Hi all,
It has been a long time that nobody discuss about cups and balls here.
I want to know who do cups and balls and what routine you guys use.
understand that alot of them doesn't perform for layman.
Also, which cups you guys like to use?
as for me I like copper cups.
maybe next meeting can see some of you guys perform. :D
cheers,
Kingz

I used to think that cups and balls were sooo.. 'cliche' (for the lack of a better word from my mug-fried brain). That was until i saw the table hopping cups and balls and JC Sum's cups and balls during the magic convention. I believe JC's routine is showed in the bonus segment of his Street Illusions Dvd as well..
I personally don't do cups and balls - yet.
:off: Everytime i think of cups and balls i just can't help remembering one time i was at the Fantasma section when a guy proclaimed to everyone that he knew the secret... that there is a hole in the second cup!! :ph43r: :!!:

lol... a hole in the second cup.
I think you should do cups and balls, really a great piece of magic... you will sure love it.
Once you start you will never stop!
I like JC's routine too. I bought his DVD too...
i am crazy over cups and balls all this while...
good cups is very expensive.
Cheers,
kingz

Many magicians around the world owned Cups & Balls and Linking Rings, but unfortunately they will just leave them in their closet to gather dust.
Bring them out and have fun. Ammar has a set of 2 dvds on this subject and it touches on all the moves in this area.
If you can get hold of Frank Garcia's book on Cups & Balls, it will be a gem to collect.
To name a few, the Professor, Fred Kaps, Tommy Wonder, David Williamson are my favourites.
Most sought after Cups I can remember are Paul Fox, Betram, Rings & Things & Sherwood.
Enjoy the magic

Yeah man... Uncle Bob's Sherwood Cups are PRICELESS!!!! Elegantly beautiful, precision made with intricate designs engraved on it, they're also special edition because they are numbered!
Mega drool factor! *grin*

Well Bernard, the Sherwood Cup is indeed a beauty and it comes with a hefty price tag of USD1,300.00. It is worth every cents of it.
Since I started magic some 30 years ago, my first love is Cups & Balls. If I am younger now, I will love to collect all types of famous cups around the world.
Cups & Balls comes a long way and supposedly it was performed some 2,000 years ago.

For my beautiful god daughter, Ning.
I will bring my Sherwood Cups and fill with red wine to celebrate your birthday.
Uncle Bob
Ning - April 12, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
You're the best god father anyone can have, Uncle Bob ^_^ Truly, your Sherwood Cups are the prettiest set I've ever come across. While it's a very hefty sum, I still think it's really worth every penny you paid!
Thinking about it, I really miss the late Tommy Wonder now. I had the chance to meet him during the last IF magic convention here & he's the perfect gentleman. His unique cups & balls routine though seemingly classic, is extremely clever and I respect his ingenuity of understanding the audience's psychology.
If you haven't seen it, grab hold of that performance video ASAP!!!

For lovers of Cups and Balls, check Kevin Wu's website at

Uncle Bob.

Check out Bill Palmer's site if you fancy the cups and balls. On John Mendoza's My Best, you can see him using the Engraved Sherwoods for one of his routines.

I totally agreed what uncle bob said, many magician may have a set of cups but will leave a side to collect dust.
Why this happen? isn't cups and balls is a very nice piece of magic?
Uncle bobs, next gathering can you show me your cups and balls and your routin.
See ya!
Cheers,
Kingz

Why most magicians do not perform cups & balls?
In my opinion, it quite troublesome to carry them around. That's why cards and coins are more commonly used.
Secondly, to perform the cups & balls well is not easy because it is based on lots of misdirection and practice.
If the setting permits in the next SMC gathering, I will perform the cups & balls for your entertainment.

Wow, Ning you had a wonderful god father as well as great teacher, i know that now a day it is hard to had someone to "look up" of. (you know what i means,) but looking at this circle many magician say good upon you, you are really an " apple of many" also apple of "His" :P
ok, let come back to the Cups and Balls. B)
i am frog in the well, i only seen 4 magician doing Cups and Balls they are Lawrence Khong in his class, Jeremy Pei in his show, JC Sum in his VCD and late Tommy Wonder in Tubeyou, and myself hopefully can do a routine for my show in next time(when, not sure).
:D
so Uncle Bob might be the fifth person i will see doing cups and balls, if God permits.

Hi,
Yes, agree with Uncle Bob. Doing Cups & Balls need to have the right setting. I remember during school days, when my classmates came to my place, I will do C&B because I had made a closeup table with hidden compartment where I can easily steal the loads and balls. My friends will be sitting in the front.
Nowadays, when visiting friend's parties.. , cards, coins, TT will be the usual stuffs. But once a while, I will like to try my chop cup (when at home). Shorter to perform and the "surprise" finale is still one of the best.
cheers,
Eric

Eric,
True indeed.
I also do only chop cup they place don allow for C&B routine,
chop cup seems so much easiler...
so next time can see you perform as well...
Cheerz,
Kingz

Sometimes, if you can encounter some cups that we use. you may find quite a number that you can use to perform with. The balls you can substitute with roll paper balls, peanuts (something creative), etc. Let your imagination rolls. People will see a different to the normal cups and ball routine.
kingz - April 18, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
true indeed! but if the balls is too small sometime i find that it is too hard to handle when doing a steal etc...
I am trying to think of a very nice and funny final load...
cheers,
Kingz
Bob Chua - April 18, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
The size of the ball I am comfortable with is 3/4" in diameter. Currently I am using Mike Roger's miniature baseball and large baseball for the final load.
In my opinion, it is more entertaining to have something different for the final load. Fruits work very well with audience. However, your routine must be humorous from the beginning.
For serious C&B lovers, I suggest buying a heavy duty brass or copper cups will be to your advantage. Years ago I did my final load with 3 chicks using aluminium cups and the cups move around before the revelation.

Eric - April 18, 2007 01:49 AM (GMT)
Oh man, uncle Bob, I can imagine the audience's reaction.

Oh Wow! But wouldn't the chicks go "chip chip chip" even before the revelation?

Reminds me of Galli Galli's routine.
Bob Chua - April 18, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
I always believe we learn through our mistakes and get wiser day after day.
Maybe the moderators can organise a gathering solely for
C&B performers.
Aloy is also a lover of C&B and is quite crazy about Tommy Wonder's routine. Right Aloy?
Josh, to answer your question. Chick don't make noise that much. I tried ducklings when chicks are unavailable. Never do that coz they quack even before the routine. I had to tape their beak. It's cruel so forget the ducklings.
Uncle Bob
Eric - April 18, 2007 02:30 AM (GMT)
As has mentioned, every magician will definitely have a set of C&B whether he or she is still using it or not. It will be nice to organise a day where all of us bring our sets and post for a photo together. Don't you think is beautiful to pin it up next to your working desk ?
kingz - April 18, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
I agreed! Eric this is a great suggestion.
I think we shall really arrange this meeting....
can't wait to see all the great cups.
Cheers,
Kingz

Great to have so many people still have the passion for cups and balls and the evolving of the routine. I always enjoy seeing different ideas being perform with the C&B
