I think this should be in the right section?

I've been wondering - how do you come up with original manipulation routine? Been thinking about this for a while already, since in manipulations, some things like production etc are rather fixed so somehow, some parts of the routines always seem to be reminiscent of someone else's routine..

Do pure rearrangement of other's sequence of the routine qualify as being original? I don't think so right?

Anyone help me out here?

well, if u copy and paste bits and pieces from a few ppl's act, i guess that's not original to some people. In any case, I think it's great for a start, not to copy someone's entire act, but probably choose what works for you and omitting out what don't.

But after being able to master all kinds of sleights there is to learn, and after numerous performances, I guess then it's time for you to sit, and plan out your routine from scratch. What I mean is, not merely putting the sleights together, one after the other, but rather try construct a theme and continuously try to develop it such that at the end of the day, the magic make sense.

Am i confusing you?

Ting!!! Ya, I agree with shufi about that. Looking at video of great manipulators, be it cards, dove or money. Most of the sleights are the same from any other rest of the magicians, but the theme and structure of your sleights into the routine makes the whole different.

I think the first up front idea is, what you want to show to the audience, the feeling you want them to develop, it is pure magic, or it is a act. I think once you have the up front idea of what you want to show, you develop the moves on how to show it out, like an act, how you going to act it out, and using the sleights to know to build into the effect. Pure magic, how you going to make it look impossible and mystery.

For me, the different between a pure magic and the act is that one, ends up everyone talking, how he do that? He can fly!! The second one, people will go, I love the way he make the rose appear for the lady, its so romantic. Ya, basically thats what i think about manipulation routines.
