Title: Coin Vanish

wei - May 5, 2007 04:53 AM (GMT)
Im quite confused about the coin vanishes that i have read in bobo's book. Especially the difference between 'The illusive coin pass' by TJ Crawford and 'A coin vanish' by Dai Vernon.

I have tried the Dai Vernon's vanish, and i have to say its really quite impressive. But sometimes my right hand fingers move even after it leaves the left hand.

Am i right to say that both vanishes use almost the same moves? Then why are they two different vanishes?

Also, i cant really get the Bobo coin vanish. It seems to me that the movement of the hands are unnatural and quite obvious that im trying to hide the coin from view by the inwards turning of both hands. Am i getting this wrong too?

By no means am I knowledgeable with coins but I'll offer what I think is supposed to happen. If I happen to be wrong, someone please correct me.

For the Bobo coin vanish, practice placing the coin in your left hand first to get the motion of how things should look naturally. Upon leaving the coin in the left hand, the right hand will go into a rest position, usually around waist level where it feels comfortable or at the side. If you do this naturally, you'll realise that your right hand will inadvertently pivot anticlockwise to show the back of the right hand towards the spectator as it returns back to the side.

The left hand pivots clockwise to show the back of its hand to bring attention to it as it is holding the coin.

The Bobo coin vanish should be performed with your body partially turned to the left side.

Also, when you do the Bobo coin vanish, you want to bring attention to your left hand, so you can try raising the height of the left hand as it "takes" the coin and pivots. I find myself raising it to my shoulder level.

Hope this helps.

Small tip that no one has mentioned. Remember to look where the coin is supposed to be(from an audience's perspective).

I just took a look at the Illusive and Dai Vernon's Coin Vanish.

While I'm not very familiar with Dai Vernon's Coin Vanish because the first time I tried working it (long long time ago), the instructions didn't seem to register for me. However, I get the feeling that because I'm using a larger coin now, it works out alot better.

The Illusive and Vernon Coin vanish look very different.

Check the pictures provided in the book. For the illusive coin vanish, the right hand provides a cover over the coin with the last 3 fingers so that the coin is unseen although it is still being held by the thumb and forefinger.

For Vernon's Coin Vanish, the coin is levered to the fingers of the right hand and then lifted away while attention is brought to the left hand.

Both have different actions.

Personally, I found the illusive vanish much easier to work out than Dai Vernon's. But it's probably just me.
