chanzian - January 23, 2007 07:50 PM (GMT)
Hey guys i was browsing the E website and chanced upon this.
http://www.ellusionist.com/order/series1800/index.phpIt is very cool, looks amazing. Wondering if anyone has it and would like to leave a review?
Aloy - January 23, 2007 11:53 PM (GMT)
Tigers, Red pips, White pips, Vipers, Ghosts, Black Ghosts, mini Ghosts, Masters, Split Spades, Red cards, yellow cards, green cards, ...etc etc.
The number of useless hyped up decks produced by Ellusionist is not funny.
And when you think it simply cannot get worse, they came up with one more to prove you wrong.
A normal deck, that looks and feels like a "trick deck", and will be suspected to be a "trick deck", yet no gaff cards available for this. Not even double facers which you can use with Tally Hos and Bees and Aladdins.
But this one has got to be most extra useless of them all.
From their ad-copy:
| QUOTE |
| "At first I thought they were going to pretty much all have the same back design, but upon inspection the backs are different. They are all aged and cracked to different degrees" |
Wow. Fantastic. As if the "trick deck" look isn't enough. Now it's suspected as a very obviously marked deck as well. And casual inspection by the spec will convince them that it's a marked deck, good luck trying to tell them "no no...i swear! even thou all the backs are different, they don't mean anything". And the worst part is that it's not systematically marked either. Yay. All the heat, none of the benefits.
Usually I'm like "yeah, buy it if you want, but I dun think it's very good". But this one, Wow. You cannot do anything with it except to just look at it. You cannot even play poker with them because the backs are not even consistant!
Collector's item? Yeah right. Within 4 months E is going to come up with some new fancy deck, and this one is just gonna be another useless deck. But I really dunno how are they going to come up with a more useless deck than this. This is the white elephant of all playing cards.
0/50,000 stars. :!!: Avoid at all cost.
zOOm - January 24, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
i was abt to order it...but i don't think i will get it anymore
Lefty - January 24, 2007 03:53 AM (GMT)
My advice
If you have extra cash, buy 1 for fun, place one of the cards in your wallet as a prediction, or use it as killosal Killer, tell others that the cards has been there for ages, from the pervious user of the wallet.
Other than that, nothing much you can do about it with the lousy air cushion and the not similar backing.

That's pretty creative thinking. B)
But I think i would still rather take one of the millions of old cards I have lying around and stain it with used tea leaves so it looks AND FEELS old for a more authentic effect. Not to mention being vitually free as the old cards get thrown out usually anyways.
Icy - January 24, 2007 10:28 AM (GMT)
Aloy is right. Only the design is old. It has a new card quality feel to it so presenting it as an old deck or card is really not a good idea.
But I don't think all the past Ellusionist decks are useless (except for this one). Actually, if you really want to use those fancy decks you need an appropriate presentation (not necessarily verbal). Be more creative. But no doubt their use will be quite narrow. So for me, I wouldn't go through all the troubles. I will just stick with my blue backed tally-hos.
zOOm - January 24, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
or u can use this deck and disguise as singapore's version of tarco. walk around chinatown doing magic to ah peks...use it when doing to kids also can...say that the cards are passed down from grandfather. i know its kinda lame but thats the few uses i can think of for this deck

So the cards look old but when the audience touched the card they knew the cards are new >_<
I guess those who really like it can buy 1 for collection. And i 'm quite sure that deck would just sit in one corner and collect dust....for the next 100yrs -_- Guess by then they'll have a more vintage feel
chanzian - January 24, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
inconsistent backs is really going to be a problem. Can't even do DL with it. But i thought it looked kind of cool. useless nevertheless.
Thinking about it, it is quite a pity. i wouldn't mind having one deck jus to let it sit around, or i could bring it around and tell people that my grandfather gave it to me. But it's quite a waste of money.
LarryDK - January 25, 2007 01:29 AM (GMT)
I agree with Aloy for this one.. LOL!! Ghost deck is the last deck I got from Ellusionist. Then the rest of those decks, I just see see, nice ah, but wont get it. LOL!!
Don't want to waste money on such trivial stuffs but prefer to look around for good stuffs and invest in them.

Why not? Inconsistent back shouldn't prevent you from doing DLs, since it really is just the shell principle.

And in less than a month after the 1800s, the blue masters edition is just around the corner. There are also news of the shadow masters leaked. Well, for all those fancy deck collectors out there, get ready your credit card! Ellusionist will happily accept them. :D

Hi,
Someone I met during the 2006 meet for the impromptu magic nite at cafe actually started my collecting all sorts of playing cards, especially ones given free!
So if you guys get an extra and would like to trade brand new decks like ones from airlines / beer companies / soft drink companies etc, gove me a shout.. so we can expand collection as I usually get 2 of each (of pay for the 2nd one if I can get it free so I can trade)
Any one here with same interests?

I mean if you're doing a ACR, it doesn make sense if the back of the card is always different.
It's just like how you would prefer not to perform any tricks with a 2way backs.
Maybe the spec will not notice, but it jus makes me paranoid.
zOOm - January 27, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
bought it at magic hall today...actually the back of the card no doubt is different but i think specs cannot really tell the difference. Very well made deck. I bluff someone saying that i picked this up on the way amongst the grass then tried to rub the box on her...she actually flinched from it with disgust. Thats how realistic it is. IMO i don't think it will pose any problem doing ACR.

GordonLi - January 28, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
Frankly, I think that these cards are gross! I think the other E cards are much nicer. Who on earth would want people to genuinely think that he/she is using an old, stained deck?! Disgusting!
Icy - January 29, 2007 08:13 AM (GMT)
Well, if your into the bizzare, it might be an interesting deck.
TheSilentillusionist - January 30, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
Lucky I did not order it. But Ellusionist should also make the deck feel old. Which means it should not feel that smooth like a normal new bicycle deck.
LarryDK - January 31, 2007 01:17 AM (GMT)
Well, at the look of the cards.. You can cook up a story and says: "I got these cards from a tomb during a visit to india, and the guy sold to me for 2000 dollars, saying that the spirit of the tomb is inside the deck and once a while, the cards will move by itself, and I witness how the cards move without him touching the cards at all, seeing it as such a bizzare thing, of course I bought it to keep."
Of course they will be half believed, then you say: "I know its hard to believe, how about this, We try to see if the spirit is around and within the cards," Then perform a haunted deck routine.
Finally, 90% of the time they freak out and say "***", then you say: "Ya, I also think that its very creepy and evil to keep this deck of cards, you interested to buy it? I sell it to you cheap.." Half of the audience might be interested to buy and you can sell it for 1000 dollars. So the end of the story is that you made at least at 900 dollar profit!!!
Okie, the end line is getting an idea of what can the deck do, and not selling the deck for 1000 dollars because thats cheating.. LOL!! Better don't do that.

I just got my deck today. Still thinking of some 'stories' to incorporate the deck/cards into a routine.
zOOm - January 31, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)

Kinda far-fetched...
I think the only thing this deck has is the fact it has nothing worthy to be amazed about.
Since it's a brand new finish, it won't feel old... Which will just give another impression of "trick" decks, to the audience.
Unless, you could make it appear and disappear without letting the audience touch it...
Lefty - January 31, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
You pay money to buy this new old deck, in return people thinks that you are disgusting to use such old deck, plus you still have to waste time thinking of a patter of it..... Buy one and see see look look and out at your collection, if you got the spare cash, if not, dont waste your time.....
Broderick - February 5, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)

timo - February 6, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
If i am not wrong, the vintage deck is officially sold out on Ellusionist's website and there are very few copies of it left in singapore so for those who dont want to wait for like another 2 months or so, better get your hands on it soon.
makubex - February 7, 2007 07:26 AM (GMT)
But if you are a deck collector . I think you should get one . For magicians , It can act to you as a whole deck of gaffs . But one design only . You can use it like for a trick : pick a card . put it back in the deck . my ancestors are also magicians and they predicted your card 40 years ago when they were alive . To prove to you , I am going to dig into the soil this grass patch or whatever . Then the magician pull out from the card the audience card but instead of the new bicycle card . It is the vintage series 1800 card .
( just some ideas ) be more creative and you might be using this vintage deck to scare people :) MAGIC AND SCARING PEOPLE SOMETIMES ARE QUITE EXPENSIVE !!!

I was thinking of getting one too, but looking at the reviews, maybe not.

I'm not sure if it grosses people out but after i showed the deck to a few of my friends, they were quite amazed at the artwork. Initially their reaction was like, "WTF u got such an old deck?" But when i let them see it closer, they were so absorbed in examining the deck. I didnt do a trick for them but if i were to do one, i probably wouldnt show the whole deck. Isolating a card or the cards itself would be better in a trick than to show an "already" old deck.
Personally, i think it will be an attention getter no matter. So how u make use of that attention would be the key to working ur magic. Would these look good in a flourish?
On a side note, the deck smells slightly different than a normal deck of Bikes, cos of the extra ink in the printing, not that its smelly or wat. Every inch of the cards and deck box is covered in print (including the seal).
To sum up, its like a deck in the range of Ghosts, Vipers and Black tigers. These are not the ordinary decks available in convenience stores anyway. So its another "special" deck in some sense. If u want it, get it.
