REVIEW BY NING of THE LITTLE MAGIC SHOP Ever So Sleightly by Paul Squires
Here's what you get: This is an hour long performance-only DVD featuring many magicians in the UK, a very nicely made documentary by filmmaker/ musician/ magician Paul Squires. He gives a zany insight on the English magic scene, traveling to various part of England to interview many high profile performers, who also give their advice and professional tips, besides sharing intimate details as to what got them started in magic, etc.
There are several performances featured but this is not a teach-in video, so just appreciate it as a cleverly done high quality video documentary with funky animations, upbeat music (with scratching!), and interesting personalities!
Magicians like Richard Sanders, Paul Gordon, Simon Lovell, Wayne Dobson, Mick Dow, Ben Williams, Paul Zenon, Jay Scott Berry, Ray & Joe Pasquale and many more magicians appear in this DVD :)
Now this is what's great about it:If you're a culture vulture, if you like to find out how the magic circles are like in other places, this is a DVD you'd like. It's gives a glimpse of the magicians, the magic, the magazines, the radio stations (I kid you not, do a google for Radio Magic, they have podcasts!) and more. UK magicians seem like an easy going and fun bunch, with some like Lovell and Pasquale almost borderline crazy  They give advise to young inspiring magicians on performance tips, learning sources/ materials, etc. and I enjoyed the bits where some of them performed for the camera.
I'm sure some of you may find some names familiar... take for instance, Paul Zenon, the UK magician who also had his series of street magic TV shows before Criss Angel. And there's Wayne Dobson, the gentle magician who's wheelchair bound but his magic still amazes, and there's also Simon Lovell who is a table hopping whiz!
So, in a nutshell:This is a refreshing DVD that shows you how magic is really like in England, it's a good documentary and Paul Squires has done a fantastic job with the entire project... coming from the media industry, I totally appreciate his video editing skills and how everything is so professionally put together :) There are cute bits in the bonus section of the DVD too, and wicked commentary if you chose to select it when you play the video. If you're interested in people and want to see more than just tricks, Ever So Sleightly makes an interesting choice!
Cheers,
Ning ^_^
