in any direction he wishes; holding it by his mere fingertips, he can even turn the ring around the object (Fig.3) - the object is floating freely in the air.
The performer explains that the ring is made of a special material capable of neutralizing gravity inside the ring, so that any object in the centre of the ring will float freely in the air. He then takes the ring back to the table, slowly lowering it along with the object and putting both on the table. The spectators may inspect all the objects.
But that's not all. The magician can immediately repeat the effect with any object at all (that doesn't weigh more than 2 lbs/ 1kg). He doesn't have to pick up or palm anything, he doesn't have to touch his body (no, there are no strings stretched across the room either!) or make any new preparations! A member of the audience simply puts any object on the table (a handkerchief, a banknote, a lighter, a pack of cigarettes, a candlestick with a burning candle, a burning petroleum lamp, anything). The magician takes the ring, moves it over the chosen object - and, just like before, it floats in the middle of the ring!
"Catalogue talk!" you might say, "That's just impossible!" "On the contrary", we say, "Of course it's possible. Astor performed this effect any number of times and totally amazed his audiences with it. And you might be even more amazed when we tell you:
The magician's hands are always empty! He doesn't pick up any aids, so he doesn't have to secretly put any away! He can float any object as often as he likes (and, of course, not only things borrowed from the audience, but also anything of his own, such as a large ball, a glass, a bottle with liquid - in other words, anything that isn't very heavy). The ring and the objects are completely unprepared, and can be examined at any time! No wires, ring pullers, magnets or that sort of thing! This effect can be performed before surrounding audiences, at a distance of 7 feet / 2m. No training required!
Can you imagine a better effect? We can't! You can use any larger ring for this effect and it can be of metal, wood, plastic or just about anything. Supravision - Astor's Miracle No. 2
A completely inexplicable mental effect. Is it real telepathy? It remains a mystery.
Effect
The medium (who could be your partner) is blindfolded by members of the audience in the following manner: First, two cotton-wool balls are put over his or her eyes and taped crosswise with sticking plaster. Then the eyes are further firmly blindfolded with a piece of cloth, and a second, large cloth is placed over the head. It is not a trick blindfold! The medium really can't see anything!
After this is done, two members (any!) of the audience lead the medium out of the hall and make sure that he or she is completely unaware of the goings-on in the hall.
You now hand somebody in the audience a simple wooden box and six silk scarves of different colors and tell him or her to choose a scarf, put it into the box, padlock the box and put the other scarves into his/her pocket. You now take a seat in the auditorium and sit motionless. You may also be led out of the hall, so as to avoid any contact with the medium at all. Brought back into the hall, the medium takes the box in his or her hand and immediately tells which scarf is locked in it!
Instead of silk scarves, it may be any objects at all, such as playing cards, dice of different colors, different coins borrowed from audience members, etc.! Also, the number of objects is not limited to six, but can even be higher.

Really Warped by Michael Maxwell
The Ultimate Card Warp!
Easy To Do! Special Cards Included!
Card Warp is one of the all-time classics of card magic. In essence, a card turns inside-out - half face, half back. Normally, the card is torn in half and left for the spectators to examine, and possibly reconstruct how it's done. Michael Maxwell's Really Warped takes the effect into another dimension!
Here's what happens: A card is selected and signed by both you and a spectator, one signature on the face and one on the back. A borrowed dollar bill is then folded in half and the signed card is slid inside. Now, with no funny moves at all, you push the card through the bill and it turns inside-out - the face visibly changes into the back - and the signatures are in view the entire time! The change is repeated as many times as you wish; you can even push the card only half-way through, showing a face and a back at the same time!
It's a stunning effect and, best of all, it's easy to do. Now for the coup de grace; the card is given out as a souvenir - still half face and half back, and still with both signatures. It's the ultimate give-a-way!

Major Arcana by Brad Toulouse & Mephysto Magick Studio
This is an outstanding Mentalism trick that fools all who see it!
Effect
The performer removes from his pocket a small velvet pouch. Explaining that all events in life occur due to some "choice or chance" a demonstration of this phenomenon begins. From the pouch is removed a small "casting ring" as well as three dice. The performer asks the spectator to attempt to cast the dice in the ring. The dice are totaled. Let's say the total is 11 (any number can be arrived at; the dice are not gimmicked in any manner). This, explains the performer, is an example of chance.
Now an example of choice takes place; the spectator is simply asked to select either the number 1, 2, or 3. Let's say 3 is selected. The two numbers selected by choice and chance are added (in this case 11 plus 3, the total is 14). From the pouch a piece of parchment is removed and handed to the spectator to read. It contains information on the 21 cards which make up the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Card number 14 (in this case the card entitled "Temperance") is read aloud to see if its characteristics apply to the spectator!
A packet of Tarot Cards is removed from the pouch. The performer notes that although choice and chance do come into play, the forces of magick can also exert a strong influence. As the cards are spread, only one card is seen to be face down in the middle of the pack. It is turned over and found to be the card number fourteen... TEMPERENCE!
Note: The chosen card is freely selected by the spectator! A different card can be chosen each time with the same amazing results! The chosen card is the only one found reversed in the Tarot pack! The effect resets almost instantly, making it ideal for walk around performers!

Autobend Silverware by Devin Knight and Al Mann
Al Mann & Devin Knight were some of the early originators of self bending spoon techniques. This is the REAL work on self-bending spoons developed jointly by Al Mann and Devin Knight during the mid 80s.
You get the exact method used by Devin in newspaper office thru out the years to garner front page publicity. Show two spoons, one in each hand. The spectator is given a choice of either the stem or bowl of one of the spoons. Which ever he chooses (no force) that part of the spoon bends forward in a slow spooky manner.
Now the spoon in the other hand starts to visibly bend and is dropped into the spectator's hand WHILE STILL BENDING for complete examination without any switch.
The second spoon then becomes rubbery and flops around like loose rubber. Suddenly the rubbery spoons breaks in half and falls into the person's hand for examination.
Only two spoons used and there is NO SWITCH of any kind in the above routine. Both spoons can be immediately examined.
This manuscript is full of early Mann/Knight metal bending history and contains techniques only previously revealed in a now out of print joint Mann/Knight publication. Card Warp is one of the all-time classics of card magic. In essence, a card turns inside-out - half face, half back. Normally, the card is torn in half and left for the spectators to examine, and possibly reconstruct how it's done. Michael Maxwell's Really Warped takes the effect into another dimension!
Here's what happens: A card is selected and signed by both you and a spectator, one signature on the face and one on the back. A borrowed dollar bill is then folded in half and the signed card is slid inside. Now, with no funny moves at all, you push the card through the bill and it turns inside-out - the face visibly changes into the back - and the signatures are in view the entire time! The change is repeated as many times as you wish; you can even push the card only half-way through, showing a face and a back at the same time!
It's a stunning effect and, best of all, it's easy to do. Now for the coup de grace; the card is given out as a souvenir - still half face and half back, and still with both signatures. It's the ultimate give-a-way!

This is an outstanding Mentalism trick that fools all who see it!
Effect
The performer removes from his pocket a small velvet pouch. Explaining that all events in life occur due to some "choice or chance" a demonstration of this phenomenon begins. From the pouch is removed a small "casting ring" as well as three dice. The performer asks the spectator to attempt to cast the dice in the ring. The dice are totaled. Let's say the total is 11 (any number can be arrived at; the dice are not gimmicked in any manner). This, explains the performer, is an example of chance.
Now an example of choice takes place; the spectator is simply asked to select either the number 1, 2, or 3. Let's say 3 is selected. The two numbers selected by choice and chance are added (in this case 11 plus 3, the total is 14). From the pouch a piece of parchment is removed and handed to the spectator to read. It contains information on the 21 cards which make up the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Card number 14 (in this case the card entitled "Temperance") is read aloud to see if its characteristics apply to the spectator!
A packet of Tarot Cards is removed from the pouch. The performer notes that although choice and chance do come into play, the forces of magick can also exert a strong influence. As the cards are spread, only one card is seen to be face down in the middle of the pack. It is turned over and found to be the card number fourteen... TEMPERENCE!
Note: The chosen card is freely selected by the spectator! A different card can be chosen each time with the same amazing results! The chosen card is the only one found reversed in the Tarot pack! The effect resets almost instantly, making it ideal for walk around performers!

Autobend Silverware by Devin Knight and Al Mann
Al Mann & Devin Knight were some of the early originators of self bending spoon techniques. This is the REAL work on self-bending spoons developed jointly by Al Mann and Devin Knight during the mid 80s.
You get the exact method used by Devin in newspaper office thru out the years to garner front page publicity. Show two spoons, one in each hand. The spectator is given a choice of either the stem or bowl of one of the spoons. Which ever he chooses (no force) that part of the spoon bends forward in a slow spooky manner.
Now the spoon in the other hand starts to visibly bend and is dropped into the spectator's hand WHILE STILL BENDING for complete examination without any switch.
The second spoon then becomes rubbery and flops around like loose rubber. Suddenly the rubbery spoons breaks in half and falls into the person's hand for examination.
Only two spoons used and there is NO SWITCH of any kind in the above routine. Both spoons can be immediately examined.
This manuscript is full of early Mann/Knight metal bending history and contains techniques only previously revealed in a now out of print joint Mann/Knight publication. This routine and handling has been highly acclaimed by those who have read it. It continues to be one of Knight's best selling releases.
