A well-deserved congrats goes out to Shawn the 'Magic Dude' Chua for his first place win at the IBM Parlour comp!
It was a great example of a polished competition-designed act which blended technique, character, presentation and structure.
Kudos goes out to the efforts from the other competitors! Nique Tan did a great job as a guest performer and blew the audience away with his 'Flurious' finale! The emcee got it wrong when he said Nique was one of the best sleight of hand magicians in the country.... he is the best!
It was also a fantastic turnout for an IBM Ring 115 event and thanks for all the support from SMC members! Hope it was a treat for you.

Many thanks to Magicdow for helping SMC guys get into the events.
Really enjoyed myself for the Charles Gauci Lecture and also the IBM Parlour Competition. What a weekend. Hehe.
Really loved Charles Gauci's act. His presentation and style is really charming.
Cheers out loud for all the IBM Parlour Competition competitors too.
Great work guys~ Really loved all the acts.
But.. being a sucker for Derren Brown-ish acts. My favourite is still Nique Tan-da-guest-performer. The voodoo routine really rox, solves the "scary" move problem i keep encountering, can i steal it? Hehehe. :P (But like jcsum said, really really great sleight of hand too.)
Magicdow - October 16, 2006 01:52 AM (GMT)
Congrats to the winners and those who participated. Everyone is a winner.
I apologise for not being able to introduce myself to those who attended the competition as I was at the backstage helping out. Hope you guys enjoyed it.
The Orientalist - October 16, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
Hi Bernard,
Thanks for helping us out at the backstage. You are very important to the panticipants. Without your help, we can't get our table and props on the stage. Without you, we cannot begin our shows.
Hope to come back again next year!
AhLiShuFi - October 16, 2006 07:24 AM (GMT)
Yup, bernard has been a great guy! One man show everything, music dj, stage setting supervisor,.... basically everything that's happening backstage arh. He's one hell of a guy!!! Thanks for everything bro. Too bad I was abit "gan cheong" that day. Didn't perform well... =(
Navarrone - October 16, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
I would say, Wow!
I really enjoyed the performances by all the competitors. This was really an eye-opener for me as this is my first time attending a magic competition, and I sure enjoyed it. The performances were great, it was certainly worth the trip. And of course, it all ended with Shawn Chua being the IBM Parlour Magic Competition Champion!
It was certainly an act worth its place, which filled the room with both laughter and amusement. Not only did he made the people watching feel comfortable, he sure did amazed and amused many of us. I personally enjoyed it very much, and there should be no doubt about it. He really deserved it! Congrats Shawn!
The other performers were great too, with pambudi's metalism act featuring the few habits of local singaporeans, haha. Of course not forgetting people like Andy Ng, Shufi, Kien Meng, Daisy and Enrico. Just a pity that Enrico's act went abit overtime and stuffs. I personally like Andy's performance too, and also glad to see Shufi's improvement from the video I saw that happened in CCF. Guest performer Nique Tan's presentation of the voodoo touches thing was great too, along with his coins, I'll take jcsum's words.
Overall, really glad that i attended this magic competition, and of course, Thanks to IBM!
Lefty - October 16, 2006 02:38 PM (GMT)
I like Shufi Parasol act, its like hiding thousands of parasol in under his coat ahhahahaha...
Andy act was really cool, i always think that oriental acts are boring and slow and dead, but Andy prove me wrong, his act was really fantastic on that night!!! Especially the last linknig ring move, ownage man...
The other performer were great too, had lotsa fun that night, :)
AhLiShuFi - October 16, 2006 02:50 PM (GMT)
Glad you enjoyed the parasol act. Looks like noone like my card manipulation act.... boohoo.... I actually practiced like hell for it. One of my worst run. My rehearsals were much better, sadly. Stupid shaky hands! And... my card fountain did not work when i need it!!!! argh! Murphy's Law. Things go wrong when u least expect it.
For those, interested to watch my practice video clip, can PM me. Maybe I can inspire you in one way or another. Haha. I'll be back next year!
Sherman - October 17, 2006 04:28 PM (GMT)
Don't take it too hard Shufi. I admired your courage because you tackled, in my opinion one of the hardest genre of magic. (For those who wasnt there that genre is card manipultaion). I hope you don't give up and continue to perfect that act.
Anyway, for the benefit of those who were not able to attend the competition. Here is a brief summary on the top 3 performers that night.
The Champion: Shawn Chua the magic dude.
Shawn Chua managed to capture the audience with his wacky personality and unique style of comedy magic. He performed stuff like " Appearance of giant bowling pin & bowling ball" , worked our funny bone with his "Linking barb wire", "Card to impossible location" and my personal favourite was "Egg in beer bottle". That one way just crazy. My eyes literally popped out. Watching his act made me realize the importance of routining and structure. Every individual effect he did blended in nicely.
2nd place : Kian Ming
Entertained the crowd with stuff like, "Appearance of wine bottle & glass", "Floating table", "Paper rose to real rose". What i liked about Kian's act was his ability to blend his effects with music. Something i have been working on and believe me that its not easy.
3rd place: Pambudi
Pam has never failed to entertain me with his mentalism acts and he did not fail to deliver too that evening. He did a 4D number prediction and a horse racing prediction with alittle twist. Very entertaining.
Overall, i very good competition and i hope from my summary, i made some people regret not attending it. :)
The Orientalist - October 18, 2006 03:01 AM (GMT)
Hi Lefty,
Thanks for the compliment. At least you have enjoyed my oriental act.
You have really make my day!
Finally I have people watching the IBM Competition and have enjoyed Oriental Magic. Hopefully, the rest watching the competition have enjoyed my oriental act too!
I really wish to thanks everyone that attended the IBM competition and make this event a successful one.
Thank you to all of you watching the competition!!!
MagicalPam - October 18, 2006 05:45 AM (GMT)
Hi all,
Thanks for all your support.
I am in Europe again this week.
Anyway, the IBM competition was great.
It is getting better and better.
I have done my best. I got the 3rd price, that was already great achievement considering the short preparation that I have.
Anyway, it was great to compete in the same stage with Shawn and Mr Bottle.
Thanks again and I will be back to singapore next week.
Pam
PS>
I received already a lot of emails asking when I will release the 4D prediction and horse-racing prediction.
My apologize, the answer is NO, I wont release them.
Thanks anyway and I am glad that you appreciate.
