Hello brother, as magicians our gambling routines are supposed to warn people of the dangers of serious gambling, they are NOT supposed to give us the extra abilty to con or cheat our friends cash.
Please do not take this skill as a new found wonder.
Magic is an art, a beautiful gift.
As u said chinese new year is coming, why not join in the fun and be a layman once again, and gamble to have fun, not to cheat pple of money.
Cheers,
Jerome aka ah boi

There seems to be a serious misunderstanding about the difference between cheating and gambling routines.
A gambling routine is about fantasy and wish fulfilment. It is magical in nature and leaves a lasting impression on the audience that something impossible has just transpired.
CHEATING is exactly what it means. You play a game with an advantage that is unavailable to the other players.
*** WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE AND FROWN UPON CHEATING ***
Sheeke is right.

Thanks shade, and Broderick u got to check out SHADES gambling routine, as aloy said, their scary.
We educate layman on cheating not to con them.
Heard of a one handed second deal?
Ask the master himself.

Being proficient in gambling routines does not make you a card sharp.
Do you know that it takes a lot of guts to cheat, whether in gambling tables or otherwise.
As what Shade & Sheeke have mentioned, we must educate the layman to avoid being cheated. Why not use your skill to entertain your friends during this festive season.
This way you make more friends than enemies. If you are caught cheating, you may get yourself hurt or land yourself in hospital.
Nobody like to be cheated.
In the real world, cheating at gambling tables is entirely different from what a magician know. Dealing good seconds, bottoms & palm does not make you one.
Those cheats normally operate in group of 5 and they are always ready to put up a fight if they are caught. If it is easy, I do not have to perform magic but become a card sharp.
One advice, never gamble with strangers at a funeral wake.
Enjoy this wonderful art and have a piece of mind.

Wow! Uncle Bob, can u tell me more about gambling at a funeral wake?
Im just curious!
Cheers, Jerome aka ah boi
Bob Chua - February 8, 2007 01:01 AM (GMT)
Just for your knowledge on how they cheat at Funeral Wake.
Normally some relatives or visitors to a funeral wake who wish to stay longer will tends to pass their time gambling, like mahjong or card games.
Unknown to the host, a group of about 4 -5 cheats will mingle around and pretend to be related to the deceased. If they see a card game in progress, they will join in.
They just steal the cards to be held by their accomplices. When the main player need the card, they do an exchange. It is easy coz their accomplices will shield the player during the exchange.
When they leave after making their winnings, the 52 cards deck will have 3 - 4 cards missing.

I agree with Uncle Bob. I saw videos on how cheats work in casino, or private gambling places.
You never know who they are and they never use sleights of hand, they greatly use misdirection and the tense excitment on the table to get hold of cards.
Better be safe than sorry, anyway, even if you want to try during chinese new year, the way you cut the deck, hold the deck, deal the cards, let people know that you handle cards alot. If you keep winning, do you think they let you off that easy?
Juz don't try the impossible.
Broderick - February 8, 2007 01:59 AM (GMT)
Actually i did not plan to cheat ;) Once i was playing card with my ex-school friend. He palm a card which is visiable from my angle so i just laugh and say nice palm=).I agree with sheeke and shade we should warn our love ones about the danger of gambling out :g:

Don't mind me being silly...
I attempted to cheat before in CNY around 2 years ago... Making 400+ bucks in the process. Since then, I never gambled again. Some things just need to happen once.
Uncle Bob is right: Gambling routines NOT equal to you being a card sharp.
From the tables myself, I would say that cheating in these fast company is actually very easy (I'm honest!! You can get away with lousy m***ing, it's just timing). You just need the guts and the ability to get away with the guilt.
Seriously, if you want to cheat in a game during CNY, don't try. I never got away with the guilt of taking the money off those suckers.
Now I switch the demonstrations instead during CNY for my friends. Hoping that they stop continuing this silly pastime.
My 2 cents,
Kenneth

hey thanks uncle bob!
Its quite true. its kind of upset to hear that such people dont use their talent to entertainment but to CHEAT.. it really leaves a bad impression to the layman.
Being that if i were to walk up to someone and say that i would like to show him a trick, he will sure reject with dislike because he would think that i may cheat his or her money..
Well, lets entertain and amuse our audience instead of treating them like a fool!
Cheers,
Stuart ^_^

In the first place I think this is the wrong place to ask for tips on cheating during CNY ... or for that matter cheating anywhere or anytime.
I have personally caught one guy cheating when I was the banker during one of our CNY gambling sessions. He just l**ped 4-5 cards and switched them when he needed a particular card. He took advantage that he was family and we trusted him.
Believe me, he got into serious trouble with his dad.
Point being, when it comes to gambling, you gotta be alert especially when there are many hands on the table.
I suggest you earn your money the old fashion way, work for it ... I am sure if you practise hard and are serious, you can earn much more at performing gigs - less risk of getting hands chopped too ...
Heh
Keep the moment magical

Hmm... lapping 4 or 5 cards in a deck is so easy to detect, just have feel the thickness of the deck, and with people sitting beside each other, wonder how did he manage to pull this off? Maybe he didn't read Erdnase.
Just curious.
Bob Chua - March 17, 2008 03:01 PM (GMT)
My word of advice, don't gamble for money and you will not be upset by it. Gamblers never win because with the winnings they will spend lavishly and when they loose, it will be from their own pocket.
All gamblers have one prayer when they loose: Please let me break even and I will stop.
Knowing how to do a bottom or second well to cheat may end up you going to jail for "Cheating".
Use what you know in magic to entertain and amaze your audience. If you are competence enough, you may make an honest living performing magic although you cannot be a millionaire. At least you enjoy what you love best.

Hi All,
Most agree with Uncle Bob, with the IR coming up, I can foresee many social issues, but that's my POV.
Nothing like good old hard work ...
