Title: Magnets
Description: Where can I get them?

Kazekage - November 13, 2006 12:03 PM (GMT)
Hi guys!

I'm back ^_^

Anyways, I'm looking for a button magnet that is strong enough to attract another magnet through a wooden board roughly about 1 inch thick.
The magnet I'm looking for is preferably a 1-3cm in diameter button magnet, the thinner the better.

I tried a lot of shops but none seem to have it.
All I get are whiteboard magnets -_-"

Any of you know from which local hardware store or maybe stationary shop I can get them?

Thanks in advance guys! ^_^

I tried looking for similar magnets in Singapore but could not find them except those standard ones sold in magic shops. I did find some supermagnets that are used for science experiments at some educational shops, but they were too weak and the wrong shape and size.

I would stick to getting them off the internet if you have access to a credit card. ;)

Thanks Joel ^_^

I guess I'll check out the ones at the magic shops first to see if they work well for my little 'experiment'.

For everyone's info, You can only get the real super magnets through the dealers on yellow pages or website. (Like micro motors)

Because these things are not common, you cannot find them commonly in stores, and considering they are quite expensive (like 20 to 30 over for a magnet)

Try to search online, and you will have a good deal of it. And you be lucky that singapore really got sell. But most of these shops are at bras basah or industrial areas. But I am very certain that it exist in singapore.

As for how thin it goes, it really does affect the price, if i not wrong, a 2 mm thick super natural earth magnet cause like 50-70 per sheet, I did ask in the past for my FYP, but because of its cost, we took it out. And don't be surprised if it goes up to a few hundred.

FYI, my super motor (For Mini Robots) cost few hundred for each motor. So you can imagine how it will cost for a small and good things.

Better to get those with a nickel coating as supermagnets are very brittle without an exterior coating. Be aware that different super magnets have different strength ratings.

I understand that you can also get supermagnets from an old computer.

Hmm, not really brittle. Just that you shouldnt drop them. Most magnets are soft when they first arrived, so actually they wont break when you drop them. Why they are hard in the end is because of processing.

Anyway, you shouldnt drop them also because it simply cause it to lose its ability.

Ya, Computer have, but its hard to find them and unless you got an old computer that you want to ripped it off, or else, no point also. :)

seen the jewels sometime back.

Pretty expensive.

How strong are those supermagnets?
Can it be held in a closed fist and still have power to give enough attraction to a "magnet ring" so that it can be "felt"? *winks

joeltay81 - December 29, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
strong enough to create a warp imaged on ur computer screen within 3 feet.

LarryDK - December 29, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
Supermagnets are so strong that, because you are carrying it. Your other electronic devices are in damage. So you better get a electronic insulator for your devices.

get uberorbs.. they should be strong enough, and you can play with them when ur not using them for ur effects, i got mine thru one of the dealers here, forgot who though...
