Title: Showdown 2007: Nokia N95 Vs Apple I-Phone

Red_Deck - May 5, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
Hey people. I don't know if you guys know about the apple iphone that is coming up (rumours say a June 2007 US launch, but its not confirmed). But it looks absolutely stunning, looks and features wise.

The i-phone and N95 are currently 2007's powerhouses. The whole world is putting this two phones side by side now in comparison, so I'd also like to find out what you guys think.

After reading and watching their reviews, here's what i think.
N95: Power-packed with lots and lots of features. No joke. Like a fully loaded machine gun. But design wise, its very typical of a nokia N-series phone. Nothing extremely exciting about the design, except the two way slide mechanism. But thats about it. I think this will be suited for people who are more down to earth and puts practicality before anything else. Everything you need when you are outside, running the social rat race is covered in the N95 (okay, abit of exaggeration here, but you get what i mean.. haha).

i-Phone: Okay. This phone is basically a phone integrated with the i-pod. As with all apple products, design is out of this world. It boasts a touchscreen, so gone are the days of buttons or navigation wheels. Which gives it alot more space for the screen. The interface, there is only one word to describe. SNAZZY~!!! Overall, very very sleek design. Gives off an aura of class. However, it doesn't hold as much features as the N95. More suited for people who prefer to indulge in aesthetic perfection and live in the technological garden of eden.

For me, my vote will be for the i-Phone. :g:

If you haven't already seen these two phones, or know their features, here are two very good, clear cut reviews on this two phones i've found on youtube. Take a look:

Oh please, the I-phone wins hands down.

LarryDK - May 6, 2007 01:06 PM (GMT)
Not really, you should have watched in youtube a video about the I icon of apple. That people are critising that apple using the icon too much on the products that quite carries a good name, but bad product..

Whatever... ^_^ Anyone can sponsor me any one of them, anytime! *GRIN*

Agree with lukold...

N95 just looks... ugly. And bulky. Wouldn't really want the N95 since I doubt I'd use all the functions.

lukold - May 6, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
Oh, to as why i vote the I-phone the win. It's been half a decade+ since handphones were created.

Over this period of time, it's functions were improved, design and specs improved.

The N95 is just a improved version of the past few models, nothing new here. Whereas!

The I-phone introduces it's MULTI-TOUCH screen function, it's something new to be integrated into cellphones.
If we don't embrace this new "technology", who would have the creativity and courage to venture into the unventured?

How true~! But there's a setback. I've heard people saying that battery life of the i-Phone is 3hours. What in the world can you do with a phone that lasts 3 hours? LOL ... I'm sure someone would have considered that in the design team of the i-Phone.

Seeing the votes so far, seems like the majority are mostly likely going to jump into the bandwagon of "COOL & HIP". :D

Heard my friend, why would Apple be so foolish so as to release a phone that lasts 3 hours? Perhaps something close to 3 hours VIDEO conference talktime instead.

LarryDK - May 7, 2007 01:19 AM (GMT)
True True, thats something I always like about Apple, first one to start, but on a higher note. The Price is also in the higher note.

I wonder who will get an I-Phone in SMC and give us a good review then. LOL!!

Secondly, ya N95 is really the combo of N80 with extra features, not really a fan now because of the great price difference between its older generation than now, its not that worth it to pump the extra money for that extra features. Let say you are into video extra, N95 is also not the source to go into, other models that much more better. :)

Markiebeth - June 3, 2007 04:52 AM (GMT)
I'm for i-phone. Just one thing that kinda struck my mind, how about sms? If you do noticed it does not come with a styler. Does that mean if you have fat fingers you will be hitting multiple keys at the same time?

Red_Deck - June 3, 2007 06:38 AM (GMT)
Haha... i'm sure they'll get around that. If there's anything I would worry about, it would be the screen durability. From what i've gathered, touch screens don't usually last very long before something bad strikes them.

Ha ha. Both phones are good quality phones. Depends on what kind of person is the user and what does he/she needs the phone for. For N95, you can track yourself and let others know where are you located currently and stuff. Its this function that some people buy this phone. So it really depends on what use you need the phone for.

Track yourself? You mean GPS system? I'm pretty sure the I-phone will have a GPS adapter or something. And with a screen like that? Surely it wins the N95 hands down.

joeltay81 - June 5, 2007 04:31 AM (GMT)
A good GPS system will cost almost half of what the N95 is selling for, so if you take that into consideration, I do not think it is that expensive. As for the iPhone, if you have to get a separate GPS adaptor, it would probably be an extra hundred plus. If you need a phone now, go for N95, iphone is a pure beauty but there is no way of getting it until at least next year, and even then, it has been said that there are many problems with this current version such as its short battery life which will only likely last less than a year. I understand that Apple has already paid millions to a taiwanese company to improve on these problems in developing a next generation iphone. I believe that iphone will rock the market and I think that it is one of the better looking phones on the market, but it might be wise to wait for the next generation of iphones or at least see what the reviews on the phone is like after it has been tested for a few months by the US market. No harm being cautious because Apple is new to the phone business. I'll probably wait for the price of iphone to drop a little before considering getting one, but if that happens, it would be sometime near mid of next year. By then, N95 would be seen as "outdated".

Mmm, depending on when i enlist i'll get my hands on the "JESUS PHONE - as dubbed by Gizmodo" ASAP.

joeltay81 - June 9, 2007 07:32 AM (GMT)
Ok. I just got my N95 2 days back. I happened to chanced upon a shop selling mobile phones in australia, and and they are selling the phone for $24 for 24 months instalment. That is $576. The shop usually sells the phone for that price because the plan they offer requires a minimum phone bill spending each month, but because I am using an old plan that does not have a minimum spending, I just had to pay $576, without any minimum spending which was a bargain. Purchased it on the spot. Last phone the shop had. Was selling like crazy. It retails for around S$1100 outside and on ebay, ~S$900.

I've been very impressed with the phone the last 2 days. This phone is a killer. It looks good and it comes with very nice theme layout for its background. Far exceeds my expectations.

Here are the details and my comments.

Camera/video:
This phone should be called a multimedia beast. 5 megapixel [2592 x 1944] auto focus, canera with Carl Zeiss optics (f/2.8, 5.6mm, 10cm ~infinity focusing range), and 1/1000th ~ 1/3rd s mechanical shutter. This is the best camera phone on the market Comparable with many digicams on the market. 5 megapixel should allow for a decent 28x36cm photo. It has a white LED diode flash that works well for photos taken within 4m. It lacks optical zoom, but has fairly good digital zoom. It is easy to download and upload pictures to the computer and editing pictures is easy.

I understand that iphone will only have a 2megapixel camera, so this is something you might want to consider.

Video is excellent too for a camera phone. MPEG-4 with VGA resolution (640x480) at 30 frames a second. It claims to have DVD quality on Nokia site, but that is an exaggeration. But nevertheless, it offers the quality of amateur single sensor Mini-DV camcorders. It even has a car coder reader. Just turn it on and position the car code in front of the camera.

The set comes with a video-out wire that allows you to send videos directly to your computer so that others can view it on TV, etc.

You can save presentations and connect it to a screen/monitor and play it.

Download:
N95 has exceptionally fast downloading speed. It is 3.5G. That means that it downloads 10 times faster then most 3G devices. It can be used as a modem by directly connection it to your laptop, or via bluetooth. There should be various plans for internet download. you can use ebay, skype, msn messenger, surf the net, download stuff, etc. It is fast! That is what made the difference. With my old 3G phone, I hardly used it on the net because it was so slow. Now, it is much faster then my 56k modem! Much faster. Broadband on a phone. :) The 500MB download plan that I subscribed to allows me 1000 minutes of skype talk time. That's a lot of free talking time to my friends overseas.

That's all for my review on the N95. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.

N95:
Quadband GSM phone. (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), WCDMA 2100 MHz phone.

System:
Operates on the fastest processor currently available in Symbian OS devices. Runs at 330MHz. This is great performance for a phone boosted by hardware 2D/3D graphics and imagine/video acceleration.

GPS:
The GPS on this phone is the same as Nokia E90. This is great because a GPS system outside will easily cost at least $400-500 hundred dollars. It is useful as I often get lost driving around in Australia. The GPS however is not as accurate as I like and it is quite insentive, so you might have some problems using it indoors. When I try to activitate in my room, it shows my house being a hundred metres away. It is better outdoors. I downloaded the maps for free on google and they work very nicely. You can plot the distance from one place to another, change map colour from back background to black background, ask the system to plot a route either by fastest route or shortest route, whether you want to travel by foot, road, ferry, tunnels, highways, etc. Like most GPS systems, it tells you where to turn. E.g. 100 metres turn left. But you would have to purchase navigation guides for this. I would have like the GPS on this phone to be more sensitve and accurate though.

Sound:
The loudspeaker plays amazing good quality music. Loud too. You can listen to radios on the phone (with an internet connection), Sounds much better then my horrible car speaker, so I am using this as a music player in my car when I drive instead. saving music files and pod casts straight from itunes. Like a small ipod (depending on the size of your SDcard) Have an hour plus of songs on it now. I got a free 1GB card as part of the purchase with the shop. Comes with 160MB internal storage memory but the microSD card can take up to 2GB if you purchase one. Music can be optimised by selecting jazz, rock, and other modes to optimised the sound quality. You can even choose to have a "surround sound type" effect if you choose to.

Battery life:
Claimed to allow 160-240 mins of talk time and up to 215 hours of standby. I used it extensively the last 2 days, so realistically I can say that this will last about 1 full day on heavy use. 2 days with light use. The stated time provided by Nokia is a bit unrealistic.

Look: Big screen that slides up to reveil a numver pad below, or slide downwards to reveal a "multimedia playback control planel" at the top. The screen can be switched from a "protrait" view to a sideways "landscape" view when taking photos or surfing webpages that are wide. The camera can be taken either "handphone styled" or sideways as in a "traditional camera style". Blue backlight. The matt silver/dark plum cover looks much better then the matt silver/sand cover phone in my opinion. 2.6" QVGA (320x240) screen. The screen has has exceptional quality, vivid colour and brightness. There is a camera at the back which has a manual switch that opens and closes the camera lens. on the front is a smaller camera lens that allow you to take pictures and videos of yourself.

Verdict: I am very impressed with this photo and I am a very happy customer. Well worthed it. Consider the cost of getting a separate GPS system, 5 megapixle camera, MP3/MP4 device, and a smart phone with ultra fast internet, all in one. For the bargain of AUD$576 (~S$600-700) I got it for, I think it is very worth it.

Can the iphone match this for the same price? It'll be interesting to see. Let us not forget that by the time iphone comes to Singapore, the N95's price would have dropped significantly.

Wow~!!! what an in-depth review of the Nokia N95. Glad you are having fun with it. I think functionality wise, N95 no doubt wins hands down. Its like a truckload of weapons man. As its advertisement goes "theres a thing in my pocket, its not one thing, its many". However, you may find that it comes in handy because you are in Australia. How many of us actually need a GPS in tiny singapore. Its more like a perk than a necessity. And many a times, no matter how many functions a phone has, the usage of an average user will come down to just texting, calling and taking pictures.

Anyway, Broderick, is your info reliable? hahaha~!

joeltay81 - June 12, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
I just heard from a friend that the iphone, not only have a 2 megapix camera, but the format is such that photo sharing might be a problem. Wrong format or something like that. Something like how ipod music cannot usually be transferred from one ipod to another computer. That is what I heard. Do not know the details. My friend was reading from some china online news network and was telling me what it was saying as I cannot read much chinese.
