Title: Learning Dl

JirQUEST - December 4, 2004 06:15 PM (GMT)
which finger do u guys use for DL? my cousin told me to use thumb on side, but i reckon pple can see? what's a good way without revealing ur secret?

Moondust - December 4, 2004 07:20 PM (GMT)
That's one way to do your DL, thumb on the left side, but it looks a little fishy in my opinion.

I use either Larry Jenning's Snap DL or the Strike DL. The Strike is similar to the one you use, except try using your index on the right side.

Don't worry... You will never get caught... I've never got caught even once. ;)

I used to use Derek Dingle's double that he taught in his Complete Works of Derek Dingle set. I didn't buy it, but someone taught it to me a while ago. I switched to Dai Vernon's push-off after that. Richard Sanders also has a very neat sliding double in David Acer's Roadkillers that I used to practice a lot.Now I just do whatever goes with the flow in a performance.

Kev. also showed a crazy double that belongs to Paul Curry, and that was kickass as well. i also like have an affinity for aerial doubles nowadays, and so i also do stuff like Asher's diving board double, i've been practicing some of the aerial doubles from the bucks' Artifice, Ruse and Subterfuge in the Hands, and some other flourishy-double miscellanea.

As for doubles, PLEASE, please, please practice them 18 hours a day, and practice them until you feel CONFIDENT and when you feel that you have a solid double, before bringing it out into a performance. If you screw up, don't perform and practice even harder. If you screw up again, please, go and take up knitting instead.

Man, I saw some crazy sh*t they were doing in cardist.com with Lee Asher's Diving Board Double. I just love that one but I can't get it right :(

Bevel the deck a little and use thumb pressure, then strike on it and get a DL.

Oh, that was your link? Hahaha! Yeah I guess so bro. Man, that was good... pure entertainment value. Even though I'm not into flourishes, I saw those vids at least 10 times straight!

Laughed my as* off when he friggin' kicked the cards after doing the Diving Board Double flick. Goddamn, is that even possible?!

Winder - December 5, 2004 11:16 PM (GMT)
Hmm... The deck must be a little slant ?

Erm...if you look at the deck from the back view along the shorter edge, the cards should look like this:

Bro, I think my post was edited. Probably the Moderators think that it's exposure.

Oh, well, guess we'll have to wait for the meets to show how it's done.

sorry to up this, but after months of using oz's style, it's getting to be a hassle using it. i saw brad christian's style of pressing the thumb on it, and i thought it was great, but thing is, it seems so vague for me to pick up.

i thought i might have finally understood moondust's explanation. so bevel and use index to pick it up? is that what it's like?

also, what dvds can i get to practise other DL methods? currently considering greg wilson's double take... might be ordering from ning, but keeping my options open for now. anyone?

GordonLi - June 3, 2005 09:39 AM (GMT)
well, choose a DL that looks natural and suits u,

for me, a regular strike or hit double works well, looks good and i like it.

Alexander - June 3, 2005 11:32 AM (GMT)
I feel that the best ways to have a get ready for a DL is a pinky count, i do that alot, and its very useful as there are no funny movements. And, if you wanna use the strike, sometimes you will miss, so i dont use it.

Lastly, the easiest way out, is rifle the back of the deck.

heartsofclubs - June 3, 2005 02:37 PM (GMT)
I use the most obvious ways..Kinda working with reverse psychology.. They think you're faking them with that obvious move of prob doing a DL.. so they ignore that move... lolx

For now, I'm trying on Lee Asher's Diving Board Double. ^_^

Daren - June 8, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
lee asher's diving board double looks gr8 ~! bloody convincing as well. go check out his website for more info on it at www.leeasher.com :)

Huron - June 8, 2005 12:47 PM (GMT)
My favourite dl is Lee Asher's Diving Board Double. I use it all the time. Try the strike and the push-off double as well. Get Wilson's Double Take. It's a must-have.

I bought 5 card stud a long time ago just to learn the diving board double. The thing is, it doesn't teach how to do it. Anyone knows where to learn it?

Yeah, from Asher himself. He's got a whole manuscript on the DBD, with both the acrobatic and non-acrobatic versions, its applications, and even this (from what I heard) crazy effect where it's used to produce the 4 aces, from behind the back, and the deck disappears at the end. I don't have it, but for what it's worth... don't be me and go and buy it.
