Description: Linking Rings routine

M.A.D. - December 2, 2004 03:48 AM (GMT)
Hi, all master, may i know some good stage magic routine such as the Linking Rings.

Aloy - December 2, 2004 04:00 AM (GMT)
you mean what are some effects/routine suitable for stage, e.g. like the Linking Rings?

Ropes perhaps? And mentalism effects. These are some of the ones you can do for stage without a crane to move your equipment.

M.A.D. - December 2, 2004 04:19 AM (GMT)
Hi Morphine,

i needed someone to teach me in linking ring, can you be my mentor in this field.

thanks for reply.

ReDeFiNe - December 2, 2004 05:31 AM (GMT)
Linking Rings is my favourite piece of magic..its the ultimate contemporary classic piece for me. I use it to close my stage shows as well as perform in all my competitions...

There have been many renditions of the rings...slow,fast, with little rings..or as much as 20 rings...I have done almost everything..

The routine i do professionally, is a combination of juggling and rings magic...ala Jeff Mc Bride routine but with original moves...I use 6 rings for my act..and uses Dominico Dante Rings from Italy(very hard to find now)...I believe most of the people inSingapore have seen me perform in my show...or on TV...

For childrend magic show..I do an interactive routine with kid and lots of comedy..the routine i use is the "GREAT WONG ROUTINE"..a true classic whereby sculptures are made out of rrings..almost 15 sculptures in the full routine..i simplified and added more humour with interaction for my show..its a killer...
It is almost important to learn this routine now unless through people who knows this routine..I would thankful to be thaught by a good friend in Magic for this routine...

Johnathan Neil Brown has the most beautiful 2 rings routine in History! All should see his act ..its a masterpiece..

Rick Thomas in his Vegas Show features the rings as part of his interlude..his is also a slow routine using many locking rings..its beautiful..ps: David Copperfield in his early specials performs the rings too..i lost the video..he uses 4 rings and its in a set of a Exibition whereby there are metal sculptures..its a story routine...

Ninga Rings is also another masterpiece..it is a miracle performed up close..see Shoot Ogawa!

I have a huge collection of rings set..cause its my favourite piece of magic as well as one of the oldest..

It was said...all magicians should perform 2 effects.1)Cups and Balls and 2)Linking Rings....for they are the oldest and best routines to display a magicians capabilty...

I would be happy to share more thoughts about rings stuff...Till then..keep linking!

BEst,
Jeremy Pei

Wow, excellance!!!!

will u like to teach us the routine?? please

ReDeFiNe - December 2, 2004 06:55 AM (GMT)
Linking rings is one section as part of my lecture for magicians..I have done a lecture last year in England for the British IBM ring convention. I did the linking rings as part of it too...Yeah I would be glad to share some thoughts...Just check out Magic On Stage video volume 1 by Jeff McBride..in my opinion, the most comprehensive rings materials available on video ..as well as Stevens Magic Emporium video on the rings...

Best,
Jeremy Pei

Wow... ^_^ Thanks for sharing the comprehensive list with us. I think most of us are familiar with Jeff McBride & Shoot Ogawa's linking rings performances... can you tell us more about Jonathan Neil Brown's 2 ring routine? I wasn't able to find anything about him on google & yahoo, unlike Rick Thomas who has several sites :(

I saw Luna Shemada's rendition of zombie ball & linking rings and felt like a captivated child in awe again... lol  If anyone has ANY videos on her PLEASE pm me... Thanx!!! ^_^

ReDeFiNe - December 17, 2004 03:44 AM (GMT)
Hey,

JNB ring routine is hardly seen unless you travel to a magic convention overseas...i manage to get an old video of the magic castle with that routine...a little fuzzy but still ok...NIng ill show u the routine next time :D

Hmm..i have not seen luna shemada routine ...i do zombie ball too..use the Losander Zombie..think thats the best and most magical zombie ball...

There are too many routines on rings...Japanese has some nice ones too...will discuss more...

Ciao!

Ning - December 17, 2004 03:58 AM (GMT)
Thanks Jeremy! Looking forward to see you work your rings... ^_^

I was at Siam Magic in Bangkok, talking with Chalee the magic demostrator, about ladies in magic when he told me he had a DVD on Luna Shemada. He closed the store (it was after 5pm) and we watched it on his flatscreen TV. She was so awesome!!!

Seriously, I felt so inspired after that! Anyone can do a zombie routine but her presentation and all was REALLY very magical :o She creatively weaved a storyline about a mother/child using a brilliant glowing sphere and fire. Her linking rings routine is beautiful too... You've GOT to see it to know what i'm talking about!

So..... if anyone can find performance vids by her, pls let me know. I'd be really grateful. :P

ReDeFiNe - December 17, 2004 04:07 AM (GMT)
Arrrg...u should have bought the disc!!!hee...

Oh have u seen Jason Latimer Rings, Cards and Balls act? its cool!!!I performed with him in England and i liked his style very much...my friend in Japan Hikari has a beatutiful routine too and won many competitions with it..think u will like this one Ning..show u next time..

Yeah zombie ball has many interesting presentations...Bog Borgia does a nice one like an Alien theme and also Brett Daniels one is nice...Yumi from Japan does a zombie without revealing the ball..like a little magic ghost under the hank...

Maybe a new thread for the zombie ball can start :D

Ning - December 17, 2004 04:23 AM (GMT)
I would have dearie, but the DVD wasn't for sale :( It was Chalee's personal collection... apparently it was Luna Shemada's professional demo & PR CD. Some of her husband's stuff was also inside... I think his name is Losander, the german magi who markets his infamous bubble routine (CUTE - obedient bubbles that flat through rings), Zombie balls, his own dancing cane and the latest "new tech zombie" Sphere.

LOL... this is just a thought, but maybe for the next outing we can gather @ someone's place and watch magic performance vids until our eyes pop out :P

yujie - December 17, 2004 01:07 PM (GMT)

Oh c'mon Yujie! ;) I'm quite sure once you pick them up again it'd all come back to you gradually!!! ^_^

ReDeFiNe - December 20, 2004 04:19 AM (GMT)
did an illusion show the other day and this gal friend of my other friend saw my act and said the rings are cool ,and would be neat to link her earings together....(she was wearing those big round ones...)hmm...maybe something ard that line is cool ...

maybe (presentation more for gals..) have a nice little box with many different earings inside..picking up a few different designs one....among those a key ring..then link them ( you can have triangles, long ones, square, round and different colors..)

;) just a thot...

Jeremy

Ning - December 20, 2004 04:22 AM (GMT)
LOL... interesting thought. Morphine actually has his own rendition of Linking Indian Bangles ^_^ Maybe if we ask him nicely, he'd show it to us during the next gathering?

Btw, anyone familiar with Chris Capehart's 3-Ring Routine? Opinons please... ^_^

ReDeFiNe - December 20, 2004 04:30 AM (GMT)
hmmm..did a search on that guy and found his site..not much info but jus a pic...

have u seen the routine?

I got a friend in Beijing China, LI Ning, he is Monte Carlo Contest Champion with his mask and costume change act....He use to do a ring routine with 3 rings...the cool thing is that its a floating ring routine..rings float in mid air and link in mid air...
Maybe Ning u might like this style :)

I competed with him in 1999 at Guilin ...only set back is his act is too long so a little bored but cool moves...

Jeremy
ps: i got this act on tape...umm..the whole contest actually ...secretly filmed... :P

Ning - December 20, 2004 04:38 AM (GMT)
Wow... sounds very cool! I'd like to see it someday if you're ok with lending me a copy of that video Jeremy ^_^

I've not seen Chris Capehart's routine but read online that apparently he came up with several moves which Shoot Ogawa uses for his Ninja Rings, but apparently did not give him credit for. Was just wondering if anyone was familiar with his work...

ReDeFiNe - December 20, 2004 04:53 AM (GMT)
sure!...its in a vhs tape..gotta get it converted soon...collecting fungus...hahahz...

Actually to say the truth...slow routines are the most magical ...i will do a slow one....the only reason i do a more faster and dynamic routines is that for local shows and events if you perform a slow routine...very likely people might not be able to concentrate well..cause too much distraction...But in a theater..a slow routine is awsome...

Rick Thomas in his live Vegas Stage Show, does a ring routine ..under a hollow spot from above..its a beauty to watch...

Dunno if any of you have seen David Copperfield's routine..in one of his early specials..in fact his 3rd special..its performed in the mids of a sculpture exhibition...then he pluck out the rings from those sculpture and perform the routine..it ends with 2 sculpture linked together..of which one is held by DC and the other by the led gal in that act..really nice routine...

Anything DC touches becomes a masterpiece..

I use to have that video but lost it..haiz..anyone got his first 3 specials here? :) i would love to purchase that set...

Best,
Jeremy

Jeff McBride magic on stage dvd vol 1-3, who know the price?

Ning - December 20, 2004 07:21 AM (GMT)
Hi MAD. It'd be prudent to send a direct PM to some of the dealers here on SMC for faster replies if you wish to obtain the set from them. Good luck ;)

Rock God of Magic - January 31, 2005 07:44 AM (GMT)
Hey Ning!
I've seen Chris Capehart's lecture here in Toronto and his ring routine was wicked! If you can get a manuscript or video for it (I have neither sadly) it's worth it. I've been doing rings for years and he floored me with a couple of moves. I have a few ring performances on video, such as Jonathon Neil Brown's, McBride, etc. It's a staple of my daytime street act. Bought the Proline rings recently and they were crap - they actually broke on 2 occasions - once in Singapore during a show! Will probably get a set of Owen's later this year, but they are really pricey! Will use my refund from Proline as a down payment :)

Jeff

Ning - February 1, 2005 04:42 AM (GMT)
Hey Jeff, I was given the assumption that Proline Rings were supposed to be of very good performance quality! Well, everyone with those expensive Owen Rings have never complained about anything so that's probably the best bet ;)

There's a Chris Capehart 3 Ring Video out there, it's going to be on my wish list for sure! :)

Hi guys,i just bought a set of linking rings from Gician, only one routines is taught inside :( ,but i think its a good collection to my library...Anyone bought this as well and knows what dvd for beginners that taught linking rings?

Winder - March 17, 2005 01:27 AM (GMT)
The only dvd which will teach you the best stuff is Shoot Ogawa - Ninja Ring dvd.

M@gical86 - March 17, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
rhanx alot..I think i will get that dvd soon...

GordonLi - March 17, 2005 04:12 AM (GMT)
yes, i like the ninja ring routine.

but its only for closeup.

anyone has any recommendations for sources to larger rings?

i know one will be jeff mcbrides magic on stage dvds.

Clement - March 17, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
I am also into linking rings now but had just started...

Mcbride magic on stage DVD is a very good one for linking rings although i had not got my hands on it.

There is also another DVD which teaches linking rings. That is called "25 amazing tricks with linking rings".I am not sure whether this is good or not but its content sounds good.

GordonLi - March 17, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
u might also like to check out dai vernon's symphony of the rings.

any1 knows how to get great wong's ring routine?

weehome - March 18, 2005 03:55 AM (GMT)
hmm... 25 Amazing Trick with LR are all the basic moves etc. So if just starting out, great video.

Linking Rings - Part of the Greater Magic Library should be good.... I have another of the greater lib magic series. (you will see many different style of performance.)

For Great Wong's performance, I think the only person who knows now is Gician Tan. (I think he did commented that wants to find some passionate to pass it on.) Maybe Jeremy knows too?

weehome - March 18, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
abt the Luna DVD, I met Losanders in Seattle so he send me his demo act... :)

tell me if needed.. but must really go and find -.- don't know if still got it cos I lend lend.. ppl don't return... MUST PUT DEPOSIT liao...

I think Andy (Orientalist) knows this routine too.

Jimagician - March 18, 2005 08:45 AM (GMT)
I have the great wong LR routine illustrated and written instructions.
Jeremy and Gigian knows the routine as well.
But it is not easy to follow. If you are new to LR, start with the basics first!

Great Wong LR instruction is a collection piece. I will treasure it as long as I can. It is his personal copy and don't ask me how I got it! :)

:D Seeing the word linking rings reminds me of a magician..forget his name though..

I met him in ParkMall there. He says he is trying to get publicity and thus, perform Ninjas Rings to me n frien..

At first, he did his own routine, then later, he passed to me one ring and told me to hit it to the other ring..i tried for 3 times but couldnt get it through and he kept tellin me to hit harder, use more strength!!

On the forth try, frustrated me, i hit it with all my strength and it finally got it. the most funniest part is on thr 4th blow, i accidentally damage the ring. The ring was spoiled..after he told me to hit, he quickly kept the ring..lol..

but the rest of his tricks are quite nice though but he expose too much magic. when he steal things, he steal from public..he let the public see he is taking something out rather than letting us see he is taking.

but overall, i tink he did pretty well..it was my frien which told me bout the ring thingy..haha..nice job to the magician whom showed it to me in plaza singapora mac!!

You can't spoil the Original "Ninja Rings" that easily. Unless you throw it from a very high ground. I suppose that guys uses the normal rings to perform the the routine.
