Just finished my exams, and thought that I'd pick up some simple tricks before enlisting so I can perform for my friends. :)

Hi Welcome to the forum, First of all Magic is an Art itself. You would have to dedicate your time and almost everything into Magic, kindly read this post about learning magic. Click Here

Man. by the next couple of years everyone in singapore will be walking on the streets carrying a deck of cards.

You've gotta have the dedication and not butcher up magic by learning a "couple of simple tricks" to "impress". If you're that type, number 1, I suggest you leave the forum, and number 2, I suggest you gauge your eyes out with a rusty iron bar.

If you do wish to devote your time and effort and money into magic, well, then just ignore whatever I said up there, and welcome to the forum. ^_^ If you don't and still persist, I'm gonna go over to your place with that rusty iron bar and gauge out your eyes myself. ;)

oh, and what I said up there basically applies for all the new guys, because there's like a sudden surge in new members in here.

Anywas, with that said, welcome, and yeah, go browse through some of the threads and learn some practical knowledge already. ;)

Dear Friend,

Starting out simple with a few tricks to entertain your friends is fine, I guess. But you may be in for a big disappointment if I tell you this:

The S'pore Magic Circle does not reveal any secrets or teach you tricks.

You can however still learn from many of the members here if you want to take up magic. We can recommend you to local magic dealers, online shops, teaching resources and once you kick-start your magical journey, you can always attend the meet-ups where you can share your ideas. Then and only then, when you have proved to have genuine interest, will you be taught new effects from the new friends that you have made.

It may seem a little selfish to an outsider, but this only happens because the very existence of magic depends strongly on the existence of its secrets. David Blaine wouldn't make it to national TV nor receive sponsorship for his performances if everyone were aware of his secrets before his performances.

Not that you can't be just a beginner for your own self-interests, but even as a beginner, you're still liable for certain commitments which you should take very seriously (read the post that Winder suggested).

If you ask yourself, "So what? I just wanna learn, impress my pals and don't care about the rest of the philosophical stuff." If you do that, the consequences will only bounce back at you. Imagine your precious time and effort spent at practicing your tricks, and upon performing that, your buddies say "That's kid's stuff lah! I know how it's done!" Your efforts will go down the drain and you'll end up looking like a fool... NOT good.

I know there are certain websites revealing magical secrets for free to laymen, but fortunately, SMC isn't one of them because we're committed and dedicated to the Art of Magic. If you're looking for a genuine local magic forum, this is it. If you're looking for a forums full of rip-offs, we can't meet that unethical requirement.

That said, enjoy your stay here and feel free to browse around. Don't hesitate to ask any questions if you wish. I assure you that they'll be answered truthfully and fairly.

Regards, Moondust

Yeah, I've pretty much thought about this already. Right now, I'm planning to just planning to get Magic for Dummies, read somewhere that it's a great books for beginners. I've already visited some webbies on card tricks and read through some.

I do understand that tricks are important to a magician, and should not be revealed in any ways. Anyways, I'm not planning to ask how certain tricks work. Gonna get the book and try to figure the basics out myself (can't find it in the lib, gonna try borders/kino).

In any case, I'll be enlisting next week, so I won't be able to commit myself to learning for the next month or so.. But rest assured that I'll put myself into learning the ropes once I'm able to book out. heheh.

That's good! I'm really glad that you already have the correct mentality to begin with! If you can stick on with your thirst for knowledge, that mentality will bring you to greater heights in magic.

Welcome to the club, and do ask if you need advice.

Btw, you can find magic resources in the library. Check it out again. ;)

Yep.. I tried JE lib today. But Magic for Dummies wasn't available. All I could find was some book on party tricks.

If you're going to a bookstore like Borders or Kinokuniya (couldn't remember which one), try a book for beginners by Mark Wilson. Couldn't remember the title either, but I remembered reading about it from somewhere. It's a highly recommended literary resource for beginner magicians.

heheh. thanks. i'll keep a lookout for that.
