Title: Somebody Pls Amaze Me!
muscleaxl - September 18, 2006 05:31 AM (GMT)
Been feeling a bit jaded for the past few weeks about my magic. Haven't been practising any new tricks or moves. Been showing the same stuff over and over again to people, even I got bored from seeing my own tricks. I thought i would never be amazed again, especially cards.
But after watching Uncle Bob Chua on saturday, I realized there is HOPE!! There are still things to get me excited!! I felt so refreshed about magic again!!
I wonder how many of you ever felt this way before, as in you felt you've reached a plateau in your magic, you felt you have know everything there's to know (the DLs, the Palm*, the various Colour Changes etc...), the only thing left is to practice the same old things.

I've heard of very accomplished magicians who upon seeing a trick that amazes them, do not want to know the secret as they want to preserve the feeling of being amazed by magic which disappear as they become great magicians..
However, maybe its because i am still beginner. I've never felt bored for magic; at least so far. Every other time, i still get amazed -- sometimes by the effect itself, sometimes by the presentation.
I think there's a whole world of things in Magic which, just like any subject, is virtually endless. Everytime when i think i already know it, there will be new things to absorb to assimilate..
I quote an old chinese saying: 学海无涯 !!

There is a few times i have this kind of feelings, but i always come back to forums la, or sites to look out for videos, or outside, people performing, i observes, most of the time, no matter whether they are really bad or really good in their acts, i will relate them into me, see where i can improve using what i saw in them. From there, even though i using back all the same tricks, but i have several ways to run around in the tricks to make it wide ranged.

I kinda treat magic as my studies - i do it when i like it and i force myself do it when i'm bored or losing interest. i pretend that i got exams for it lol!

even if you're master at cards, a cups and balls magician can still floor you badly... magic is something profound, and there is no limit to the amount of knowledge you can aquire in magic, even if you master all the sleights from encyclopedia of cards sleights there will still be new sleights being created by magicians and they can amaze you.

If you are bored by card magic, you have seen too little. I cannot imagine anyone reaching a plateau. It would be more acceptable if someone say they are DROWNED. In fact, i see at least one new thing every day, if not every week. But perhaps this is only what i feel.

Very interesting view.. Sometimes I'm also too tired to learn anything new, and I keep practising the same sleights that are already mastered. And because of that, it's probably the reason why I get bored at magic sometimes, mainly because there isnt anything NEW to do/practise and too lazy to learn anything NEW..
But the moment I got the mood to pop in a DVD to watch or read a book/manuscript, I'm bound to have that "interest" in magic once again, at least for a week or 2. :!!:

Haha, that reminds me that i got tons of DVDs haven watch, believe me, i haven watch any of them!!!

Yea its like that.. However, even you've watch a video once before, watch it AGAIN (like after sometime), and you'll definitely learn something NEW.. Then, you'll wondering how you could missed that out the first time when you watched the video.

Yes... Bob Chua's magic is amazing... So Axl, I totally understand why you were so bowled over by his close up magic. The things he does with cards are just AWESOME. I've meet many skilled cardicians but Bob Chua's still my favourite ^_^ Those who've had the chance to watch him perform would agree with me, he doesn't like to jam with many magicians though, so consider yourself lucky if he's shared his things with you!

Every now and then, Visions of Wonders never fails to perk me up with the amazment of magic.

It's pretty much inevitable for a magician to get "bored" once in a while. However, reading a good book or watching a strong performance should get them going again.
Of course, something constructive that you could do would be to invent your own routine using the sleights you've grown oh-so-bored of. Haha~
(Hmm, Bob Chua's magic made me feel like practising more. But he told me to study hard... )

Only you decide where your uphills, plateaus and downhills are.
