Title: Noob Qn: What Cards?

nerdie - December 3, 2004 07:41 AM (GMT)
Hellos! I just said my hellos in intros, haha..
I've totally new to this, just picked up a few tricks but as with all tricks practice is what i need to pull them off.
So what i see here are bicycle decks and nothing but bicycle decks (maybe some tiger? aladdin?), so i've a few questions if anyone can oblige me please do!
So what's different about bicycle decks (the one i'm fiddling with is a free deck from Martell VSOP that my family uses to play cards, haha)
And i saw in some thread that Golden Landmark is the cheapest place to get them, right?
Thanks so much for reading!!

bikes are much more smooth than those cards that come free. better for doing fanning etc. if you have been working with those cards for a long time, when you first handle the bikes, they will fall 50% of the time. its takes time to get used to the smoothness. but once its done, some moves become easier.

just my 2 cents worth.

Ok thanks! :)
What about aladdin cards?

And bicycle decks are cards of choice for magicians because most gimmicks are available with bicycle backs.

So even when it's an ungimmicked deck/trick, we try to use bicycle decks to maintain some consistancy.

Winder - December 3, 2004 03:12 PM (GMT)
I would recommend Bicycle, cause all Gaff and Gimmicks come in Bicycle back design. :)

nerdie - December 3, 2004 03:22 PM (GMT)
ok thanks!!

poping - December 3, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)
bicycle highest quality . i am buying them soon! whee!
erm , if you have credit card hor.. go ellusionist buy Black Tiger Deck
and the Gaffed deck.

Oh hell , the cards are so funny.. gaffed like what.. haha u go see the preview vid

Winder - December 3, 2004 04:05 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't suggest wasting money on the black tiger deck for any one who is just starting magic. Spend the money correctly and wisely on a Deck of Bicycle and some new materials so you can enhance yourself with new skills and technique. Then improvise them and perform and present to someone whom is willingly to sit down and watch you perform. :)

nerdie - December 3, 2004 04:14 PM (GMT)
ya man! haha i won't spend so much money, still noobist..
i'm still using my Martell VSOP cards, heh...

ren8585 - December 4, 2004 01:09 AM (GMT)
martell vsop, tiger beer cards, airline cards quality sucks.. just get alladdin cards.. if u have an extra dollar get bicycles

nerdie - December 7, 2004 03:24 PM (GMT)
Lol, ya, they suk quite bad, thanks for the tip! :)

Xtreme - December 8, 2004 03:48 PM (GMT)
yeah. but try to take good care when you get a bicycle deck. mine wears off within 3 weeks at most? try not to drop or scratch them. and do not riffle shuffle too often.. bikes are better in a sense cause bicycle decks are much thinner .. but when you are used to bikes, DLs and other sleights would be easier to perform using bikes rather than other type of cards.

hope this information helps!!

riffle shuffling the deck often is fine. its helps the deck to go into the 'break in' condition much quicker. Cards usually wear out quick because, you drop them often and particles of dirt are stuck in the playing card itself. When u finish your game of 52 card pickup, Faro the deck immediately, followed by some riffle shuffles and maybe even a spring. Always remember to cut the deck often(too much false cuts are no good) and faro often. this will help your cards last longer.
once again, riffle shuffling the deck often is fine. :P :P :P :P

Anyone thought of using Stud cards? Cannot find in Singapore I guess, but they're thin, real thin.

iewgnod - December 9, 2004 11:00 AM (GMT)

heartsofclubs - December 9, 2004 02:47 PM (GMT)
ultimately, it's really dependent on per magician. At times, i prefer other decks which are rougher.. It does make some moves comfortable.. Different decks have different tones of colour. Depending on mood, you might really want them too. If you're still new and can't make up your mind.. take the original bikes first.. Slowly figure the differnt kinds of decks. :)

Nicholas - December 9, 2004 02:56 PM (GMT)
ok firstly the Difference is bicycle has air-pockets which makes it smooth...but there are some people who prefers rougher carDs example :streamline, alaDins etc. it totally DepenDs on wat u like some prefer rough carDs as it is eaiser to Do certain tricks like DL etc. some like smooth carDs as it can eaiser to fan them etc. but then again it all DepenDs on u man..... wateva u like just get it Don't care wat others say ...

your life , your style

IMO, those paper cards, when they expand, they become super thick... and the edges go all funny. DLs become damn obvious. AC cards when they expand, its not so obvious and the cards stick... so DLs become a breeze.

Nicholas - December 10, 2004 07:17 AM (GMT)
IMO? whats that? anyways paper carDs really get very thick when they expanD? i DiDnt know that thx for the info

:D

Even when I use Aced Bikes, the cards feel totally awkward if I do my stuff outdoors due to humidity. You can feel the smoothness disappear and the cards become sticky and expanded.

If I do paper cards, it's gonna feel like I handling a block of sandpaper.

IMO = In my opinion.

And yes, cards do expand. If you practice in the comfort of your home with the aircon on, the cards feel great. But bring it out into the damp, humid air of the night and you'll feel the difference.

Mystical2004 - December 10, 2004 11:23 AM (GMT)
haha... last time go australia... then accidentally left my deck with the card guard in the room... room was @ lowest temperature... then come back, WOW!!!! cards are in perfect fanning condition again!!! then come back singapore, wanted to take out the deck, then get stuck in the deck guard... had to bend it like ****... tts why never practise in aircon conditions. try outside conditions.

heartsofclubs - December 10, 2004 12:56 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure if all agree.. Caracan cards are quite hard in terms of obtaining a perfect double lift.. Of course that's not a big prob for magicians.. But due to it's one sided roughness, it's not entirely easy in getting a perfect score.. The cards do not slide across each other. THey drop off each other. Making it hard to keep them in double for long.

Mystical2004 - December 10, 2004 12:58 PM (GMT)
huh/?? one sided roughness??? what type of funny card is that? anybody here has a bicycle fan back??? price negotiable

Winder - December 10, 2004 12:59 PM (GMT)
