Title: Just Saying Hello... :p
Description: A brief hello to everyone here... ;)

Shade - November 22, 2004 12:53 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone,

Just joined the forum and I look forward to getting to know everyone soon... ;)

Just some basic background info about me -

I'm 28, teaching full time in a secondary school (basically working my nuts off) and I'm a magic enthusiast like everyone else here... (hopefully).

Cheers,
Shade

Welcome to the forum Sir :P, So which school are you teaching in and what subject are you teaching ?

Moondust - November 22, 2004 02:01 PM (GMT)
Hi, and welcome!

Wow, an enthusiast who's a school teacher. That sure works well with your popularity, doesn't it? Students all over the school will probably be too afraid to lie if you do some good mentalist effects!

ren8585 - November 22, 2004 02:33 PM (GMT)
lmfao ... he might be teaching one of the members in here... wonder what would it be like lol... a student teaching a teacher magic... sounds strange to me haha

TheMaestro - November 22, 2004 03:29 PM (GMT)
Think it's a good idea to have magic as a CCA?

Winder - November 22, 2004 03:33 PM (GMT)
Wrong, having magic as a CCA is bad. Cause i have seen this things happen before, students just join with no interests, go there play poker games and just know the secret. Can't be bothered to put effort in their presentation and time practicing, sometime their teacher invite me over to be their guest. I feel disgusted cause i see them with no INTERESTs at all, only for 2 or 3 surrounding the teacher and keep practicing on and on.

80 Members and lets say 20 Per session only got 3 members have that interests, the rest are just going there to get CCA points and to know magic works.

Sad to say, after the last 2 invitation i never been there again :( I won't name the school for reputation reasons :)

ren8585 - November 22, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)
wtf? magic for CCA?that dosent make any sense =.=!

Moondust - November 22, 2004 04:33 PM (GMT)
That'll be fun! Don't think they'll learn tricks with cigarettes though :D

Check out my article in the Theories and Philosophies section titled "The Magical Initiation." It's for would-be magicians. ;)

Welcome to the forum Shade.

You wouldn't happen to be a teacher that frequents Steven's Magic Supreme that buys tricks for some of your students would you?
If you are, i think you are awesome mate. Honestly.
If you are not, welcome to the forum anyways B)

Cheers

Yah I was wondering it had actually been tried and how it turned out.

It seems that in that case there was no attempt to filter out those with no interest. Not sure how well it'll work even if that were done though.

I think maybe they should just enrol students who have a basic knowledge of magic, like you know, ask them to perform a simple trick and interview them to justify how genuine their interests are first before they start. Then form a ranking system. In order to eliminate unlawful or dishonest use of card sleights for immoral gambling purposes, only those students who are further up the hierachy are entitled to learn them.

And any students found intentionally breaking the magician's code will be discharged from participation and lose any accumulated CCA points.

If all these terms are made clear before participations, the unsincere will find it unreasonable and restrictive. There's a higher chance that those with genuine interest will stay and learn their craft. The only setback that I forsee will be a lack of participation due to adolescent rebellious streaks and immature or incorrect mindsets.

I don't mind sharing that information but not online on an open forum... I would hate for somebody to come by from my school and I might get fired if my boss doesn't like it... haha

That's so cool. How I wish I had a teacher like that back in school days. I would get screwed for bringing cards to school because playing cards have always been stereotyped as tools of the trade for compulsive gamblers.

I think you still would if you brought cards to school nowadays, just maybe less so

I guess schools have become more liberalised these days. Corporal punishment is non-existent, student rebellion is rampant.

In my early days of magic, teachers still practise rapping the knuckles with the 30cm wooden ruler!

Depends on what you consider good these days... ;P I'm not a flourisher; I like subtle handling, focusing on sleights.
