Magicdow - December 7, 2004 05:00 AM (GMT)
Well, he's not the cheapest. I've heard someone offering $39.95. Just like shopping.
Maybe these people should offer cards like CoffeBean, every performance gets one stamp, collect 10 and you get a free show.

Ning - December 7, 2004 07:07 AM (GMT)
Nah... Why would professionals do this? It'd be senseless to do so and hurt the market which already isn't doing very well.
Seriously... this Jeff guy seems like some kiddo out to make a quick buck... Augh!!! *insert disgusted smilie icon*
hong - December 7, 2004 07:35 AM (GMT)

Honestly, is SM at kovan considered spoiling the art of magic too?? i remembered when i was a noob magician, that they told me everything i saw on TV could be learnt from them. and that everything involved a slide of hands, misdirection and nothing much. I personally think it gives to much info about magic.. and gives people the preparation that magic is nothing special.. it's all a slide or misdirection.. If this is spoiling the market.. Is there anything SMC can do about it?
3 Cheers for sacracy in magic in singapore!
thanks :)
Winder - December 9, 2004 02:36 AM (GMT)
Truthfully, i don't know ~ Hahaha ~ SM is under MagicCastle, i believe they got their own reasons to do so.
Out of Millons in Singapore, only 1000 are members (Not exact figures just estimating). Some take this as a hobby, some take this as a semi hobby/semi pro, some take this as an Art to woo girls and so on and etc. The list could get longer, but i would want to perform infront of 1000 Magicians who know what i will be doing, really kills the entertainment process.
Anyway if we want to meet this guy up, just a small meeting with nothing going on. Maybe we will, cause we doesn't really have this guy background, who knows he might be a real pro. An IBM magician who teaches and does party for a living, just doing some advertising on yahoo.
If you are a Pro, you will be doing your job advertising on the Internet cause most of the people in SG uses the net for business and searches.
Let Mac handle this, if we wanna meet him up. It's a Win Win Situation anyway :)
But truthfully $50 is a little -_- Little ?, maybe we can meet up with him and see whats his routine or etc.
illusionist - December 9, 2004 03:53 AM (GMT)
Huh Y Me ???? You think I am so good in handling this type of suitation meh.. ;) About Street Magic.. hmm.. I think at first they are trying to bring in customer then they say this lol.. they are not really spoiling the market lah. Since they have been in the market for long hmm they have a certain standard to teach the art of magic..lol.. For us we still have many things to learn and discover about magic.. Magic don't really stop at a certain point.. It like everyday we will think of a new way to present a trick and how to use certain things to created some new one lol...
Like that guy.. hmm I am not very sure how to confront this guy hahahah maybe edwin will have a better idea.... this kind of things is forever.. some people learn a little trick and just wan to get out there and earn some cash with some of his trick lol.. If they teach is properly hmm.. I have nothing to say.. Let see wat we can do hor edwin lol :P

Ok.
Please dun go and beat up/threaten/blackmail/intimidate/manhandle/verbal abuse/kidnap/molest...(etc etc) anyone in SMC's name ok?
It will not be most effective if we are identified by CID's anti-organised crime division as a new secret society. B)
Mystical2004 - December 9, 2004 06:47 AM (GMT)
haha... ST headlines "New secret society in singapore goes by name of SMC. These group of people meet together regularly @ youth park to exchange tips on smuggling drugs in the guise of doing magic tricks."????????
this reminds me of a show on central yesterday. the police catch a performer who is suspected of smuggling drugs. she then proceeds to ask him to empty his pockets, where he produces cards, silks, cups, balls, coins and a deck from his mouth. when the drug is found, she proceeds to handcuff him, where he escapes, then it finishes with him stealing her watch...

An email from Jeffery Wong B)
Who says singaporeans are not enterprising? :D But he better dun turn up to be 22 or something like that and say that 19 yr in magic, he started learning at 3. <_<
Shall we invite him to the outing tmrw and maybe he really CAN teach us a thing or two? Else it will worth a good laugh anyways....
His mail:
Nice to hear from you again and thanks for your interest in the magic course.
It's true that I've provided you with the "vague" description and apologise for that. Normally, I'll tell my new students before the course starts by performing for the student, so that they expect what he/she will get and see before confirming the exceptance of the start of the course. Therefore, no string is attached.
It has been about 19 years now since I started learning at a young age. And it's still keeping me going.
I don't have any "certificate" but have been performing for company D&D, children's birthday, special functions, etc. Currently I've about 10 magic students of different stages now in which I've started teaching just last year.
Aloysius, here's the course menu :
Basic (Close up magic)
1.Rope trio Free
2.Rope cut & restore Free
3.Eye of the tiger Free
4.Gimmick cards trick Free
5.Ace assembly card deck trick *
6.Card-toon deck trick ^
7.Reverse card deck trick
8.Do as I do *
9.Part money trick Self-provide
10.Rubber band trick Self provide
11.Number mind reading Free
12.Floating match #
13.Paper tear & restore
Free
14.100 names Free
15.Simple cups & balls routine Free
* You can purchase a Bicycle deck from me if you want at a discount, lower than the market rate in Singapore. Once you have this deck, most of the card deck routine will be using from this deck and now additional deck is required for your further stages.
^ You can purchase this addtional deck as I will be teaching you how to make them or you can provide yourself.
#This special gimmick trick need to be purchase if you want. Else a replacement of another trick.
As for the Intermediate course menu, I will normally address nearer to the end of the basic courses. Same thing that I will do is to show what my student will expect by performing to them for the next stages. Basically you will learn how to control your card deck, 5 skills for cards, coins routine, combine cards with rubberband trick, advance cups & balls, sponge balls, card reverse. So, no string is attached before you see what you get. Rest assured.
For Advance, you will learn how to perform card tricks on stage, prediction, appearing cane trick etc. At this stage, you will learn how to create new tricks by yourself or even you teach me!!
Aloysius, my basic idea for teaching magic courses are as follows:
1. To undestand how magic works and to avoid being con by strangers for money.
2. To appreciate the art of magic and to promote magic as an art.
3. Thru' magic, you will gain self-confidence in yourself, and to make wider circle of friends for yourself.
Hope I've provided as much info. for you but of course I understand that you want to know more about the Intermediate and the Advance stage. It shows your keen interest in Magic! That will be only for the mean time. Hope you don't mind.
If you require me for a free demo, feel very free to contact me. No obligation.
illusionist - December 10, 2004 04:17 AM (GMT)
hahaha maybe if he accpet the offer lol.. lets see how good he is lol maybe is is really good and we can really learn something from him.. :D thru his basic trick list it look like all peguine instant download trick lol.. :P

1. you are getting con by him if you take his class.
2. How does one appreciate and promote magic by charging low fees?
If he is really 19 yrs into magic, then he should know what the market rate is. This is sad.
hong - December 10, 2004 08:13 AM (GMT)
19 yrs in this line??? looks like 19 mths to me <_< ... only dummies attend his course!!!
Mystical2004 - December 10, 2004 11:28 AM (GMT)
well... it may all end up to be advertising hype... but lets see wat this guy can actually do...IMO, if his pattering is solid but sleights are a bit bad... i dont see the point of learning from him as nobody can patter exactly like each other... each person has his own unique style.

Its worth to degrade him because he already degrades himself by charging $50 per show.
Those who are doing this.... SHAME ON YOU!
magi81 - December 17, 2004 03:09 AM (GMT)
Ermz...
am i the only guy who might feel abit injustice for this poor guy?
1) We hvt seen his "skills" yet, and if he is really good, perheps even better than anyone visiting SMC, i believe we have no rights to critisise about him on his "skills"
2) Charge cheaply, simply said, charging cheaply is not an offence.. You would probably know the meaning of freelance, if he's charging 500 dollars, no one would find him... by charging 50 dollars, he's being clever, cuz he know if he puts 500, only people who are loaded would find him...
btw, even as with vids, you can learn many tricks from dvds, lesser than 50 dollars in some case, wouldn't that be more cheap skate?
conclusion: wait and see how good he is, if he's good and he decides to charge so low, it's his problem, not ours, it's his loss again, no ours :)

Hey dearie... I understand your point of view BUT I really have to disagree with you on one thing. What this person is doing IS affecting us... simply because what he's doing simply upsets the market... yes, he's SPOILING THE MARKET.
This especially affects performers (not just magic hobbyists) who make this their rice-bowl or use it to get some serious income. And the local market here is already very very small... how can the other performers (targeting smaller scaled gigs, similiar to this guy) survive when the market by itself isn't that strong to begin with?
Also, if he's good, he shouldn't charge such low fees. Good prices/ attractive deals and dramatically/ insanely low fees are very very different. Anyways, is anyone here really going to approach him and "check out if he's good"?
I don't think so.

We are not talking if he is skillful or not, we're saying that he is cheap. Would your peers respect you if you were to do this kind of thing?

If he charges $500 and manage to sell it, he is clever. If he charges $50, that's degrading, desperate and maybe despicable (how's that for 3Ds :) )
No matter how good he is, he is still cheap. If he is not good, than he shouldn't be performing but practising.
Remember, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.
Aloy - December 17, 2004 03:53 AM (GMT)
I HAVE actually met this guy to check him out.
Apparently the $50 is for private home parties which he is doing "just for his own enjoyment", to satisfy his performance itch because he has no other avenue to perform, and he charges standard rates for coporate events....
....apparently, well, have to meet him again to talk to him more to really see.
I met up with him as a "potiential student" but it was a short meeting and I didn't really have a good chance to talk to him much. Planning to meet him again sometime.
Let you guys know as i go...
ReDeFiNe - December 17, 2004 03:56 AM (GMT)
Hey ...wow it is a long thread ..haha..i give my few cents on this matter on cheaper performers..
Honestly i have yet to meet anyone personally but heard alot bout these guys..i seriously encourage them to charge higher..firstly..magic art has a certain price..they should charge more for their benefits..hahaz...
Yup its true that it does damages the performers..as there are cheaper alternatives for the clients..but yet most clients actually would work with people they are more familar with and safer to work with..as in confim every show is good and arrive on time..rather than pay less and worry throughout the magician's performances..the clients have to play safe too...
Personally when someone ask me to lower my price saying someone else is charging lower..i will tell them nicely that they can go ahead and maybe when they have the budget, they can engage me in future..Or i will refer them to a fellow peer that is charging at a lower rate..in this case i build a relationship with them and in future i might still get a gig from them..rather than lower my price and next time when i want to up my price its so much harder...
I know that the most competitive market in Singapore for magic is the children's parties market..wow..its so competitive that i feel everyone is charging less and giving more....hahahz....
The corporate market and event stage shows market are still ok..anw,if you build good relationship with your agency..they will give u the show..
Thats my take..in conclusion, guys who wants to perform professional shows..dun worry there is a piece of the cake for everybody..after all a magician can only be at one place at one time...hahahz
Take care,
Jeremy Pei
Ning - December 17, 2004 04:05 AM (GMT)

Morphine!!! Kudos to you... I really appluade you for making the serious step to check things out and not just only talk about it. Santa's going to give you something for Christmas

hey.. the guy in question lives just a few blocks away from me.. haha.. i don't know who he is ar.. never seen him before.. but then.. i think i noe who he is.. coz. everytime when there is a CC function under my block.. my siser will tell me abt this magician who is always commisioned my the CC to perform.. most of the kids stuff always got him.. i have not seen him perform before though... da guy is an uncle ar.. it might be him ar..
and.. maybe 50 dollars is for a damn cheap show.. maybe balloon twisting.. or some kids clown magic or something ar.. maybe he's juz listing his cheapest shows to entice ppl.. maybe that is his strategy... dunno la.. juz my 2cts...
GordonLi - January 23, 2005 04:20 AM (GMT)
his strategy is to cheapen magic and himself. pathethic attempt to get bookings.
but then again, wif more n more "magicians" entering the industry, there will be more competitive prices, although i hope we can try to maintain market prices.
