Title: Gambling Routines
joeltay81 - March 8, 2007 01:28 PM (GMT)
I'm new to gambling routines but am interested in learning some stuff along this line.
Where should I start. What DVDs are recommended and from there, what are the more intermediate gambling effects?

You can try weapon of a cardshark by Jeff Wessmiller or Scams and Fantasies book Ortiz by darwin ortiz. The first dvd teaches about different techniques for gambling while the second teaches about routines. You can check out these dvds to see if these are what u like.

I think the easier gambling techniques are false shuffling, hopping the cut, hold outs and mucking.
The intermediate to advanced ones are riffle culling and stacking (cold culling and stacking), false dealing - bottom, centre and second dealing, dealing the punch...
There are many others but I can't remember them all. A lot of the more 'pristine' effects cannot really be learned because there simply are no good teachers, such as advanced riffle stacking and culling, dealing the punch and several very refined cold deck techniques. You just have to understand the basic concepts and carry on yourself from there.
Finding the basic concepts are easy. For the easier gambling techniques, there are many dvds such as jeff wessmiller's. Getting concepts for the more advanced techniques you can look at Darwin Ortiz's books, 'phantoms of the card table' by Gazzo and David Brit-something sorry i forgot his name.
Poker cheating forums online are also very helpful. And lastly, you can go watch a certain video on youtube called 'doc's cold deck expose', where you will see him perform several really good cold deck switches as well as some passes, bottom dealing and a beautiful version of the luisiana switch.
I hope i could be of some help.

There's one by daryl, called "full monte, daryl" where he teaches ALLLL the 3card monte routines.
In this DVD, daryl goes through everything in GREAT details. i think it's very worth the while. 3 card monte is very well known and most people knows that it is possible to cheat in this game, so if you're able to demonstate it, then good la.

Hope that by learning this you don't use the skills to cheat on the table. We learn not to be cheated by others not to cheat others.

I know this might be a bit off topic.
One of the people that I know (not that I know a lot) who can do very "bei bai" (read: very good) gambling sleights is Shade. In fact, by his own admisson, he had used it on us in some of our regular card games!! Imagine a bunch of magicians cheated by him!!
Ok, but I must clarify, money was not involved. He only use it to make me help finish his vodka (which is wicked enough, I think).
If you are very interested in gambling routines, can try to bribe him to show you some.

Gambling routines and gambling sleights are 2 separate and should individually discussed.
Using the basic of sleight of hand, one can easily be acheive to performa gambling routine. And example would be Harry Lorayne's Poker Deal. I believe the few that the rest of the forum members specifically namely above would be more than enough for an average magician.
However, an example of gambling sleights would be like a second or a bottom deal. And also the perfection of the sleight. I believe the few who used this would rarely ever tell, simple because it is way to dangerous to expose.
Hope this will give you a better picture of Gambling Routines vs Gambling Sleights.
Cheers,
dry_gin
P.S. Though there is a difference between a Gambling Routine and a Gambling Sleight, there is also a way LOT of difference between the view of a Magician and that of a Card Shark!

Yea! My very first SMC meeting and Shade had to scare the brains out of me with his gambling routine. Some moves can tell how it is done, but he is so smooth with his sleights and deals. Other moves. I am left  .
And you guys were asking why I didn't dare to perform any effects infront of him. ;)

C'mon brother, given a chance to play football with Ronaldinho, I would... no matter whether I would get the ball or not.
Even though I am just a 7th grade magician, I still relish the chance of performing in front of people like Enrico, Uncle Bob or even... Shade (as much as I hate to admit, he's too much better than me... urghh..). I can learn much from their comments and improve on my work.
Ok, I know this is :off: but I think this should be a fear on alot of newbie's mind.

don't mean to ask a dumb question but who's shade?
And I thought this thread was to discuss the types of gambling routines, Probably even move names.
How come you guys just start reminicing?

One of the mods. Because he's quite a specialist on gambling sleights.
If you don't want to meet him because he will cheat you, buy the dvds recommended.

Charming Cheat Show & Lecture by Martin A. Nash is a really good video for learning gambling routines. It way for center dealing is really good n worth the whole video but you won't be able to get away with it in a real gambling situtaion. Do check it out it really good

A gambling routine without a single gambling sleight: Dealer's Lesson. (Can't remember by who.. sorry)
It's almost self working and it is really strong. Method is pure genius.
