Title: Hot Leads Anyone?
Ning - September 13, 2004 09:53 AM (GMT)
Hey people... what do you think of Hot Leads from Penguin Magic? The trailer looked AWESOME! anyone has any reviews to share? I was @ magic castle the other day and Solomon was advising me to go for Afterburn instead (but that much more expensive). Comments anybody? ;-) Thanks and hope to hear from u soon!
william_wwong - September 13, 2004 03:00 PM (GMT)
I though Afterburn is the former name of Hot Leads...
ren8585 - September 13, 2004 03:42 PM (GMT)
hot leads is the improved version of aftherburn
Aloy - September 13, 2004 07:36 PM (GMT)
I was very very tempted to get it before coz i thought it would be a impression leaving way to give out a business card.
Magic Castle sells it for a really high price thou, you might wanna consider ordering online.
But I'm in the IT line and i am questioning the wisdom of handing out cards to in a professional setting in that manner.
But if you are in a more "arty" line of work (eg. designer, marketing, artist, media, etc etc), it would definitely make your clients remember you for a long long time.
magi81 - September 14, 2004 12:42 AM (GMT)
Well, ermz..
i would not think it's best for handling out business card, cuz, it makes u looks silly..
no offense, unless u r in the trade of a magi, or mayb u r handling out b.cards in a pub, i feel HotLead will not be much used. Afterburn is hot lead's previous version as indicated by ren :)
my advise, if u r looking for gimmicks(that can be self learnt virtually without any skills), go for penguinmagic, but if u r looking for vids/gimmicks(that require some skills to master it), go for magic castle, cuz the pplz at magiccastle will teach u, but penguinmagic only provides u a video to follow...:)
ren8585 - September 14, 2004 01:06 AM (GMT)
actually u could produce a card using it... force a card on a spectator tear the pip and switch it(of course u cant sign it),make the card vanish from the deck in anyway u want(double side tape or palm it before u ask them shuffle) and produce the card which is already in the "hotleads holder" with the pip the spectator is holding.anyway the tear matches and the spectator would really think its thier card.Just an idea

Hi fellas :-)
Wow, thanks for the swift replies! To answer you, Hot Leads is yes, supposed to be the new n improved Afterburn. it's not just a name change because the construction's pretty different too (hint: afterburn needs flash paper, hot leads does not).
I was toying with the idea and it's interesting to read your opinons and comments *grin* I guess, besides being pricey in itself, it's probably going to be rather expensive too, to upkeep all this pyro products :-(
still, the penguin video sure looked cool! haha... thanks for your 2cents worth! :-D
jim - September 21, 2004 09:15 PM (GMT)
I'm selling mine for 40% off!
Not a bad effect but no chance to use it often. Rather sale it to others who wants it.
Plse PM me asap if yu are interested.
makanmonkey - September 25, 2004 04:54 AM (GMT)
I watched the penguin vid for Hot Leads last yr i think... was captivated by that gal in the baseball cap haha just thot I'd share that...
Chris.
yujie - September 25, 2004 06:14 AM (GMT)
hahahaa.........that's sharp observation, chris....
anyway, saw Ning performed it, and i must say that it is an impressive way to hand out your name card. a good buy indeed.
Pseudo - September 25, 2004 07:06 AM (GMT)
I'm considering for this trick. Seems cool.
Can you guys tell me more about it? Can I use a borrowed card?
makanmonkey - September 25, 2004 11:43 AM (GMT)
Pseudo... actually it's the wallet that's gimmicked, based on my knowledge on how it works (which is pieced together and not full) any card can be used, but preferbly if it doesn't have a plastic coating coz it might melt (tho the fire doesn't burn very long). You might want to try on different cards once u do get the gimmick.
Me, I'm figuring a way how to build one haha low budget, i think i got the soaking stage down pat, now it's just the ignition stage... flash paper is too exp, flint sparks are too troublesome to operate and the piezo sparking thingy doesn't seem to ignite very well...
btw Ning... is the smell from the fuel strong?
Chris.
Ning - September 26, 2004 06:14 AM (GMT)
Ugh... jim you were selling yours @ 40% off? damn... i'd been so busy lately i hadnt been on the fourm :-P got anything else in your stash you wanna let go off?
anyways... i got mine delivered from penguin just this friday... 2 days ago and i love my new toy already. so far have demo-ed on yujie and morphine yesterday <grin>
chris, the smell IS strong! it still lingers around so it's much better if you pass the cartds outside, not inside an air-con environment (so, no restaurants or small meeting rooms) and man... when the cardsa are 'fresh' the flames are HUGE! i've also prepared them in the morning, they still ignite at night but it's small flames on the surface... still cool to people.
Just make sure you check your angles so people dont glimpse the 'secret' ;-)
Ning - September 26, 2004 06:16 AM (GMT)
oh yeah, Pseudo, you need to prep your name cards befpre that, so you take them out from that special wallet. uhmmm... i much prefer hot leads to after burn cos you dont need to purchase exensive flash paper- hassle free! ;-)
if jim's one is still available at half price, i think it's worth grabbing... you'll definately WOW everyone you pass your cards to! <grin>

My jaw nearly hit the floor when she tried to passed me her burning namecard
Ning - September 26, 2004 06:27 AM (GMT)
LOL... Aloy, you looked so damn cute when I did that. Your expression made me feel this expensive purchase was really worth it ;-)

wah you guys go out never call me along :(
makanmonkey - September 27, 2004 05:56 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... do i sense some attraction here? haha...
Ning... actually if i had more time i think i can actually design sthg that preps the cards as they are pulled out... but not knowing how the wallet fully works I'll prolly have to see how the ignition is accomplished. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the nxt meeting!
I've also been thinking abt the fuel... i was wondering whether possible to substitute for another type, but i think not coz for it to burn off fast enough to not damage the card, it has to be volatile... so it'll have to b done only in open areas as u said =( imagine if can use in like a restaurant or what then 1.) sure make an impression on ur clients/boss/whoever 2.) at the same time set off the sprinklers!
Chris.
Ning - September 27, 2004 06:11 AM (GMT)
LOL... it was a "chance" meeting lah. in other words, just happened to be in the same area (and SG also not very the big)... nothing funky going on here *g*
I guess you can do hot leads in a pub, but not a restaurant because of obvious reasons. LOL... i don't think the flames are leathal enough to set off the water sprinklers but i didn't take any chances (now you understand Yujie, why I keep suggesting we don't do it inside Lot 1 mall) LOL...
It's a fun "toy" but yeah, many parts can be improved. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a way to make it yourself ;-) Aloy! When's the next meeting gonna be already?
makanmonkey - September 28, 2004 09:10 AM (GMT)
Ning... i think so too... i should be working on it in the hols
Ning - September 28, 2004 09:15 AM (GMT)

i made some cheap... have a friend who's a printer. if u want to make some, let me know. will pass u his contact.
the original hot leads comes with one name card from jim pace's company. you can use any name cards but the more expensive ones that are glossy/ embossed may have some problems. :ph43r:

Winder - October 16, 2004 02:32 PM (GMT)
The last time i walk the whole of beach road just to find a cheap name card dealer and he said my design is too colorful and it might be too expensive. I spent 1 hour walking around like a fool ^_^. Some time i could be a clown ~
Ning - October 17, 2004 12:50 PM (GMT)
You can keep the cards thre for a couple of hours but not really recommended to go past 4 hours cos by thhen well, the effect isn't thhat grand if ya know what i mean  Let's say... tthe fesher the juice, the biger the flames!!!
Hmmm, Winder, you can always try out my printer friend... according to him, he printts digital so the price is pretty much fixed be it just 1C, 2C or full color ;)
illusionist - October 17, 2004 12:59 PM (GMT)
So normally how many name card you prepare in the wallet??? Where you place all the prepare name card in the plastice holder ot the opposite one???? <_<
GordonLi - October 17, 2004 01:22 PM (GMT)

Jim Pace suggested 10 biz cards but I'd recommend no more than 8 or you'd have difficulty pulling it out. The rest may just drag out when you pull one one and do a FLOORish at your feet :P Not very impressive in front of clients

Well gordie... Jason's a designer too, so he can probably work outt something for you or improve on your design if you want but it'd be prudent to give him a call first and check out other printers for rates ;) Have fun!
