REVIEW BY NING of THE LITTLE MAGIC SHOP Jim Cellini: Street Magic Lecture - Zurich 2005 review
Here's what you get in this DVD:
More than one and a half hours of generous tips and expert advice from veteran magician, Cellini, who shares his own personal professional street magic act and lectures extensively on proper audience management, plus the ins & outs of what works and doesn't, besides an indepth teach-in of his performances and further discussions about magic and more.
Now this is what's great about it:Cellini, one of my most respected professional magicians, has this wonderful unassuming air about him but yet his magic is so strong. The famous disciple of Tony Slydini (yes, THE Slydini), Cellini has toured the world and performed extensively as a street magician. It's fantastic when veterans with such wonderful knowledge share what they know and have learnt through their personal experiences with serious students of the craft.
Anyways. This DVD is a definite must-have for those interested in taking their street performances to the next level. If you're a magician thinking of being a street performer, this is for you! Cellini highlights questions commonly faced by many, such as...
how do you get started? What do you do when someone walks through the show or leaves during a performance? How do you cover a mistake or deal with the lack of applause? Cellini expans on the BIG THREE, which is essentially:
Stop them. Make them stay. Make them pay. B) Cellini teaches how to use elements that grab attention, capture the ear, and attract the eye. All very handy stuff!! He makes pointers about pitches (before and after the show)... which is essential because no one should work for free if you're performing to a crowd! Plus he merticulously goes through the importance of the magician's costume and the tools of our trade. There are many handy tips we could all learn with regards to audience management as well.
Most of us may have problems breaking the ice and getting a crowd to perform for... Cellini teaches his personal method which brings people to you and you don't even have to say a word for that to happen! There's a portion on magic in a restaurant setting as well, and Cellini gives a throughout breakdown on the important bits like topits, himber tables, jackets with pockets, and the other essentials.
This is not a DVD that's marketed as 'cool' by the use of snazzy shots and funky editing. What this DVD is, is simply a very good video of Cellini's Zurich lecture a year ago where he teaches routines after a full performance, PLUS gives advice on being a better magician. With more than 40 years of experience under his belt, this guy is an authority on the subject
So, in a nutshell:If you're serious about performing for the street, or busking for money, or learning solid parlour effects... this would be for you :) Cellini has a very neat cigarette manipulation act where he vanishing and produces cigerettes and even eats them. Smoke puffs from his mouth when he coughs, and it's very visual! His patter is entertaining, and certainly gives a good spin of good old classics like the prof's nightmare & cups and balls (his final load is FLAWLESS!).
Cellini shared that Slydini said, "Simplicity is the key to all great magic." ^_^ Well, it's what exactly this DVD is... it is effectively simple and easy to follow, but it certainly packs a punch. Well recommended!!!
Cheers,
Ning
