Title: History Of Singapore Magic
Description: A Continuing Journey Through Time

jcsum - February 23, 2007 09:25 AM (GMT)
Hi All,

With Aloy's permission, here is an interesting article that various members of Concept:Magic team put together on the History of Singapore Magic.

It highlights notable magic achievements and individuals in Singapore from the 1950s to present and is currently the most comprehensive cross-spectrum article on Singapore magic history to date.

It was a pleasure putting the ariticle together as I'm fortunate to be one of the few 3rd generation magicians to have had direct interection with the 1st generation magicians of Singapore. It was a trip into history and an enriching experience to see how magic has evolved in Singapore.

Enjoy!

Wow, thanks for the info! I certainly get to know a lot of stuffs, the best part is that great wong actually came to SIngapore and start the whole Magic concept, i always that that Great Wong is a Legend is China.

Sadly due to some problems, that i heard of from some former IMS menbers, the club ended shortly, which cause alot of magicians to stop practising magic.

I am from SAM, i it certainly help me to know more about the senior members like Mr Andrew Kong and Mr Charles Choo for their contribution to the SAM and the mgic industry in Singapore.

Thanks Mr JC Sum for the info!!

I like magic history, and what magicians in the past have done.

Of particular interest to me is Tan Hock Chuan. Just wondering, is the Tan Hock Chuan Cover Pass invented by him or was it just named after him? Anyone knows?

The history of magic is certainly interesting.

Thanks for putting up this information. I love the concept of magic in the website especially the illusion design section. Great job!

I am impressed by the gal called Ning mentioned in somewhere. Have done some minor search, I understand that she started this "hobby" sometime in Sep 2004? And it is amazing and impressive that within less tha 3 years, she has such a great success - able to performed on stage with JC Sum and with her own performance as well. Congrats! I am sure this has become you part time or maybe full time job :) I also understand that you have a little shop as well.

This SMC forum was also mentioned and thanks to Aloysius. I will definetly meet up with you one day when I am back in Singapore and also Ning as well. Both Aloysius and Ning has definetly set a good example for those who are serious in magic - well done!

Silverdream, thanks for your vote of confidence... Yes, besides being a part of the Concept:Magic team, I also run my own online magic store :) It's been around for quite a bit, and is almost as old as this forum! Do visit it at www.thelittlemagicshop.com if you haven't already done so *grin*

Magic became my full-time "job" only recently, having just finished my uni studies ^_^ But yes, it's scary yet exciting at the same time... I don't really consider it a job because I enjoy it far too much to consider it 'work' :g: Anyways, Im glad you're part of this forum... and that you also find this history article useful! Do let us know when you're back in SG... we meet up regularly, so it'd be really neat if we can have a jam session over drinks! :)

Cheers,
ning

PS: Don't let the Concept:Magic photo of 'Magic Babe' intimidate you in anyway... *grin* Everyone who knows me personally know I'm actually friendly and very approachable. I'm not my alter ego when I hang out with friends, so I don't usually carry my Samurai sword or wear leather! LOL...

Yes, I notice that the little magic shop is also managed by you. At such a young age, I must say that you have done well!

I have not bought anything from your shop yet as there are so many stuff there and it will take me a while before I can finished reviewing what stuff you got in your store. Out of curiosity and profession sickness - there are so many items in your store, are all these on hand? If so, won't you run a risk of having too much stock on hand and not able to sell them?

I read it somewhere that you do order from murphy and ellusionist as well. Does this mean that if I order through you for any products I see in other sites, I get some savings (I ordered my goods from ellusionist before I join this forum)?

I will be back next month and hopefully I can find a job soon..... as for drinks, would love to join you guys. Drinks in HK is so cheap.... with S$50 you can drink all you want till 5am!
For jamming session, I would rather watch you guys jam as I think I am bad as compared to you guys haha...

I don't mind you not carrying your sumurai sword but you can still have the leather, I won't mind :) and as they all say it in Hong Kong - Lang Lui.

cheers

Hi,

Does anyone knows how is uncle Charles Choo ? I used to visit his shop at Far East Shopping Centre in 1982.. I was then a Secondary school boy and with my friends, we can hang around in his shop from 1pm till 5pm just to watch people (magicians) popping by to chat and performed tricks. Really missed those days. My first Thumb Tip was bought from his shop and is still in my drawer. In fact, once a while when I am in Orchard, will always try to climb up Far East Shopping Ctr to recall some memories..

:)

Ning - March 2, 2007 10:29 AM (GMT)
He's doing fine and dandy :) Uncle Charles is a member of both SAM & IBM. If you need his contact, drop me a PM. I'll check with him first if it's ok to give it to you.

Cheers,
ning ^_^

LOL... Thanks for the 'lang lui' compliment! That's really sweet of you!

Thanks for the vote of confidence too, about The Little Magic Shop  It's an online store so for items we don't have in stock, I'd have to order in from our supplier which is MMS Inc ^_^ Do take time to look around the site, your comments are much appreciated!

Cheers,
ning
